Just wondering what people think is the best movie ever made, and of all the best picture Oscars, what one is the all time best picture. My personal favorite movie is Almost Famous.

I would have to say that it's toss up between Braveheart, Spartacus, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan. I'm a sucker for epics

Hmm my personal favourite movie at the moment is probably Platoon. Great movie, powerful, moving, has something to teach. Not a very happy 2 hours though.

No one has mentioned:
The Godfather series which is considered #1 by some rating service, internet movie database or something.
My personal favorite, The Usual Suspects.
Anyone seen Once Upon a Time in the West? Awsome movie.
And yeah, someone mentioned Shawshank Redemption.
Umm no offense to whoever posted em, but I dont know if any Nick Cage movie should be considered "great" hehe.

The Rock is a good Nick Cage movie or is that more because of Sean Connery

Sorry, but mine are a mix of the cliché and the groundbreaking:
-Citizan Kane
-Third Man
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
-Brazil
-Pulp Fiction
-2001: A Space Odyssey
Formula films annoy me beyond belief. But even then, that annoyance pales into insignificance by those movies that pretend to be based on true major historical events, but are so wildly inaccurate that they should have just admitted they are only in it for the money and the accolades. I'm not going to name particular films, but Braveheart and Titanic knows who I’m talking about!

I'm not sure it's even possible to pick "the greatest movie of all time". There's just too many factors to take into account.
You could pic one based on epic grandiosity, or spectacle, or story, or the connection it makes with an audience, or the truth it may speak about the human condition, or some combination of some or all. Or none. And everyone would disagree.
I can only give you a few favorites:
Requiem for a Dream - watching this is like getting hit by a truck. i wanna say more, but i think it would be better if you just watched it
Princess Bride - every line in this movie is quotable. :) pure fun
Trainspotting - dunno, just cuz
Quills - a fictional account of the Marqui de Sade's time in a sanatorium
Empire Records - breakfast club for the 90's
The Breakfast Club - best teen movie ever, period
Amadeus - salieri is such a great character. so full of questions, beliefs, prejudices, dreams. i think everybody feels like salieri sometimes.
Seven Samurai - another just cuz
Van Wilder - :D
Macross Plus - a story about three friends who have a violent falling out, then come together seven years later and are forced to confront what happened. but it's anime, so it's set against a backround of giant robots and an ai-controlled pop singer. first anime i watched, still the best

I'm with the few who mentioned "Shawshank Redemption", and "A Beautiful Mind".
I'd like to add to the fray:
American Beauty
The Usual Suspects
LA Confidential
The Untouchables
The Right Stuff
Strictly Ballroom
Jerry Maguire
The Sting
Alien
Blade Runner
Trading Places
Highlander
ALL-TIME WORST FILMS:
Darkman (and it's spawn of crap sequels)
Battlefield Earth
ANY sequel to Highlander
The majority of pretentious Robert Altman films.

A couple of people have mentioned that. Funny, I used to belong to a different Internet community (a sort of free help site) where the guy who wrote that was a contributor. I've never seen it but have only heard good things about it.
A couple others:
Ocean's Eleven- (the remake) I just found it really entertaining.
Life is Beautiful- Didn't think a comedy about the holocaust was possible.
Presumed Innocent- Great book, great movie.
Rob Roy- Braveheart seems to grab all the attention. This one was a classic, too.
I'm trying to think of a great sci-fi movie. One that I thought was great was Gattaca. Anyone else see that?

The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo (Kurosawa, classic epics)
Rear Window, Vertigo (Hitchcock)
Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick)
The Seventh Seal (has the classic scene of the knight playing chess with death)

Cool film that does the book justice, but not what I'd call the 'best movie of all time'. Reading back through the posts i think we are starting to drift into 'films I quite like' territory.

aah, so many good ones.
I would put Gandhi on top hands down.
What else ranks high up there?
Comedy: Monty Python and the Holy Grail is probably #1
Lord of the Rings is probably the best fantasy sort of movie. It's only real competition is Star Wars, so it's not surpising. Notwithstanding, LoTR is a very good series.
Kurosawa made some excellent films. I saw Yojimbo and liked it a great deal. It's hard to really pin down a list of great movies because I think it would be very long...But yeah, Gandhi's number one in my books.
MacNut
Mar 1, 2004, 08:30 PM
The Matrix might not be the best movie ever but it did change the way movies are made much like Star Wars did back in the late 70's, so for that reason it is one of the best movies.

