I'm a big fan of Love Hina and Cowboy Bebop, and I've seen the first DVD of Dot Hack, which is interesting.

My favorite of all time though is Macross Plus.

Those Who Hunt Elves is a lot of fun, too. :D

I'm pretty selective or I guess I just don't watch much anime anymore.

Used to watch Kenshin about 4-5 years ago (before it became US mainstream a la Cartoon Network). GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) is also pretty nice.

Now I watch Naruto...where the heck is ep 73?!!! I'm gettin impatient haha.

Well I've been kind of wandering watching older Anime stuff since Cowboy Bebop is no longer making anything new. I came across a series on MTV2 the other night called Heatguy J. I really like it and think its on par with Cowboy Bebop on many levels.

Currently active stuff I am collecting (all sub btw. I HATE dub):

Mezzo DSA (damn good!)
Inu Yasha (good show, but its dragging lately)
Read or Die TV
Ghost in the Shell TV (Kusanagi Rulez! ;-))
Juuni Kokki (I do hope they make more of that show)
Onegai Twins! (still waiting for that OAV)
Chrno Crusade (While I like the show, I think that Studio Gonzo chose a horrible voice actress for Rosette, I would have liked the girl that did Chidori Kaname's voice in Full Metal Panic (another great Studio Gonzo show) much better)

My biggest disappointment lately was the new Tenchi Muyo! OVA 3 Series. Now I thought after the yucky Tenchi Tokyo we were through the worst, especially now that finally the people that wrote the original OAV are back on the team again but no... Now they even **** up the OAV. Very disappointing considering that Tenchi was what got me into Anime in the first place.

Those are, as you said classics. Same as Bebop or Evangelion. I only mentioned the stuff that I am currently collecting (which are shows that are currently running on Japanese TV and are being fansubbed). That doesn't mean that I don't have those two and a lot of other stuff in my collection that is older.

DBZ is japanese..... unfortunately, a good example that even japanese can produce low quality animation, not just Saban.
With Kenshin you will be disappointed, there is not much fighting going on in there, if you compare the TV series to the OAV.

I have to say I liked DBZ (Although I thought DB GT was a bit crap). But then the only Anime I have watched is DBZ, Gundam Wing and Pokemon (if you can call it Anime). The UK does not get much Anime compared to countries like the US.

have you ever read the manga for alita? i know it's cliché, but it really is tons better than the anime. the anime is decent, but can't hold a candle to the original. plus there's so much more story that happens after what's covered in the anime.

Agreed I grew up on Robotech. In fact I started watching it when I was 4 or 5 years old. At the time a lot of it was on while I was at school so my dad taught me how to work our Betamax recorder to set up the timer to record all my Robotech episodes. I have like the first 3 years of the show all on Betamax still.

No one mentioned my favorite 6 Episode Anime!
FLCL (furi kuri, fooly cooly, whatever)...

So random, teaches so many lessions... have to watch it alteast 3 times over...

Just so great...

I love Cowboy Bebop, though I'm pretty sure I haven't watched a few episodes... Anyone see Knockin' On Heavens Door (was open in select cities like NYC -- i saw it --> kicked)...

Problem with CN is they don't play them in any order... if they did I would find out if I didn't see any episodes... but its all random...

I also like Trigun, but again I have no idea wtf episodes I am missing...

Inyasha (spelling = bad) is a great series, which I had the DVD's or something, but again because of CN's bad schedule... I've missed almost every episode...

Hmmm what else... I have to give credit for Anime like cartoon shows like (arg why does clicking on the toolbar weblink thing not loading anyway) here: http://randsshrine.proboards26.com I'm a big fan of Teen titans, rather not anime, but done some in Japan some in the U.S...

Current Favorites

Naruto (manga, anime ----> read/watch the weekly releases)

Evangelion (manga/graphic novel series, but not all that far into it. Once i get some cash Im going to buy ep. 1 of NGE)

Shaman King (manga in the monthly Shonen Jump, really Americanized anime when I feel like watching it)

Cowboy Bebop (anime, manga/graphic novel series, feature film---> saw it in the theater. It ran for a maximum of 2 weeks (possibly even a week) at two theaters in San Diego. Kicked ass.

