Why can't I get anything from itunes

Ok so I just got this touch and I want to get free Aps but it won't let me. It tells me to connect to itunes so I do and then it tells me to put my credit card info In. If it's my first time do I have to pay? I mean it's a free app.

Your credit card is used to determine if you are old enough to make purchases. It's only used to set up your account. You are not charged anything until you make a purchase.

You can actually create an iTunes Store Account without a credit card. Take a look at this Apple Knowledge Base article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534)
