Apple has posted (http://www.macrumors.com/c.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.apple.com%2Fquicktime%2Fqtv%2Fkeynote%2F&t=1231237592) the QuickTime video stream of today's Macworld Expo keynote by Phil Schiller. Apple made a number of announcements at today's event:
- Apple Releases Aluminum Unibody 17" MacBook Pro (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/06/apple-releases-aluminum-unibody-17-macbook-pro/)
- Apple Announces Changes to iTunes Stores: DRM Free, Variable Pricing (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/06/apple-announces-changes-to-itunes-store/)
- Apple Releases iWork '09 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/06/apple-releases-iwork-09/)
- Apple Announces iLife '09 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/01/06/apple-announces-ilife-09/)
All of these announcements had been the subject of pre-event rumors, although several expected releases, including new Mac minis and iMacs, did not come to fruition. We will post a full rumor wrap-up in the next few days.

Instead of new stuff, perhaps they could finally deliver on stuff they've already promised nearly a year ago: like real push services for the iPhone ...
Has there ever been any more information about that? Or are they hoping no one noticed?

Apple believes Blu-Ray is dead (or going to be dead soon), they are pushing streaming content over AppleTv.

Honestly all I wanted to see was Snow Leopard, and I remember people saying a while ago that it would be at Mac World, pretty disappointed in the no-show. The new 17 macbook is nice ... 7 hour battery life is beastly. I hope they adopt this fixed battery for all the pro laptops. I'd like to see what the anti-glare screen actually looks like.
Overall this Macworld wasn't that stellar, which is sad, being the last one.
Gonna go watch the keynote now.

Just registered after a year of lurking, to say, what a total waste of reading time to see the summary of what must have been the dullest Mac expo ever.
Where was the Mini with 9400M? The Alu body? Something.
It's the only Apple I will buy for my first Mac, not gonna spend all that dosh trying out other hardware. Mini was Apple's entry level and its looking very dated now...
Major missed opportunity. I feel sorry for the poor chump Steve Jobs dumped that one on.... :(

Let's be honest, there wasn't much to introduce and Schiller still did a REALLY good job. His presenting skills were almost as good as Stevie J's rdf. I would imagine that when Jobs decides it's time to step down the board is going to have Phil be the next CEO.
I agree. It's not Phil's fault. He is just turning into a scapegoat here. That is just my opinion though. I was still disappointed as a whole. :(

2. A reason not to upgrade to ilife 09
3. A reason to build my own mac pro

Okay, let me get this right - Apple announce they'll no longer be attending the Macworld event, then deliver a spectacularly bad keynote, designed to leave a bad taste in the mouth. It's worked, everyone is moaning so Apple have done the right thing and pulled out of future events.

Others are having the same issue, I'd check back in a while to see if Apple has fixed this issue...

Just because it wasn't updated today doesn't mean it won't be updated at all. Apple has had a history of releasing hardware updates just after major events, so see what happens in the next few weeks. If I recall correctly the last time Apple updated the mini is was a rather silent update as well, although this update would hopefully be more significant.

No real reason for me to watch either. Knew it was going to be a letdown when they spend the first hour covering iLife and iWork... yawn...
At least they added a anti-glare option for the 17" and did it right by also removing the reflective black bezel too! Hopefully that is a sign that they will then add it to the 15", the MacBook and the iMac! I won't and can't buy a glossy screen - period.
I'm still hoping they will phase in iMac and Mac mini upgrades over the next couple of weeks (like they did last year). I have an Apple Developer Hardware Discount voucher I need to use before the end of the month and currently they don't make anything I'm interested in purchasing - even with the discount!

You're not alone. Typically, right after the Macworld keynote, everyone rushes in to watch the stream and as a result the feed stutters pretty badly unless you're lucky. Usually someone posts a direct download link to the movie file or it shows up as a free download in iTunes. If I'm interested in watching the keynote, I just start that downloading (which is excruciatingly slow) and go find something else to do for an hour or so.

So today we saw no Desktop Mac updates. They are all due for updates too. Especially the Mac Mini.
I think that what Apple will do is that within the next 3 months they will have a Desktop Mac Event where they will focus on the iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini. I highly think thats what will happen. So lets just wait and see. But I think we'll see another event before the end of March for sure.
Remember. This is just what I think though.

