i'm sure that i've seen this around, but never answered, so i'm posting this, don't flame.

i've put this off for quite a while, but basically, the superdrive doesn't even read it. it tries to read it, but fails, and spits it back out.

that's my guess at least.

in case anyone is wondering, dvd's, and dual layer dvd's read fine, and i can read albums fine too.

All CDs? Blank CDs?

Have you tried different brands?

Might be the drive failing, do you have Applecare?

Can you do a hardware test?

Boot from OS X Install Disc 1 and choose hardware test from the menu ...

hardware test resulted fine.

i also used system profiler to see if anything didn't wrong.

I had this problem with my Late '06 15" Macbook Pro, and I fixed it by getting one of those DVD ROM drive cleaning kits, where there is a tiny brush on the dvd. Here is what I am talking about:

Of course, you use them at your own risk (http://searchenterprisedesktop.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid192_gci1204202,00.html#).
