Dev-Team released iPhone 3G Sim Unlock Tool:

Don't eat yellowsn0w!
Hello all,

We wish you a very happy, healthy, and hopeful 2009!

We have released the yellowsn0w 3G unlock application, and we have some information that you may find useful:

BASICS

- The unlock about to be released works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

- The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).

- You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.

- yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

DETAILS

- There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.

- For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.

- After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM

- The application is version 0.9. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.

- The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.

- Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.

- Happy 2009 and enjoy!

The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can :)

What, for the 3G iPhone? Because it's already been done with the first-gen. Couldn't you search? It's coming out on New Year's. It's on their website, for crying out loud.

Yes, for 3G, I know there is one, but not for the newest baseband.

This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.

Maybe I didn't ask it to clear enough:

Firmware 2.2 is:

1. The 2.2 as it is, all the soft update etc.
2. The baseband, which handles the communication with you network provider

They managed to unlock baseband 2.11.07 (or earlier). They warn people about "normal upgrading" the firmware and I was aware of that. But my question was:

Are there any rumors about working with unclock for 2.11.07 or above ?

if you had read any of the comments on their blog it is stated multiple times that they will start looking for exploits/holes in the 2.2 baseband in the near future. and once they find a hole they can inject their code and it will be as unlockable as the rest of the basebands.

And if you had read anything from Google, you'd know that you can update to 2.2 without updating the baseband using PwnageTool and it will be unlockable on 2.2.

Remember they are unlocking the 3G through software. 2G and the 1G were already unlocked but the 3G wasn't.
Yellowsn0w will unlock the 3G version.

I know, I was aware of that, I don't need to unlock right now, it might be useful for me in the future. All I wanted is the newest baseband update :).

I admit, missed the part on their blog, where they are saying about working on new hole in the NEWEST baseband. Will wait and see, how it goes.

I'm hoping someone posts a new thread at least once per hour asking when it will be released.

This app will get released when it's ready. Do you want them to release a buggy installer for an app that can brick your phone? Plus, if you want the latest information about this, go to their blog. Why would you think someone here has some super secret, insider information?

^ yellowsn0w is the dev team's soft unlock for the iPhone 3G, it is being released today on NYE, though there is some contention as to when it will actually be made available hence the amount of chatter on the subject.

On a side note I just opened Cydia and it stated that there was an essential upgrade, I wonder if it has anything to do with the yellowsn0w release?

Just checked and can't see a package for yellowsn0w yet.

As you say it'll be ready when it's ready, being in the UK I was hoping to get it some time today but am expecting it some time tomorrow, I just couldn't help getting excited when I saw the Cydia upgrade...nevermind.

Update 1: The scamming douchebag is at it again. We DO NOT have a twitter account called ‘yellownsn0w’, and similarly no .net domain name related to yellowsn0w, don’t add this to your bookmarks. We would like you guys (currently 29 of you) to stop following him on twitter, and to also block him if he is following you. We need to see that 29 number decrease! do it people! http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/31/reminder-iphone-3g-unlock-coming-tonight/

We’re now just hours away from the New Year, which means we’re also hours away from yellowsn0w courtesy of the Dev-Team. Yellowsn0w, for those with short memories, is the Dev-Team’s solution for soft-unlocking the iPhone 3G. After MuscleNerd’s successful demo last week, iPhone 3G owners have been anxiously awaiting 2009 as with it comes the public release of the Dev-Team’s work. A curious post has just gone up on the Dev-Team blog however, which has sparked tons of speculation:

2008?
01110110
01110100
01100001
01100010
01100101
01110010
00100000
00110110
00110001
00110000
00110110
00110000
00110001
00110111
00110100
00100000

There have been tons of guesses made as to the post’s meaning and since we’re not coders, we’ll leave it to all you hackers out there to figure this one out. If you think you can shed some light, definitely drop us a comment here and let use know. To this point, the most convincing explanation comes from “teamare” in the post’s comments section:

Converted to Ascii the message reads “vtaber 61060174″. vtaber converted to ROT13 reads, “ignore”.

It is possible that this means to ignore post 61060174 on the iPhone Dev-Team’s blog. The post entitled, “The man from DelMonte - He say Yes!” is a warning not to update to iPhone firmware 2.2 using iTunes. Perhaps the iPhone Dev-Team has figured out a way to unlock the new baseband that came with 2.2 as well.

In other words, the Dev-Team might just have one last trick up its collective sleeve and yellowsn0w may have been tweaked to unlock any currently available iPhone 3G firmware / baseband versions. Woo! So, if you can manage your way around a keyboard tomorrow morning post-New Year’s partying, there should be a nice surprise from the Dev-Team waiting to usher you into 2009 SIM-lock free.

Assuming I understood musclenerd's presentation correctly, their work consisted of 2 parts; (1) the code that does the unlock and (2) determining where to hook into the baseband. (1) was the harder of the two parts however it can be reused. My guess is this is how they came up with the unlock code for the 2.2 baseband.