My first question would be, what anime have you seen? Lots of anime has the cheap production value problem.

If you want something that looks nice, I'd recommend Memories, which is by the same guy who did Akira. He makes sure that every frame gets drawn, and you can really tell the difference. Memories is a set of three stories, the first of which is kind of a thriller set on a space station, the second is a funny story involving a mix up at a drug research laboratory, and the third is a very thought-provoking story about war. All three stories are great, especially the third, and the production value throughout is awesome. Finding its equal on a purely technical level is not hard, Disney does that (but I personally enjoy the Japanese animation style to Disney's), but finding three unique stories that are worth watching is much more difficult, expecially in American animation.

If you're more interested in story, I'd suggest watching Macross Plus, first the OAV, then the Movie Edition. Mac Plus is a story about three friends who have a violent falling out, with two guys fighting over a girl and ruining the friendship. Seven years later they all reunite, and begin fighting again, only this time the two guys are test pilots on competing teams, and the girl is a producer for an AI controlled singing idol. Lots of charater development, plenty of action, stunning ending. Truly, I have yet to find its equal, even in Memories (which holds second place).

You could also try funny/ridiculous stuff, like Love Hina. It's about a guy who becomes the manager of an all girls dorm, and falls in love with one of the tenants, who likes him as well, but beats the **** out of him on a daily basis instead of admitting it. Lotsa fun. :D

Another high-production value anime is Ah! My Goddess! The Movie. Don't think you'd go for it right off the bat, but it looks nice, and is an enjoyable movie.

hm im in the same boat like angrylawngnome .. i watched a few anime-movies but i don't find them as entertaining like other comic adaptions..
perhaps i grew up in a different comic-enviroment...here in austria/germany 'comic' means 'funny little painted storys made for laughing (espacially for kids) '

in the past few years there more japanese tv-shows coming into television but most people watching them are kids/young teenagers ..
personnally i find all those fighting etc. very boring

I love the Asian fighting movies including Anime. It's such an incredible art form. For me it's like watching Extreme Sports. The people that participate in them are insane but at the same time are so damn talented you just want to see what impossible move they are going to pull next.

For the ones that dont like Anime, maybe you're just watching the wrong sub-genere... there are so many, they vary from Pokemon-types, to Akira.. sci-fi to sitcom-ish love stories, with all sorts of different themes in between. While I find most of them do have so sort of humor, I find that it's hard to translate some of the cultural type humor.

but if it's not your thing, then it's not your thing, nothing to flame over. Just like some like video games, and some don't.

DBZ is just long episodes of two minutes of action padded by another twenty of trash talk. I never figured out how anyone could be patient enough to watch it. Of course Yu-Gi-Oh's not any better (don't ask me how I know that). :o

Starblazers turned me into an unwitting anime fan in the first grade, and Voltron reinforced it. Curiously, I managed to miss Speed Racer and Robotech, though...I only own Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus and Vampire Princess Miyu (the non-TV version) so far; I gave up on Fushigi Yugi (yeah, I know I misspelled it) because it just got so unbearably LONG.

I liked Evangelion right up until the point Studio Gainax ran out of money to make it, and want to buy Serial Experiments Lain. And of course, the classics like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D (like the sequel better though), all the Studio Ghibli stuff (yep, probably misspelled that too). Inu Yashi's kinda fun but will wear thin eventually, like Ranma does after a while.

At the moment I'm mostly into Trigun, since the translated manga are now becoming available here--the anime was made before the manga were finished (in fact the manga are still ongoing in Japan!) so the anime storyline diverges from the manga quite a bit in order to give the series an ending (an ending I don't quite buy, but that's another discussion).

I...want to buy Serial Experiments Lain.
I managed to pick it up for 20 bucks at half.com :-). (entire series) However that was a year ago, it came in this really nifty lunchbox too :-). Haha FLCL is such an odd series, I mean a robot just randomly pop's out of the guys head? I was like "uhh...". Anyway, Bebop is goodtimes hope all you anime haters just watch some of these great shows before you cast an opinion on the entire genre :-P

Looks like you have been Watching too much Dragon Ball Z!