Not much of a secret. Applw will give out copies of Snow Leopard to anyone who signs up and pays a small fee to get on the developer's list. I asume Microsoft has many people signed up. I hope everyoe at MS' Mac Office team is.
If you can't afford the fee, All the latest Snow Leopard builds end of on bit torrent sites. Anyone who wants a look can go there and download it.
For the typical end user there is nothing to see. Some new APIs to learn if you are writing software
If you want to play with ZFS you are best off geting Solaris and running that inside VMware. ZFS is mature on Solaris but not ready yet on Mac OS.

Everything that was announced today looks good but I *NEED* a new Mac mini as I've just upgraded my TV to 1080p and my 1st gen G4 mini needs more poke to drive it without glitches.
So I guess I must wait yet again ... still if it means I get a free upgrade to iLife'09 then sweeeet 8-)
The mini is still the best value mac around and super for a HDTV media centre (Elgato eyeTV is simply excellent as a tuner).

You may not need to wait long. Apple has often released hardware updates after big events - just because they didn't announce something today doesn't mean you will necessarily have to wait forever. Give it a few weeks and see if the initial rumors are true - I'd be surprised if Apple truly EOLs the Mac mini. The only way I see this happening is if they transition it into a larger home media server, combining it with the Apple TV and Time Capsule.

I love how Phil is using one of the older cinema displays instead of the new one with the glossy screen. Probably because using a glossy screen monitor with all those studio lights would be near impossible to read the content on screen.....hmmmmmmmmm .

Lame MWSF.
Steve passed the torch to Phil to avoid the embarrassment of announcing no big deal products.

What is the goal of Snow Leopard?
- Stability
- Smaller binaries dropping power pc support
Considering that the new hardware is not ready and you still have changes creeping into the operating system from that angle and you got beaten up for relasing mega patches for Leopard. What would you do?
New hardware and snow leo will come hand in hand. Releasing snow leopard at the same time and not earlier will put another hardware generation between power pc's and the end of life in Mac OS.

I agree.
I wouldn't be surprised if they update the Mac Mini in the next few days/weeks. They are aware of the Mac Mini - its out-dated and over priced for current times. Also, by launching it at another event (other than Macworld) it would make sense for Apple re-iterating that 'Macworld is not needed'.

Patience :D
Yep - see my post above - Apple doesn't want to be tethered to these trade shows any more and be forced to release products on certain days in advance, so this will give them more flexibility. Apple has released updates to products lines shortly after major events previously, so I could easily see them updating the iMac, Mac mini and Apple TV in the next few weeks.

I've been following the Mac community since before the 2.5GHz G5 came out. Have been an avid Mac fan since. Honestly, I know my way around the hardware & software of a Mac.
Not once have I got one of these freaking streams to display!!
Is there some readme I'm missing out on? Is it sheer numbers stressing the servers?

Everything that was announced today looks good but I *NEED* a new Mac mini ...
I fully agree with this. I use iWork a lot and a number of improvements were really needed. I do not know whether I like the new internet based stuff, but we will see.
The only issue I have now, is the lack of new hardware (new screens and MacPro). I have to spend the money before mid of January to have it booked on the last fiscal year. Doubt whether that will be the case :(

This demonstrates exactly why Apple is planning on abandoning trade shows - they want to release products on their own schedule without having to be tied down to specific dates when people will have high expectations for them. It's probably going to be better this way...

Honestly all I wanted to see was Snow Leopard, and I remember people saying a while ago that it would be at Mac World, pretty disappointed in the no-show.
At best it would have been a demo, which wouldn't have been that exciting considering no major new features are promised.
Out of all the possibilities, this was probably the LEAST likely considering that apple said it will ship midyear.

Macword is kinda stupid, who puts a trade show right after xmas anyway?
I can understand why things aren't ready or not a good time show off. I can see in a few months the previous rumors will come to fruition.
Yep. Apple's big markets are general consumers and students. And they don't like to announce products too far in advance of when they are available.
So they would really want to announce major products in the summer and before the holiday season. Early January is about the worst time to target for major releases.

I Know that people say this after every keynote, but this time it's true! Worst Keynote EVER!
-No iPhone Update (Push?!?!)
-No Online iWork (I laughed so hard when he announced iWork.com and it's best feature is to share docs online)
-Integrated Battery in the 17''
-No new Mac Mini (?!?!?!?!? WTF?!!)
-No Steve (although Schiller wasn't that bad)
-Horrible band playing at the end of the keynote
-Top Songs now 1,29 (come on people, we all know that only old and unpopular songs are priced at ,69)
-No Iphone Nano
-No new iMac
-No Snow Leopard announcement or new infos.

Yeah, I know - and I'll be waiting along with a lot of other folks. Point is, Apple had a chance to give Phil a nice start to his keynote career by introducing a little bit more at the last Macworld - hopefully this means that Jobsy ain't done giving his keynotes just yet.