A side benefit of this software unlock is it will, for all intents and purposes, put the hardware unlock solutions, with all their problems, out of business.

Just incase anyone didn't see yet, dev team posted an update that spells out in plain english that the unlock works for 2.28.00:

Update 4: (a) The yellowsn0w Cydia package will be available as soon as our devteam member in charge of the repo wakes up to fix a file permission error. (b) Once it’s out, those users with SIMs that have apps and other menus on them will need to do that extra step we’ve been talking about. They’ll need to pull and reinsert the SIM once after rebooting the phone to engage the unlock. Even though it’s needed only once per boot, it’s still a nuisance and we’ll be fixing that ASAP. (c) You’ll know if you fall into that “extra step” category if your carrier doesn’t show up within about 10 seconds of the slide to unlock screen. (d) Yes it really is for baseband 02.28.00. That means everyone can use it now! (e) Happy New Year!

Sorry if I'm late with the thread!!! Earlier yesterday, the Dev-team had given hints to ignore an earlier post of theirs (which was to not update to 2.2 because there'd be no unlock for it soon), well they found out how to do it :D

Update 3: Now to explain the above screenshot. The soft unlock has undergone many changes in the last two days. The most significant one: the soft unlock will now be only for baseband 02.28.00 (the most recent baseband). Yes we’ve been advising everyone to avoid updating their basebands, and in general that will always be the best policy. Not every baseband version is guaranteed to have a hole through which we can inject the unlock.

Update 4: (a) The yellowsn0w Cydia package will be available as soon as our devteam member in charge of the repo wakes up to fix a file permission error. (b) Once it’s out, those users with SIMs that have apps and other menus on them will need to do that extra step we’ve been talking about. New info by Dev Team (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/):

Don't eat yellowsn0w!

Hello all,

We wish you a very happy, healthy, and hopeful 2009!

We’re about to release the yellowsn0w 3G unlock application, and we have some information that you may find useful:

BASICS

The unlock about to be released works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00.

The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).

You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.

yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

DETAILS

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.

For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.

After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM

The application is version 0.9. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.

The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.

Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.

Happy 2009 and enjoy!

The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can :)

it's working beautifully for me after a bit of playing around.

by that i mean some restarts etc, but i think what really made the difference in the end is that i had a SIM PIN on my Vodafone Germany SIM so i took that off and it started working. :)

That's a UK iPhone 3G (o2) running on Vodafone Germany now on 2.2 with the latest base band.

Have you tried ejecting and putting the SIM back in? I got a "invalid sim" first, then after 2-3 mins vodafone showed up. and now if i switch between sims it doesnt take more than 5 secs to accept the SIMs. :)

My personal advice: Please wait for the final version of yellowsn0w and then at least two weeks with the 3G software unlock. It's an early beta version out now. The dev-team announced beta version 0.9.1 (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/67797811/dont-eat-yellowsn0w) some minutes ago:

UPDATES

Soon you’ll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!)

If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line <string>-q</string> right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)

No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.

The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

T-mo's 3G will NOT work with the iPhone 3G because T-Mo chose frequencies entirely different. They don't overlap at all.

This information is available at the dev team website. BTW, the previous post didn't answer the question you asked. The iPhone 3g is the model name of the current iPhone. The iPhone 3G works on the Edge and 3G networks. Tmobile also works on the 3G and Edge networks, but uses a different frequency on the 3G network. An unlocked iPhone 3G will work on the Tmobile Edge network, but what's the point of doing that?

This will officially void the warranty right?
This unlock solution requires jailbreaking.

I did! It was able to call and receive calls by just putting in the SIM (and waiting about 15 minutes) and after I put in VPN settings I was able to use Safari, all on EDGE. (Disabling 3G is required, but if you turn it on the phone will search for another 15 minutes or so and it'll get EDGE). I was using a Sidekick SIM.

then take the sim out (give it 1 min)

after that go to airplane mode and turn it on for 10 sec
then turn it off.. it should work..
if still doesn't work then just take the sim out and put it back in

It turns out that the unlock will ONLY work with 2.28.0, and if you are still running 2.11.7, you need to upgrade. Sucks for all those people who didn't upgrade and sacrificed the stability and features of 2.2 for so long.

This is very frustrating. None of my sim cards work on my Movistar Spain iPhone.

I've tried Spanish sim cards (Simyo, Yoigo, Jazztel, Vodafone) and Israel Orange and none work. :(

A lot of people mention putting the phone into airplane mode but no matter how I do it, every time I turn the plane mode off, I get a "invalid sim" error.

What's worse.. it seems that Yellowsn0w CANNOT be uninstalled.
I mean, it's supposed to be a daemon and a modification to the baseband code. You can uninstall the daemon but the modification seems to be permanente, because I just restored 2.2 and I don't get an "invalid sim" error when I put any other sims.

With unmodified iphone you get a sim error as soon as you put in another operator sim cards.

I don't like this..

