Just got a Wacom Bamboo

I plugged it in and it immediately started working (got to love the Mac OS). I opened the System Prefs and noticed something called "Ink" had appeared, but nothing for the pen itself. Should I even bother installing the Pen tablet driver that came with it or is it unnecessary?

ink iirc is the os-x name for the handwriting recognition software.

i've never had a Bamboo.. but I just retired my Graphire 4 for a Cintiq 12wx...

I'd say install the drivers - download the newest ones from wacom's website.
there are configurable things about the tablet you won't be able to use otherwise.

Ink is also available for the Intuos3 which I have. I tried Ink and didn't think it was very useful unless you type very slow and don't mind copying and pasting. You can't (or I haven't found out how to) write in Ink and have it put it into a text field in Safari, Pages, etc. :(

congrats! i just got a bamboo too. i'd recommend downloading the newest version of the mac OS X driver (5.1.0-3) off the Wacom site. 5.08-2 shipped with my tablet. i haven't had too much time to play with it yet but i'm really excited to finally have a tablet. :)

I like it. I've never used a pen/tablet before, so I wanted to get a low-end one to see if I would use it. Unfortunately, I've been doing web design almost exclusively at work since I got it, so I haven't had a lot of use for it, yet. When I did play with it, however, I really felt like I could get used to it pretty quickly.

Yes, you can. Click in the relevant field. Write on the Ink notepad. Click "Send" at the bottom of the notepad and the text is inserted into the selected field.

I LOVE my Intuos 6 x 11 and my 6 x 8 that is not longer mine.

They have a learning curve but once you get use to a tablet theyre amazing for any graphical work.

I teach a class on how to get the most out of Wacom tablets.
An you need to install the software that comes with the tablet is it let's customize hwo the tablet work for you. There will be a icon of the tablet controls installed in the "other" section of System Preferences.
This allows you to get contorl of how your tablet works.

Ink is Apples software that lets you write with the pen. An it becomes active when you plug your tablet into your mac.

hi there folks, I also am considering buying a bamboo tablet (not the bamboo fun) I like the look of the bamboo better... I understand that the Graphire tablets had a plastic sheet that you could put over your photos to trace them, is this possible with the new bamboo tablets? If not, how do you suggest I go about making my own mod i.e using a plastic sheet (what kind that would still be able to track the pen movements)? I've been told that the pen would scratch the photo by drawing directly on to it.

This is pretty much my deciding factor as to getting a tablet, I would buy a graphire as a solution to my problem, although I have been looking on ebay for the past week, and can honestly say that they don't sell that cheap, and the bamboo is more in my price range at the moment.
