I have a new MacBook and I am wondering if I plug an external monitor into the MacBook, will I now have multiple monitors, or will only the external monitor be active?

Multiple monitors. Or you can plug in a keyboard and mouse and power and shut the lid to direct all the VRAM to the external display.