:ducks flames:

Really... The intrest is that Anime has genres like
Sci-Fi: Akira
Musshy stuff: Love Hina, Pia Carrot
Fighting, Action: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop
Fighting + Weird Girlish Aspect: Inuyashsa
Robots fighting: Gundam ____ (name any number and/or letter and you have yourself a REAL Gundam series :ducks flames:... how many are there... 20? 30? Too frikken many)
Pr0n: I'm not naming stuff, its out there. [Be warned. Also it goes by another name, previously mentioned in this thread]
And just random stuff compiled into a show: FLCL (fooly cooly)

Yes, these are super over generalizations but still, it spans categories -- you need to look at what you think you will like.

I suggest some nice Cowboy Bebop to start you off, a great show for all.

Yep. Favs are:

Voices of a Distant Star (Very well done short film.)
Gasaraki
Outlaw Star
Ghost in the Shell (Series and movie.)
Spriggan (Its a wanna be cross between an indiana Jones movie and a bond movie but its fun ride.)
Cowboy Bebop (Series and movie.)
Jin-RoH: The Wolf Brigade
Blue Gender
Mobile Suit Gundam (Movies. Not really interested in the series.)
Inuyasha
Robotech (Old school TV series.)
Voltron (Old school TV series.)
Mysterious Cities of Gold (I grew up with this series as a kid. Watching it now I realize damn I had bad taste but its still a run ride.)
Not Jap Anime but still good: Transformers, Silverhawks
DOH! What was I thinking?!?! I forgot Hellsing. I just got the complete DVD set about 2 weeks ago. I love it.

Also I'm really looking forward to a new animated movie that will be coming out called Kaze: Ghost Warrior. (Link) (http://www.ghost-warrior.com/) Its an anthropomorphic animated movie strictly done by one person two computers. (Sorry guys I think they are PCs.) The previews on the link above look intriguing. While not strictly Anime its in the same vein and has peaked my attention enough to preorder the DVD.

Ugh, i too agree that DBZ as an anime "example" is simply horrible. I honestly hate that show the stigma that it creates and perpetuates as "anime".

Kenshin, Evangelion, Gundam, and Cowboy Bebop are far better examples, though Kenshin and Gundam are already being "Americanized" (dubbed, edited, basically f-_ked with, while subbing would have been the better option).

Sometime i hate cartoon network, but i suppose giving them Kenshin vs. DBZ is a far better option.

By the way, Akira and Evangelion are pretty...well psychological. I dunno, but sometimes I'm a lil freaked out by how strong they push the thematic values in the series...powerful stuff (and please, DO NOT watch the dubbed trash, demand subbed, and subbed only :) )

My introduction to anime came in the form of a movie called "le blu girl" (sp?) which scarred me for life (OMG! wasn't expecting that) but I still gave other stuff a chance. "Perfect Blue" is probably my favorite animated film of all time, Japanese or otherwise. Not only is it a great animated film, but it works fantasically just as a general horror film. I've seen pretty much all the great works of horror cinema, and I'd place "Perfect Blue" in my top 10 horror films of all time (With the likes of "Repulsion", "Psycho", and the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"). Yes, it's really that good.

Satoshi Kon, the director of "Perfect Blue", has been pretty busy lately - two more of his films were released in the U.S. in 2003, "Millenium Actress" and "Tokyo Godfathers" (a remake of "3 Godfathers"). "Millenium Actress" I felt was excellent, and it earned a place on my top 20 of 2003. I sadly missed "Tokyo Godfathers" in its one-week theatrical run in Denver. :(

Here it was I have watched:

Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
Movies
Ghost In The Shell
Akira (subbed and dubbed)
Cowboy Bebop
Read Or Die
Armitage III (don't ask abour I and II, they don't exist :p)
other stuff that I happen to have forgotten about

I am currently in the process of watching:
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex (season 1)
Hellsing
Read Or Die (TV)
I am currently "acquiring":
Love Hina (and some specials)
Read Or Die (TV)
Other stuff.

I've read the Love Hina manga and it's great, as is Battle Angel Alita, and its sequel, Yukito Kishiro is a genius! Also, I've read most of Akira, and the beginning of another series by the same author, called "Adolf".
