Hello folks,
I really hope someone can help me.

I have an external Western Digital firewire 200Gb hard drive which, just tonight, started clicking and slowed down to unworkable speeds. Also, just when I thought it might be finished displaying it's directory listings, it would reboot and hang the computer (G3 pismo, OS9.2.2).

Any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I've a lot to lose.

Try a different firewire cable. First though try blowing out the firewire ports on the drive, computer, and the blow out the cable ends. Sometimes dust really affects these firewire cables.

back up your data! do it now! clicking hard drives are bad news. it's often their way of saying "hi! i'm about to crash and burn!" i had a western digital in my office go belly-up a few weeks ago, beginning with the notorious 'click of death.'

the good news is that WD shipped out a new one with no hassle. but before yours goes completely, back up everything!!
