Here's a longish clip of the massive fireworks (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/dec/31/new-year-celebrations-sydney) in Sydney Harbour a few hours ago. You have to get through a short ad, though.

Naples sex strike
over fireworks

New Year's Eve could prove to be
something of a damp squib for some
men in the Italian city of Naples.

Hundreds of Neapolitan women have pledged to go without sex unless their men promise to refrain from setting off dangerous illegal fireworks.

Local authorities are backing the women and have sent out text messages urging the men to "make love, not explosions".

The women say it is the only way to persuade their partners that they are serious about their concerns.

"Setting off illegal fireworks isn't celebrating, it's dangerous," Carolina Staiano, a founder of the campaign, told La Stampa newspaper. She told women that if their man did not understand the dangers they should "take action and make him sleep on the sofa".

''If a sex strike is what it takes in order to get the attention of our men, husbands, partners and sons, then we're ready for it," Mrs Staiano, 44, told Italy's Ansa news agency.

It seems like a simple choice for the men of Naples - if they see the New Year in with a bang they won't be seeing the New Year in with a bang...

LOL somehow I think that their wives might be on the sex strike bandwagon, but their girlfriends may not. Come on, now, this is Naples we are talking about. If the women of Italy could actually accomplish anything by playing this card, they would have played it to good effect many times by now over the past few millenia. :D

Happy New Years, everyone! I actually had a great, hypomanic, roller coaster of a year, new physical maladies and draining workload aside. I got to meet Timmy and Lee, I got to go on far too many dates, see most of the better parts of Chicago's rock scene, stand a few feet away from Ingrid Michaelson at a concert *swoon* and actually be in more than one (sequential) girlfriend relationship in a single calendar year, which bizarrely may never have happened for me before.

Don't worry, 2009 will pale 2008. :)

Squib is an actual word??

Me and my girlfriend say it to each other, it's sort of an inside joke, have we been rumbled?

It's so incredibly actual... even the BBC uses it. :)

Happy New Year to all those in central Europe. :)

The fireworks in Edinburgh looked amazing and with the Castle as a backdrop, it is kinda stunning. Particularly when they start the year with a cannon firing - Big Ben is kinda dull in comparison! :p

And here's to a happy, healthy, wealthy year to us all! :D

'08 has been a GREAT year for my family! February- Bought a house for well under the going price in the 'rich kids neighborhood'. Our UPS Store in DC became one of the top 20 UPS Stores in DC area. Top off all that with a New Lexus RX-350 driving its way home right now.

Happy New Years, just got home from my cuz house, where all the grown up were poppin Champagne into paper cups as shots, and my dad was the one passing everything out, and he just handed one to me, I looked at him like "you serious?" and he just nodded,(I'm 14, I did not expect that AT ALL, I mean, from my brother yes, my cousins, yes, not from my dad). My cousin (girl) said that I shouldn't be drinking that, and to water it down, but, it didn't effect me.

A shot of champagne? - won't do a thing. We usually get a drink at New Year's (albeit small to start with) from the moment we're able to make it to midnight.

Even a glass wouldn't have done much.

Nothing wrong with a drink at midnight.
