Just stopping in to say thanks to all of our supporters. We are in limited Beta right now and the application is nearing it's release.
As always, check out www.starplayr.com for the latest.
Thanks again to everyone.

Oh hey, now I don't have to. :) Yay Leopard XM.

We have StarLightXM for Mac that supports both Sirius and XM on Mac.

That's what I meant, StarLight XM. But I stink. It works nice, PAD data on R&F ch202 is updating just as fast as on my Inno.
BlackBerry is under way... some minor hurdles so far.
I'm sure your release when you guys get it out will blow away the official XM Blackberry app. Its only got 20 channels and costs $6 a mo.

Definitely... ours will be a one time purchase and will offer all channels they currently stream over the internet... plus have album art, lyrics, etc.

I'm not sure if the games are played over the internet streams or not. I don't listen to sports much.

Will the sound quality be as good as the internet streams? I know the XM BlackBerry app was aweful. The sound was so badly compressed it made it sound so tinny.

It will sound as good as the internet streams if at all possible. I believe the sound quality issue lies in their need to transcode which we will be avoiding if at all possible.

Most of the sports channels aren't available online, for XM anyway.

The newer Blackberries - the ones with names - can play WMA files and support streaming audio in the browser, hopefully that will negate the need to transcode :)

To be honest it is too early to tell. It depends on how many man hours need to go into it. I can tell you the RIM SDK is not that great, and their developer support is poor at best (or at least the support they are willing to give me.)
iPhone we have an idea but are not ready to announce the price just yet.

Will you be able see what's playing on each channel while browsing the channel listing? Kinda like how it works on the actual receiver.. you can see the channel name, band name, or song name I think.

So glad to hear this app is coming out now i will die every day it is not out . Only thing about knowing something is coming is not knowing when :D . I just wish sirius would add some sports channel so i could listen to my notre dame football next year when the wife drags me to disney on saturdays.

Can you please give us a hint to a timeframe for its release.
i dont understand all of the hush hush, a ballpark estimate for price and release date will cause no harm, i mean we are the buyers here and regardless if you tell us now or later what it costs those who want it..want it...and those who dont...dont.
every place i read about this has the main person in charge holding back on a release date but simply saying soon...if you are so confident on its soon release date then what is wrong with saying "by the end of january" or "the end of february"?

I'm starting to see this the same way. If music is about the only thing that streams online, why buy another app when there's already great, free apps out that have the same amount of variety? I think most of us want the sports and talk radio to go, but it sounds like those aren't streamed.

As others have said, some are. For example, this app will be useful for me, since I am a Sirius subscriber only for the Howard Stern show, which is streamed online. If you don't have any interest in them, then it won't be useful for you at all. My recommendation is to go to Sirius' website and go to listen online, and see what is streamed online, so you can know.

All the talk and sports-talk channels you subscribe to except the game channels are available online. MLB Home Plate, NHL Center Ice, Nascar racing channel, NBA talk channel, NFL talk channel, BCS channel, NCAA channel, ESPN radio, SiriusXM Sports with the Mad Dog, The Virus, Howard Stern, Oprah, Martha Stewart, and so on... check the program guide.
Sure there are free alternatives to satellite radio with the iPhone, AOL Radio comes to mind, the stream hundreds of FM and AM stations to your radio. And you can probably get your sports game radio that way. But the great service that the guys from StarPlayr provide is moving Sirius and XM off the web clients for your desktop PC - which SUCK - and making it into something that just works right.

Yeh, and um...Howard Stern is NOT the argument FOR satellite. (Seriously, how does this guy still collect such a large paycheck?)
I understand what you mean about your own music is better. Nobody's playlist is better than mine. But where do you go for new music? I've been using Pandora for years, and I just can't seam to get very much NEW music out of them. And every once in a while, I get tired of shuffling my own songs, and want someone else to DJ.
I've been waiting on this app for a LONG time. And I can only hope and pray that the sound quality is up to par (at least 128k). Anything less and I can hardly listen to it.

I am also waiting for this one, but from what I can tell do not hold your breath for this one anytime SOON... I think it will happen, but it has taken almost 7 months to get to the BETA. Im a long time user of the OSX client and it's very NICE I have no doubts that the iPhone client wont match the desktop in every way..
Ive just grow tired of waiting. They even had it announced on Howard Stern (through a caller) saying it was out and I rushed to find it but nothing than I found out they are in BETA, and nothing has been submitted to APPLE yet, which we know will take a month to approve. So we need to be patient its going to be about 2 months I feel..
Though I hope Im wrong!!!
Also no more beta spots, I missed out I even wanted to feature the APP on my site..
Guess Ill wait for the final.

