No iPhone Nano either but we saw that one coming :p.
10:34AM Well that's it folks -- no Steve, no iPhone nano, no new Mini, no new iMac, no shockers, no surprises. We're off to the floor... but hey, Tony Bennett is incredibly smooth. And that's something, right?
Bit of a let down though, they haven't got rid of the final White MacBook from the Apple lineup either, well theirs always CES I suppose.
Well who else is infuriatingly disappointed?

Apple won't be getting rid of the Mini anytime soon, it brings in quite a bit of money, not as much as the rest of the line but hey, money. Plus its a great option for Apple users who don't have enough money to spend on an iMac or Mac Pro.

This is so depressing. I returned a mac mini I got as a christmas present because I was so sure they'd be updated because they are SO old and outdated. They need to at least be TOUCHED in the next month, if not a full overhaul with dedicated GPU. I don't care if it's $700, I have my own monitors I want to use and I need a desktop/home theater Mac soon dammit.

Apple did say they didn't want their release program ruled by events such as MacWorld, so let's hope they crack on with the next release and we see a new Mini in the next few weeks.

Maybe they'll announce the new imac/mini when they are ready to ship or close to it.
It's certainly not a lot of fun to get an announcement and then not be able to buy. The new iStuff is a good example. Gotta wait until the end of January.
Maybe (definitely) this is why Apple wants out of the tyranny of the MacWorld schedule. Then they can announce and ship rather than announce and wait. I think that's better.

Apple will use these updates for THEIR OWN event - as they are not doing MacWorld anymore...
I've been blasted for saying this - but it does make sense. If Apple announces them at someone else's event, then there's nothing for their own...

1) The mac mini makes for a good burial ground for macbook parts and processors.
2) Many people buy them as HTPCs

I have nothing against the Mini, i think its a great machine and a wonderful option for those looking to get into OSX without paying the apple premium prices. It's just amusing that people have been crying for an update for 2 years now, and get dissapointed over and over again. sorry its just my sick sense of humor.

I had my old mini sold to my neighbor-but alas, I guess I won't complete the sale, at least not now.
While the evidence for a new mini seems compelling, the lack of even a mention of it may indeed spell the end.
Perhaps the software references to it were for internal use? Prototype unit never shipped to production?

SJ is the biggest egomaniac in the Valley. Is it so hard to believe that the Messiah didn't want Schiller stealing his thunder by announcing updated iMacs and minis?
SJ is brilliant at what he does. Yeah, he's an oddball, he's eccentric and more bullish than Fester (Ballmer) in some ways, but he is a primo CEO. He's iCEO. He works on praise, his brilliance spurns from the millions of puckered lips pressed tight against his butt cheeks. If Schiller got the cheers for announcing great products because he was down with some menial hormone imbalance ("Dude, I survived pancreatic cancer, maybe you've heard of it?"), he'd be pissed, n'est pas?
I can hold off my credit card for a little while longer. ;)

So where is this going? The mini is getting updated. We know this from leaked version update in a kext file. Think about what other updates they are going to do this year.
One by one, antiglare gets sprinkled down as an option for all the MB line.
All MB's get new battery?
Snow Leopard is coming.
New iphone and as always ipods.
New mac mini eventually.
So what did they update? Things that wouldn't matter to release at a fixed date and wouldn't matter that much if leaked. Other releases they want to do when it's ready, no sooner or later. What if they tried to release Snow Leopard and it wasn't ready? Do they put it out knowing there's going to have to be a ton of fixes, or risk looking silly by announcing it and not coming out with it for a month? Not good either way.
17" MBP was the star of the show and was probably ready a while ago. How many of these do they sell anyway?
BTW, doesn't a Leopard kext mini reference imply new mini before Snow Leopard? Why design Leopard to work on a new mini if the mini is going to come with the new OS? Hmmm.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like Apple is set up nicely for a Mac "special event" sometime in the next couple months. They've said that they're moving away from Macworld because they like to control the timing of their events for when they're stuff is ready. What better way to make that point then by holding an event sometime in late January or February? Look at all the things in the product line that need to be updated:
Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro, Cinema Displays, Apple TV, Snow Leopard.
An event with all these items would be awesome.
A couple other side benefits:
1. An event further from Christmas is less likely to tick off people who bought the above items for Christmas.
2. iLife 09 isn't ready until the end of the month. How many people would be ticked off if they ordered new computers today with iLife 08 only to find out that there's a new one out in two weeks?
Because of all this, I think a late January or February event makes a lot of sense.
iStress
Jan 7, 2009, 12:00 AM
I personally feel that Apple wanted to get out of Macworld because it doesn't want to be the biggest company there, which will outshine other smaller companies.
What Apple did really indicate that they are there as a "guest speaker" at Macworld, announcing minor new products and not revolutionary ones - just like other companies participating in this year's Macworld Expo.
If Apple is going to announce something big, they are gonna do it by themselves at their own events and control it their own way, plus getting the credit.