EDIT: I'm overseas and put my AT&T contract on hold, that may have something to do with it...
EDIT 2: Woohoo, it just worked! I turned off, then on, let it sit until "No Service", took out the SIM, let it sit for 2 minutes, put it back in, waited 1 minute and it said "Activated!" 3G switch was off.

Download the MobileTerminal package via Cydia (http://apt.saurik.com), after installation open up the app and key in the commands as per jamestemroot's reply. I tried this myself but I can't say I had too much luck with it

How do you reboot via boss pref?? is this a special software??

Download the BossPrefs package Via Cydia (http://apt.bigboss.us.com/repofiles/cydia/), after installation open up the app and press the power button at the bottom of the screen, it will then give you the option to reboot. I've just discovered SBSettings which is basically the new BossPrefs or as the BigBoss site says...the future of BossPrefs.

For those having problems this is the only way I was able to get it to work on AT&T without dropping in and out signal over and over.

1. Install BossPrefs and Yellowsn0w from Cydia

2. Disable everything in BossPrefs

3. Reboot your iPhone using BossPrefs

4. Wait 1.30 min when you see lockscreen

5. Take your sim out and insert it

6. Wait a moment

7. In settings turn on Fly Mode

8. Turn off Fly Mode

9. Your iPhone 3G should be working now!

OK, I have spent the last 2 days working solid trying to get this to work on the UK Three (3) carrier on a iPhone that was locked to o2. Follow these steps, each one is pretty important:

1. Restore your iPhone with itunes to 2.2 firmware (if you haven’t already)

2. Jailbreak with QuickPwn (if you haven’t already)

3. Open installer and add the source Dev Team provided and download yellowsn0w 0.9.4 (if you haven’t already)

4. Download BigBoss Prefs (if you haven’t already)

5. Download Mobile Terminal (if you haven’t already)

6. Go into Settings -> Phone -> show My Caller ID Turn this ON
** Although it maybe greyed out and say OFF, you can still turn it ON**

7. Go into BigBoss Prefs and click Reboot

8. Once phone is on, go into Terminal

9. OK, now the timing of this next part in important.
There are 4 lines that need to be entered. You need to type;
- yellowsn0w –r
- yellowsn0w –c
- These two commands need to be entered between 2-4 seconds within each other. They way you do that is type in one of the commands (yellowsn0w –r) on the terminal screen (but don’t press enter) then if you click the top right corner (hit the battery symbol) another terminal will appear, type the second command (yellowsn0w –c) but don’t press enter. Now, hit the battery twice more and you’ll be back at the first terminal screen. Press enter, quickly press move to the second screen and press enter again. As long as “open: Resource Busy” does not appear, move to the next step, otherwise repeat the above, make sure you quick enough entering the commands.

10. Next do the same as the above but enter these two commands:
- yellowsn0w –r
- yellowsn0w –l
- Again, make sure they are entered within 2-4 seconds of each other. And AGAIN, you will know if this worked by waiting 20 seconds after you’ve entered “yellowsn0w –l” and “open: Resource Busy” does not appear. (You should also see “Searching...” where your signal should be..,”

11. OK, nearly done, press home button to get out of terminal, go into Settings and turn on Aeroplane mode...turn it off...it’ll probably say “Searching...” again, if after another 20 seconds it’s still saying it, turn it on and off again and NOW it should find your network. **You’ll know if it’s working after this step as the “Carrier” bar will appear under WiFi.

NOTES – I’ve done this 3 times now to my own phone, seems to require it after each reboot. And don’t worry, it never worked the first time I tried it on each of the 3 occasions. I had WiFi on, Edge on, doesn’t seem to matter, it all seems to be about the terminal commands and having your Caller ID Showing...

OK, so i bought a pay as you go iphone from O2 yesterday. Got it home, followed the instructions and bada-bing bada-boom my Orange contracted sim worked, no problems. I've been using it today and also had no problems, they really have done a great job with this. BUT, i was trying something earlier because my friend was sending me a large text message and it didn't seem to receive them. I turned the phone off, then on again and since then have not been able to get any signal from Orange. I have uninstalled Yelowsn0w through Cydia and re-installed it (upgrading to 0.9.5 in the meantime) but still don't seem to be having any luck with it finding the Orange network. Your looking at old instructions. Just restore you iphone in the latest version of iTunes, upgrade everything normally and then use winpwn to jailbreak. You need to be on 2.2's modem firmware to use Yellowsn0w. Once jailbroken add Yellowsn0w's source in Cydia or Installer and download / install. Don't use pwnage and deal with all that. Just adds to many problems for so many. Again, the old news of don't upgrade to 2.2 via iTunes is exactly that, old and not the correct procedure. Upgrade to 2.2 NORMALLY and jailbreak with either quickpwn or winpwn.

Putting it in the downloads section WOULD make it more complicated, because transferring it to the phone via ssh is something that a lot of people wouldn't want to bother with trying. They offer yellowsn0w through a simple download in cydia/installer that makes it simple for everyone. :)