Hell yes.
But some of them that sound violent are actually comedies. Like Death To Smoochy (with Robin Williams so it has to be good :D) and Cannibal: The Musical (by Trey Parker & Matt Stone -> as in South Park). Stir Crazy is great, another one of the Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder films.

"The Maltese Falcon".
2nd place, "The Wizard of Oz".
You guys are all too young. The late 30s were the golden age of cinema.
Fifty years from now, what movies of the late 20th century will anyone want to see? "2001", probably so, altho they'll laugh at the special effects and the ending. I enjoyed "Glory", and the Russian "War and Peace", and "The Right Stuff", but I don't know how they'll age.

I saw lots of Kubrick out there but don't think anyone mentioned his ultimate masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange... definitely very high on my list of best films. The book by Burgess is absolute genius as well.
Here's my top 5, no particular order... at least these are the ones I'm thinking of right now, the list is always subject to change....
-Aguirre, Wrath of God (starring the notorious Klaus Kinski; he and the director of the film almost murdered each other during the filming, which took place in the South American jungle.)
-Clockwork Orange (the only flick I know of that starts out with a beating, a braul, an attempted gang rape, a high-speed car scene and a another rape, all within the first 10 minutes of the film.)
-Midnight Cowboy. Can anyone else vouch for this? I don't know too many people who've seen it... Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight at their absolute best. Also one of the saddest movies I've ever seen.
-Taxi Driver. This is a tie with Mean Streets. You can't lose with the Scorsese/DeNiro combo. Well, at least you couldn't lose back in the '70s...
-Annie Hall. Had to include one Woody Allen film because he's one of my favorite director. Love all his films but this one is the classic.
So many good films being listed out there, I'm impressed and relieved that there aren't too many mentions of The Matrix and The Rock and other mainstream bockbuster trash.... (Sorry... I'm a shameless film snob, I admit it freely.)

Absolute best movie ever made:
"2001: A Space Odessey".
Great "story" and the special effect still beat the crap out of any Lucas movie.
And then (no real order, just good films IMHO):
*Clockwork Orange
*Dr Stangelove
*Barry Lindon
*Full Metal Jacket
*Lock, Stock & 2 Smocking Barrels
*Snatch
*Trainspotting
*The Deer Hunter
*The Godfather Trilogy
*Delicatessen
*Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (aka "Amelie")
*Alien (the original, by R. Scott)
*Bladerunner
*Monty Python's The Life of Brian

To whoever said that they liked Ronin because of the chase seen, I agree. That is my favorite part about the whole movie. I also like that it has jean reno in it which is one of the reasons that i like Leon. He is also in Le Femme Nikita and Subway which are both very good films although subway is a bit odd.
i have thought of a few more worthwhile movies:
A Fish Called Wanda (Kevin Kline is great in this) "K-k-k-ken is trying to k-k-k-kill me"
Snatch is also a very good one that i forgot to mention earlier
!2 Monkeys
A River Runs Through It
Malcolm X
The Fog of War (new errol morris docmentary on McNamara, it one the oscar for best documentary i think)
I also second Amelie and Being John Malkovich.

Impossible to choose one. I would have to pick at least Casablanca, Seven Samurai, To Kill A Mockingbird, and African Queen. Citizen Kane--The best movie ever made. Decades ahead of its time, brilliantly written, directed, acted, shot, and edited. Required study for any college film program in the world.
2001: A Space Oddessy--The most accurately-depicted space/sci-fi movie ever done, also decades ahead of its time. Eerie and gorgeous. Full of delightly unanswered questions.
Apocalype Now--Wildly surreal fantasy that somehow conveys the Viet Nam vibe better than its far more "grounded" competition.
Ben Hur--Incredible film. Very moving, very rich. Great chariot scene, powerful ending.
The Empire Strikes Back--The only Star Wars movie that really stands the test of time. The special effects may be dated, but great acting and directing coupled with a fine script make this the gem of the bunch. Confident enough not to have a happy ending.
ET--Brilliant achievement. Powerfully moving.