Why would they release a set of new Mac Pro's and Mac Mini's now when Snow Leopard is just around the corner (May/June) and it would be much easier for everyone if they came with Snow Leopard preinstalled rather than having to shell out another $100 for it. I would be fairly annoyed if that happened. Just my $0.02

Jan 7, 2009, 12:20 AM
Two of the things announced today aren't going to be ready until the end of the month. That's more proof that being forced to make announcements at Macworld isn't good, as far as Apple is concerned.
A mini upgrade however, is so overdue, it's hard to figure why it couldn't be ready six months ago. Apple is milking the old model for all it's worth, that's for sure.

The Mini has a history of silent updates. I bought one of the last models before the Intel switch, and it had a 1.5Ghz CPU (instead of 1.42) and a DL-DVD burner instead of only single layer. I do agree with everybody that it should've had some small incremental update last year, or at least a price cut, but maybe Apple was spending all its money on the iPhone 3G and MacBook redesign.
As another poster said, just because it wasn't announced Tuesday doesn't mean it won't be next week. If Apple thinks it may be a couple of weeks from an announcement, why meet MW's artificial timetable? That whole push notification thing for the iPhone is about 3 months overdue, so I think they're working on a buncha stuff.

You know a few things have to be looked at in retrospect. First and foremost, we are not promised anything at these events. There was never any emails sent out to consumers saying "Get Prepared for an updated Line of iMacs and Minis". So you really gotta take it with a grain of salt and say "Maybe next time".
But don't go getting butt hurt because their agenda wasn't what you were expecting. The waiting game is just not worth it, and if anything then if you were waiting to buy an iMac or Mini then now you know. Time to buy!
And finally, everything, on one day or another WILL become obsolete. So if you are waiting to buy the latest and greatest then you are chasing your tail.

I've heard this said elsewhere by others. Problem is, the Mac mini was obsolete two years ago. The late 2006 MacBook has better specs than the current Mac mini (which basically is a portable Mac). At least the old MacBook has N wireless. It's very hard for anyone to pay good money for a computer that old, unless it's used.

The rumour sites weren't wrong per se, they weren't pulling facts out of their ass and they were pretty well founded rumours as rumours go (provided you always keep sight of the fact rumours can always be incorrect).
Apple actually threw a pretty big doosie yesterday, everything indicated that all the rumour sites (and individuals btw) predicted was almost considered a sure bet looking at the factors and stats.
Time will tell why, but not to add salt to the wound but the quad core iMac thing was a fairly late-in-the-day baseless rumour, if we see an iMac before Nehalem it will be very unlikely to be a quadcore. I've never seen a speedbump that changed the entire architecture of a system.

I doubt the mac mini release will coincide with the iMac. The iMac is a flagship product and the mini is an unrelated product architectually. It's also more of a subculture product... more or less. The mini will get an update when Apple has nearly run out of parts for the current model. While it's frustrating to see a beloved product be neglected for over a year it allows Apple to buy larger shipments of components at lower costs and helps Apple bring inventory down both of which help the margins, which helps the company value, which pleases share holders who invest in the company so they can keep building the products we all enjoy.

Is that why it's been the second best selling Mac desktop at Amazon.com over the last 5 months?

My guess is that Apple wants the new iMacs and Minis to come out with Snow Leopard.
Yes, not to mention that Snow Leopard will supposedly be optimized for Intel with minimal memory (512 Megs).
So, it wouldn't suprise me if Apple decided to wait so that the nVidia chips go down in price, and they can release a Mini with only a 120 Gig hard drive and 1 Gig RAM with Snow Leopard so they can achieve the $499 price point.
Not to mention include iLife '09.

This is my first post, but I felt like needed to contribute to this conversation.
Put me in the camp of eagerly awaiting the imac release yesterday and one who came away deeply disappointed.
I was looking for a computer that would allow me to do some basic video editing, photo editing, and run Adobe CS4. I really like the mac platform and actually already have a Macbook, but have never had a mac desktop.
I am looking to eventually get an AVCHD camera so I wanted a quad core processor so that the ingest times into FCE would be manageable, but a MacPro is just overkill for me. So I was really excited about the prospect of a quad core imac.
However, yesterday made me realize I don't want to get locked into apple. It is ludicrous to have put off a major purchase like this because apple isn't ready to release their product. In the PC world you can go and get the latest technology from any number of vendors as soon as it released.
So....what I ended up doing last night was bought all the parts required for me to put together a completely decked out quad core workstation (1TB HDD, 4GB RAM, ATI 4670, blu-ray - yes the bag of hurt, and plenty of room to grow). All of this for about half the cost of what a locked down imac would cost me.
I fully realize apple will most likely have an event either later this month or sometime during the spring announcing a quad-core imac, and yes their software is beautiful, imovie 09 alone made me think twice about the choice I made last night. But, I am more than willing to live with Windows XP for now and 7 when it comes out along with Sony Vegas (with its native no ingest time required AVCHD support) and Adobe software because I won't be at the mercy of Apple.
Yesterday was really just an arrogant slap in the face to the user community. The only hardware that is released is a $2800 laptop with a non removable battery (but wait, here's a video why its GOOD). Yes the software looked cool, but geeze did they really give a 45 minute demo of iphoto?
Maybe someday Apple will get their act together and stop trying to create a hype machine around their products and release a reasonably priced product that either has some regular update cycle, or is at least more frequently upated. Until then I'm sticking with PCs.