Let's be honest... this was totally expected!
One of the reasons why Apple wants to move away from these conferences, is this kind of crap from us rumour-hunters.
Every time it is the same ol' story...
Weeks building up to the MacWorld or WWDC Keynote are always full of rumours what to expect, and I think I am not far off when I say about 50% of the rumours actually come true.
Apple have said before that they want to move away from these events for hardware launches, and today is case in point.
The rumoured Mac mini and iMac are sure to be launched shortly. Presumably within a month, but if no form factor is changed and if it is only seen as an update, it will get a silent update.
Remember the new Mac Pro which was launched a week before MWSF '08?
Same test case, same proof.
Stop whining about not getting the products you hoped for at this event!!
The MBP 17" with its great battery deserved the time. iLife 09 and iWork 09 needed a demo. That was great.
Phil has done it well, even if he missed a word or two, but he has done the impossible: doing a Steve-note @ MWSF. And he did it very nicely indeed.
Snow Leopard?
Really, I thought it was already mentioned: it is far from finished! Why demo a mid-way beta @ MWSF?
IN short:
Good buy, MacWorld.
Hello, timely updates and press events for each one.
The rumour mill will get used it.

For me the keynote was all ok - iWork are now localized to swedish and finally Apple released a computer perfect for me to replace my aging PowerBook G4 17" (last PPC model, oct 2005). A matte 17" HD-screen + 256 GB SSD, great! (I couldn't care less about the absence of blu-ray)
Phil Schiller isn't Steve Jobs but he delievered a good enough keynote - the presentation must be fairly much "scripted" and the difference between a Schiller-keynote or a Jobs-keynote wasn't that dramatic after all
(I was expecting a much bigger difference. I guess the difference are more obvious when Schiller just comes on stage for a few minutes during a keynote held by Jobs)

This keynote video has two major things to point our and scream about.
1) No hardware that lots of people have been waited for. No iMac, no Mini, no Pro. Oh yes 17 inch MacBook Pro is a really good excuse. sure (said with irony).:(
2) Shiller is absolutely not good at presenting things. He tries to copy Steeve but cmon couldn't he try to at least make his speech creative a bit ? My personal feeling is that I see Apple's Balmer. Just listen Balmer - Shiller. Their names and bodies and manners are the same. Am I right a bit ?
Yes. those people were right who said that will be a new era with a slight modification - Its the end of the era. God, please no Shiller anymore. Please let it be Jony Ive to present things. HE has the passion.

Info on Snow Leopard - like estimated release date.
Blu-Ray support in Snow Leopard?
Other new hardware - iPhone Nano, iMac, mac mini
Updated iWeb (more than they did), iDVD?
Really I'm mostly interested in what is going to happen regarding Blu-Ray support.
Didn't you hear, BluRay is a "Bag of Hurt!" according to Steve, himself. I doubt we will see it in 2009 from all I have seen and read. I guess maybe in a Mac Pro but not in a MacBook. I personally am happy without hard media. I think digital via iTunes is great. But, I do understand it is becoming the industry standard. I mean, if Dell, HP, and Sony can do it, why the hell can't Apple???
I was sad there was no Mac Mini or Media Server. I really was thinking about going that route, especially if it was a "media" type deal in between a mini or Apple TV, but some Mac capabilities too.

Again I understand the frustration of the old Mac mini. For one reason or another it didn't get the updates alongside the MacBooks as we all expected.
Since the 10.5.6 nVidia-Mac mini rumours, we are expecting it.
And, really, it will come. Just not today. MacWorld keynote speech is not the time and place to "show" an updated Mac mini.
It is there for software demo's, cool new product announcements etc. Showing the press how well Apple are doing etc.

I think (based on no facts) that apple is either going to have one of their special events really soon (late january, early february) or it's just going to be a silent update. No one is expecting any external changes to imac, just the internals. They can then have people buying up the new imacs and then a month or two later have a special event for the mac mini. Judging by this I'd say the mac mini still has a few months to show up. Still think (and hope) imac update is happening really soon.