Oh man.
"The Right Stuff" is such a masterpiece. One of THE great cinematic works.
As far as action, the brutally violent and supercharged "The Road Warrior".
"Amadeus" is pure delight. "Ran" by Kurosawa, words cannot express.
As for comedy, nothing can be funnier than "Airplane!". The movie that spawned the spoof genre.

I think Citizen Kane is pretty much the acknowledged "best movie of all time". However, personally, I have to agree that Apocalypse Now! is a classic.
I enjoyed The Rock, it was mostly clever and had Sean Connery, but come on, what was the deal with the underground roller-coaster? I thought I was watching The Goonies. And why was the furnace-thing still running? And why did Mason (Connery) have to memorize the flame sequence to escape if he was coming from the other side, and all he had to do was open the metal door? And why did he have to roll under the furnace to open the door, instead of just pointing to the door and telling the SEALs "hey, cut a hole in that, will you?"...
Enjoyable, but don't think about it too much. The best of the Die Hard genre is still the original.

I'll second The Seventh Seal. I love Ingmar Bergman (though I usually keep that a secret so that people won't think me pretentious), and it's not only probably his most approachable movie, but very well-rounded and enjoyable. Wild Strawberries, currently, is a close second.
I also really like The City of Lost Children.

Just wondering what people think is the best movie ever made, and of all the best picture Oscars, what one is the all time best picture. My personal favorite movie is Almost Famous.
2001 A Space Odyssey
Barry Lyndon
Metropolis
The Birth of a Nation
The Seventh Seal
The Virgin Suicides
The Last Temptation of Christ
One Hour Photo
These are on my list, regardless of what the Oscars say. I lost all respect for the Oscars after this go round....don't get me wrong, I love the LOTR Trilogy....but all of the sudden the LOTR is good enough to win everything that it could not the last 2 years (on the last of the films). I'm sorry, but that is just too obvious.

Wow. You guys have already mentioned most of my list.
10 Star Wars (1977) 8.7/10 (108140 votes)
I can't believe "Star Wars" wasn't mentioned until it was attached to a list from a website! I think you guys are shying away from movies that the general public supported.
I think all of the Clint Eastwood westerns where he doesn't sing rock.
Also for some reason I like "Das Boot" (in German with subtitles...) That movie rocked.

I quite understand your temptation. I indulged in a Holy Grail viewing last night after reading this thread :D . Damn is it a good movie. Many more recent comedies are at least in part inspired by the style of the Grail...
But I must admit that "The Life of Brian" is a better film. It's at least as funny but also has more depth to it.
Brian: Excuse me. Are you the Judean People's Front?
Reg: ****** off! We're the People's Front of Judea!

I agree. That is one of my favorite films, mainly for the Rome and Latin jokes. We used to watch it all the time in one of my latin classes.
"...OK, OK, besides the roads, system of government, sanitation, personal safety, language, culture, and the rule of law, what have the Romans ever done for us?"
CENTURION:What's this, then? 'Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?
BRIAN:It-- it says, 'Romans, go home'.
CENTURION:No, it doesn't. What's Latin for 'Roman'? Come on!
...
CENTURION:Conjugate the verb 'to go'.
BRIAN:Uh. 'Ire'. Uh, 'eo'. 'Is'. 'It'. 'Imus'. 'Itis'. 'Eunt'.
CENTURION:So 'eunt' is...?
BRIAN:Ah, huh, third person plural, uh, present indicative. Uh, 'they go'.
CENTURION:But 'Romans, go home' is an order, so you must use the...?
BRIAN:The... imperative!
CENTURION:Which is...?
BRIAN:Umm! Oh. Oh. Um, 'i'. 'I'!
CENTURION:How many Romans?
BRIAN:Ah! 'I'-- Plural. Plural. 'Ite'. 'Ite'.
It goes on like this for a while. (http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/python/Scripts/LifeOfBrian/brian-08.html)

I think that the Jerk has already been mentioned, but i think we should also mention L.A. Story. Steve Martin did a wonderful job both acting in and writing this movie. The scenes are just so great and indicative of L.A. in that time. I love the scene when they are on the highway having a shootout while driving, and the beginning of the movie with all of the cars going at once and everyone in the burbs coming out of their houses in sync. The scene where they are at the museum and steve martin is standing there interpreting a piece of art, and then the camera pans to the painting and it is just an abstract mess of paint without any discernable objects.