Welcome.
Please post in the video section your using Sony Vegas/Windows workstation. I've only tried an old version of Adobe Premier for Windows and never got it working right. Plus people ask me with a PC what is good video editing software. I have to tell them I don't know since I'm more a Mac user for that sort of thing.

I've done a lot of research on this, because I really wanted to make the right choice. From what I understand if you're going PC, Vegas Studio/Pro is the way to go and obviously on the mac it's Final Cut Express/Pro.
Adobe Premiere's AVCHD support isn't as far along and it's really expensive. The pro version of Vegas is about $500 (I'm only getting studio for now though).

Is that why it's been the second best selling Mac desktop at Amazon.com over the last 5 months?
When the desktop choices are iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro... Yes. The Apple Desktop ranking is iMac, Mac Mini, iMac, iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini. The Amazon statistics are a bit light on details as we are not given quantity sold.
I like the Mac Mini, I own a Mac Mini... and a 15" PowerBook and a MacBook. I will probably buy another Mac Mini in the future - for my livingroom, to replace my PowerBook with the busted screen. It's size and quiet operation makes it appealing for a great number of uses. Find a computer better suited for an HTPC for the price. How many people that vocally pine for an upgrade state that they will be hooking it up to their TV? I would still say that the Mac Mini has more support from the subculture (HTPC, Servers, Automotive Computers) than it has from Apple. They don't upgrade it because they don't need to. There's no competition - the sony vaio vgx-tp25e is $1900 and the via mini-itx is far less powerful (but still very cool.)
Edit: It appears that you may be able to get the vaio for $1280 refurbished at sonystyle.com, otherwise ~$1600... but still.

Take a look at http://www.apple.com/nz/ right now. One of the scrolling headlines is "Meet the new iMac".
Could there be a wee surprise heading our way sooner rather than later?
Went into the source code through some of their javascript files and found this URL:

The updated all-in-one iMac introduced today offers the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the most powerful graphics ever available in an iMac. The ultimate all-in-one desktop computer includes faster processors with 6MB L2 cache, a faster 1066 MHz front-side bus across the entire line, and 2GB of memory standard in most models. And the 24-inch iMac now offers a 3.06 GHz Intel processor and the high-performance NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS graphics as options. Available immediately, the new iMac starts at just NZ$1,899 inc GST.

you raise an interesting point, sir. the kids at apple are definitely subliminal bastards. Perhaps there will be some sort of bomb dropped on the last day of MW09?

Boy was I disappointed, I sat ready to finally-finally buy a new mini... Actually, what I was really hoping for, was the end of "the missing Mac", just a good modern stylish Apple desktop computer (4-8GB RAM, 3.5"HD, newest processor and graphics, BlueRay). What is Apple doing?! The Mac Pro is very big and expensive, and the Mac Mini is very small. In between is nothing. Yes; the iMac, but that's an all-in-one that I don't need/want. A new Cube is what I really want, or else a BIG mini. I made a page about it, here (http://www.laesieworks.com/digg/Where_is_my_Big_mini.html), and if you would like to digg it, go here (http://digg.com/apple/Where_s_my_BIG_mini). "The Best Is Yet To Come"? I hope so. WHEN?

Followed by some random San Francisco song.
I was watching it Live, and I heard it, I was hoping he was gonna come back on stage and say "Oh, and another thing!".
There'd be no point in Apple sparing the expense to go to a huge event like MacWorld, then on the last day randomly announce an update to the iMac/Mac Mini...
So, not gonna happen.

no new Mini,
but hey, Tony Bennett is incredibly smooth. And that's something, right?
..they haven't got rid of the final White MacBook from the Apple lineup either, well theirs always CES I suppose.
Well who else is infuriatingly disappointed?
N mini ... bummer. For the corporate customer a dual display mini .. perfect.
Tony Bennett ... interesting, but seemed odd.
White MacBook still for sale in store ... Firewire demand .

History would indicate otherwise. New Macs have been released shortly before a new version of the OS on several occasions.
True, but the key to Snow Leopard is multi core Improved support/utilization.
Intel announced quad core laptop processors.
There could very well be a linkage. I hope :D

I am beyond displeased that the Mac Mini is being neglected by Apple, yet they make a $2800 MBP for the BMW/Lexus crowd . I guess the Mac Mini is so practical as is, they do not want to compete against themselves on the higher end stuff. pathetic methinks. Mac Rumors buying guide should reflect the fact that it does not seem that one is coming soon, also of note is the lack of any refurbished mac mini's in the Apple store. thoughts?

I am ready to throw cash at a new mini. New body like the new macbooks (cut the screen, battery and voila you have a keyboard), faster processor, nvidea chipset.