Pre-revision keynote script:
"This year it's all about the mac. And since you're already talking about new macs, I'm going to talk about something else"
Compare this keynote to the 2005 keynote when the Mini was first announced. Now THERE was a keynote all about the mac.
Schiller wasn't very convincing, but on the other hand he has some pretty big shoes to fill. However, the first engineer (the one with the round face, sits to the right of the screen) in the 17" MBP battery video was priceless. The way he delivers his lines, it's just like a POW video. Still use Safari for web browsing and google apps for calendar, email, etc. The other side ain't so bad. And I don't feel frustrated as hell when they DON'T release a new product
LOL, are you serious?

am i the only one thats having issues with this keynote? the stream seems very jittery, also when i resize it from the corner it crashes quicktime every single time.
I have the new 15inch macbook pro, and i am running on the gt9600. I just watched steves iphone keynote (like 5 min of it) and it seems way less jittery, but it still crashes when resizing. I opened an avi video of mine, and it resizes without issue. i will probably start another thread. but anyone experiancing this?

well i decided on this a long time ago though! And I still have a macbook pro unibody. But I decided to not give my hopes up whenever apple 'might' release something. builds great press, but never lives up to the hype.
Builds great press..?
When did Apple inform the press of a pre-announcement, aka RUMOUR?!?
The Mac mini will happen....! It will either:
a) get the MacBook Unibody specs (maybe nVidia has trouble deliveirng enough 9400 M's)
b) get a mobile Quad-Core Nehalem (we have to wait for this)
c) get one of the above with Media Server crap (we have to wait for either a) or b) )
d) get EOL. (maybe it should.... )
Which one? When?
Well, NOT A MACWORLD OR WWDC.
It's easy. When can we expect updated hardware from Apple?
EVERY TUESDAY, EXCEPT KEYNOTE TUESDAYS! :apple:
Unless Apple wants to fiddle with us... :p

It seems to me that this was the perfect place to announce a new mini. Really, are they going to have a separate event for that? Everyone's just going to say "ho hum, again." At least here they would have been bolstering the image of an updated product line. As for a "stealth" upgrade - why? What would be the point, when Apple could have at least gotten a little more positive publicity.
This makes me think there is no mini update in the works.

I'd feel better if people weren't saying that six months ago...and a year ago...
You can only be referring to the Mac mini.
And yes, I understand it. It has been about 580 days since the last update, and of course that is far too long... :o
Maybe there is a problem in getting the essentially MacBook elements into it..? Maybe nVidia can't deliver enough for both MacBooks and Mac mini's, and therefor Apple choosing it all for the MacBooks, and nothing for the Mac mini.
Maybe Apple really is developing Media Server-ish software, which must be bundled with a new Mac mini, and simply isn;t ready yet.

Surely not. I didn't build up my hopes at all, I had the lowest possible expectations but this keynote had the most disappointing new product of any I can remember.

Sarcasm noted, however I do think it is not unreasonable to see the above bolded products indeed updated in the next 30 days... As for a new mouse and keyboard, I don't see this as being very likely at all for a long time. The current keyboard is great, and Apple doesn't update their mouse offerings very often (rightly or wrongly) so I don't think it's fair to even have those on the list.

I totally understand why today's roll out was not so exciting. But the software updates are very cool and the DRM free iTunes too, but rolling out really great products in the worst economic time in fifty years would be a bad idea. Even for Apple.
Yes the die hards here are drooling for the latest and greatest but most people out in the civilian world are cutting back big time. They are holding on to their laptops and desk tops for another year. They don't need to replace a perfectly good iPod or iPhone with something slightly cooler, faster or hipper at the moment.
There is plenty of time for Apple to roll out new gadgets but January 2009 is not the right time.

Sorry, but your reasoning makes no sense to me. I hardly think that an internal battery, a la MB Air, makes the 17" MBP (whose other specs are similar to the already selling 15" version) keynote-worthy, in contrast to a completely revamped mini which legions of fans have been waiting for for ages. With Steve not showing up and the announcement this is the last Macworld event maybe this is Mac's way of down playing the significance of the event as a venue to bring out new items. If apple actually brought out new products that would go against every reason they would have to forgo participating in future events. This may also play into the reasoning for just demonstrating new software. I do not really count the new 17" Mac Book Pro since there really wasn't anything new introduced as a result of the recent 13" and 15" Mac Books.
Things are going to change...no longer with Macworld be used to introduce new Apple technology, but rather focus on third party hardware, software, and applications.

This was almost as yawning as the hifi release ...
I thought he said he was gonna talk about the mac? This should have been called macsoftwareworld
Perhaps they'll have a special event in February. Here's to hoping

For those complaining about Snow Leopard, surely it will be released at WWDC because its mainly a release which is of most interest to developers? Unless it had some new whizz bang feature I wouldn't want to see it at Macworld.
I am hoping it will be released some time before then. Apple mentioned that it would be about in the summer, so thats what I'm hoping for.
I bet the Mac Mini will have an update any time now. I'm sure that by March, Apple will have an entirely new model for about $499. The iPhone nano will probably be out the same time as a remodel of the current model in about 8 months. Or let's think about it this way- whenever we start to see some real convincing spyshots or leaks.

