Generally I would support a law banning sports analogies from the opinion page. But in this case only the sporting metaphor can explain the Florida result. The winner didn’t win because he was better. He won because a breeze pushed a game-winning field goal wide right. He won because a fan reached over the fence and snatched a home run ball. He won because the opponent’s buzzer-beater rolled around and around and fell out. He won not because he was better or more prepared or more fit, but because the clock said 0:00.
