Spain unveils supercomputer plans

Spain has unveiled plans to build the world's second most powerful computer.

The supercomputer will be able to process 40 teraflops - 40 trillion calculations per second, equivalent to 18,000 personal computers.

The system will be at the heart of a centre to research climate change, medicine and industrial design.

The centre will be located in the wealthy north-east region of Catalonia, Spain's high-tech hub, and involves an investment of 70m euros ($87m).

I was just reading this... going to take 4 years.... that seems like a long, long time...

I can't remember the stats of Virginia's Big Mac, but would it be doable with Xserve G5's for less $$$$ but similar performance??

They've always had trouble with Spanish computers. The components "talk" to each other really fast, but mysteriously, they always go to sleep for an hour in the middle of the afternoon.

anyone know what "Virginia Tech have a better idea" is in Spanish?
Sounds like they would be better off looking into new methods for building super 'puters. How does their proposal add up compared to VT?

Having lived in Spain for 2 years, I am constantly forced correct a popular misconception people have about Spain.

They DON'T take a one hour break in the middle of the afternoon!

It is usually 2 to 3 hours. :D It varies a little depending on where you live and where you work... ;)

and as an american in spain, the siesta is the most annoying thing! in the states, businesses would go under doing that. just because it is the afternoon, does not mean we need a nap. some of us just woke up!

[The VT super computer was a great accomplishment. But it is not the end all of super computer design. Depending on the type of calculations being this typ of set-up is not desirable. That is the main reaspn Japan's super computer was so much.