He did focus on the Mac... Apple seems to define "Mac" as anything related to Mac hardware or Mac software. None of the software introduced today runs on anything other than a Mac, at least legally and technically. Hence, it was focused on Macs.

is the video quality horrible?!?!?!
it's like thumbnail size and when i full screen it it's so pixely i cant barely make anything out
:mad::apple::mad:
u could fill an ipod's display with the coverage but nothing bigger :(
i think it might have to do with the iso setting on the video cameras ... (does that sound right?)

Great keynote...I think that Phil captured my attention as much as Steve Jobs.
Although we didn't get the new Mac Mini...they did introduce some really cool things.

Phil is now even thinner.
I was really hoping he was going to enter the stage by jumping from a great height with an iPhone Nano.
The best part of the event for me was Tony Bennett. I wish I'll age so well....

Because we all know that Tony Bennett has never once had plastic surgery or any kind of facial work.
Don't worry, you'll probably age just fine.

well i decided on this a long time ago though! And I still have a macbook pro unibody. But I decided to not give my hopes up whenever apple 'might' release something. builds great press, but never lives up to the hype.
Never say never now ... But OMG ... 64-bit Vista?

I'm watching the keynote stream while I'm typing this and I think that Phil is doing a great job. I find him more authentic and natural than Steve Jobs. I like that Phil comes across as just a normal person and a guy I can imagine drinking a beer with.
Of course, for a self-proclaimed "hardware company", the lack of new hardware is disappointing. But the new versions of iPhoto and iMovie look quite nice. I can't wait for Aperture 3 to come out with that face detection stuff. ;-)

Is Apple still a computer company? Most of their desktop offerings are a year old!

Why did Apple even bother?
Guess it is the HP media server for me! No mini, ugh, no server, ugh, nothing for the ole stu-miester this time around.

next tuesday apple will probably have a special event for the landmark stuff with steve.. in a smaller less populated area
Are we concerned about some sort of radioactive fallout? :D
On the other hand I think there will be a special desktop event, similar to the notebook event of a few months ago. Isn't that the reason Apple gave for pulling out of Macworld? To be more in control of their media events when releasing new products? It makes sense.

I just finished watching the keynote. I must say, it was very boring. And wtf was with Tony Bennett? Do ppl still listen to him? Apple is hip and cool. Tony Bennett is... old and wrinkly.

wow Apple is seriously dropping the ball
1- No new iMac
2- No new Mac Mini
3- No new Apple TV
4- No new Mac Pro
5- No new line - Mid Range Power Mac mid sized Tower
6- No Blu-Ray
7- No new LCD monitors
Apple is seriously dragging its feet on things and it is getting very annoying.
also, what are they thinking with no exchangable batteries???? on MBP 17"?
they are deluded if they think it is what consumers want. alot of us want ability to change the battery out, especially if traveling

Not just you.

I'm sure Apple will release all their new goodies in good time. Last year they released the MacPros a week before and the MacBook Pros a month or so later. From this forum it appears that the Mac mini would be the best bet for quick release in this economy.
:apple: Looking forward to a Tuesday surprise real soon!

Im guessing I'm one of few that actually enjoyed the most of the keynote?
The software still blows me away with how tightly apple is making everything integrate together. The iwork and ilife look fantastic, glad im going to get one free and one cheap in the hopefully not so distant future;)

Give em a break! Have you ever done engineering research? Things take time. Stuff happens. Ideas don't always pan out. Stuff happens. It's in their best interest to give us a product we want in a timely manner that works like its supposed to for a long time. That's not as easy as Steve Jobs and Apple make it look. Good riddance to MacWorld expectations!
Now every Tuesday could be an Apple Tuesday :)

Just for comparison, this keynote was right on par with the pre-iPhone Steve Jobs' keynotes.
For example ...
In 2008, Apple TV Take 2 update, MacBook Air, new iPhone firmware and Time Capsule
In 2007, iPhone announcement (shipped June), Apple TV announcement (shipped March), AirPort Extreme (802.11n, non-gigabit)
In 2006, iLife '06, iWork '06, MacBook Pro and iMac — that's it.
In 2005, iLife '05, iWork '05, iPod shuffle and the Mac mini — that's it.
In 2004, iLife '04, iWork '04, iPod mini, Final Cut Express — that's it.
Expectations for these events have just gotten out of control.
