So, looking at the apple site, I know that they officially support 4gb (2 x 2gb), and I know there are only 2 slots... But OSX is 64bit right, and the mac pro can take 32gb, so why can't the iMac take 2x4gb for an 8gb total?
anyone tried it?
I'm looking at this memory:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147%201052108080%201052321736&name=4GB
for the new (for now) 24" iMac with the 3.06 processor.

Yes, it's been well covered. The search tool is your friend.

yeah, I've found these 2 threads:
6gb confirmed: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=607076
8gb ???: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=574102
but what's the final answer for this iMac:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB398LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
Refurbished iMac 24-inch 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB memory
500GB hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS
would I be the first guinea pig for 8gb? Also, I'll be running LR2 and CS4 on this doing a ton of image editing for my sites, so that's why I'm interested. That and I'll be playing with iMovie so RAM is bound to help with video right....

4GB sticks are easy to find on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231181
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134863
but I'm wondering if I should just get 2 of those ($200 though) or go with one 4gb and one 2gb:
g.skill 4gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231181
g.skill 2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231111
total $130.98
Kingston 4gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134863
Kingston 2gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134636
total: $114.48
do macs "like" either of those better? I've used Kingston before, but g.skill is a new name to me... I've heard them referenced as good, but is there any difference between those two? And will the iMac recognize 2 x 4gb, or just the 6? $130 -vs- $200+ is making me lean towards the 6gb anyway though.

I wouldn't try 8 gb unless you're willing to test it (I can provide you the app) and send one of the 4 gb sticks back for a refund. It probably will choke with 8gb, but 6gb is fine.

ok thanks, so is the heat sink on the g.skill worth it? Is there any other difference between those 2 beyond price?
and yeah, I'm leaning heavy toward the 6gb setup. Price and the fact I'm coming from 2gb now... I actually ordered the 4gb kit for $45 last night not knowing any better. I'm not sure if I'll keep that to see how it goes with 4gb and or wait on a price drop for the 4gb sticks, or if I'll return it....

OK, so those links above are for 240 pin sticks.... The iMac takes 200 pin sticks right?
so I went back and looked for 4gb 200 pin and this is all I could find:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231202
it's listed as DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), not 800/6400... So is it just slower, but it'll work? I can't seem to find any 4gb, 200 pin 800/6400 memory anywhere?
plus that 4gb stick is $200, so that pretty much kills this idea for me.