We didn't have anyone announce anything, anywhere. Someone called in and mentioned our products.
Also, 4 new clients have gone out in the past 3 1/2 months.
StarPlayr for Windows Mobile will go on sale within the next week or so.
iPhone is under testing with ~300 users right now.
We have desktop application for Windows and Mac, with more coming soon. The desktop clients are free.
BlackBerry and Android Mobile Platforms are under development as well.
Remember, we all have day jobs, and there are only 4 of us... and we have still managed to get a massive amount of server and client side software into production.

I agree it's a massive undertaking for what you have accomplished. The comment I was referring to was on Nicemac or geekbox im not sure telling people to call into Howard Stern than someone did and than the thread was alerted to say lets wait for a release first.
Anyway Im not bad mouthing you I love the products Ive used this will be great as well, just trying to temper the excitement as were still a ways off.
Good luck and thanks for your efforts.
Also can you tell me how the channel updates are going to be handled? Thats a big concern as if you must resubmit to apple each time the channels could be out of whack for weeks at a time.

So as everyone has heard, the Usirius application for the Iphone is no longer a dream and is hopefully becoming a reality shortly. I've heard through the grape vine or as some may call it the dragons mouth haha, that the great guys of starplayr are currently in the process of beta version 2 now. All is well but I guess there were some fixes that needed to be made and needed a little more testing before they submit the app to apple. I'm under the impression as how it was explained to me that once the app is submitted to apple it will more than likely get approved because apple has a lot of pressure on them to have an app like this. When it comes to sirius themselves they will probably be happy to have an app like this. I was also informed that the app should be available on through the app store by February and not later than march. One can only hope that it will be sooner than that.

I hope the reception over EDGE is good. At times Pandora is spotty and AOL was weak at best. However, I do not know how much of that was due to the application/s or the network reception.

Yes, but I don't want one of those floating around in the cabin. I already have a device that plugs into the cd-in and allows me to hook up an iPod or my iPhone, which I can then put away in one of the cubbies out of sight. :)

I think with their new release of the mobile version their just advertising it. Im sure when the iphone app is ready all you will see is that. The last thing they said was that it was looking good. We would have heard something if something is wrong. This is my most anticipated app.

It'll be GREAT to have this to listen to the b-b-b-boys indoors away from a home dock and not in the city, live. My Inno sure as heck doesn't pick up signal at the gym. :-P It kinda makes me want the Howard radio... Stilleto-2 I think, its got the wifi. But I got the lifetime XM, so until they really really merge, not happenin.

Congrats on getting the WinMo app out! :D
Hopefully they'll bring XM's online streams in line with Sirius soon. The damn channels are the same, it has to waste money to have separate streams right? The pennycounters should get that taken care of damnit.

Wow I read something up a few posts threat scared me.
Is this app approved by Sirius as an official streamer? I understand that there are 3rd party streamers for the PC and that doesn't seem to conflict with Sirius business strategy, but this app clearly could.
Unless Sirius is getting a cut of the proceeds for this, they could simply kill this client from releasing once it's done.
If for $1.99 you can buy this app and stream the music, and talk radio what happens to their portable unit sales?
Sirius could decide to push there own client with their own ads built in etc..
I hope this has been thought out and discussed or all this hard work could be moot.

How so? Sirius generates revenue through subscriptions, not through advertising or sale of streaming apps. I would argue that the opposite is true - if this app lets people listen who wouldn't otherwise subscribe, it's a good thing.

Jan 16, 2009, 03:21 PM
I think the question is that it could potentially get people to change from a full subscription to an online only subscription (about half the price). Sirius could lose money there as well as from less people buying their hardware since an iphone could be seen as a replacement for a standalone radio (even though not all channels are available online).
I'm sure the creators of the app have considered this. Not a done deal until you see it in the App store, but it sounds like they are expecting it to be approved.

Jan 18, 2009, 02:39 AM
SiriusXM benefits from more people listening to their service. Initial cost of the radio may be holding people away from the service - especially the high cost portable units. Mine still retails at $199, and I bought it three years ago. I got it on Amazon for $119ish, but that's not the point. But then on top of that I had to add a car kit for $50. I'm pretty sure they include that now...
Having an app out there will allow SiriusXM to reach more people. People love the app store and iPhones. Any watercooler will have buzz about apps now and then. That and XM was developing their own iPhone app half a year ago that nobody has seen since, but their product teases are notoriously long. Look at the XMP3 player, that was pushed as the new hotness for at least fifteen months before it came out. Then there is an official XM app for BlackBerry and some other select phones, even though it sucks, so the company has at least shown interest in mobile web delivered radio before.
Easier accessibility to satellite radio can only increase subscriptions. In addition to the cost of the radio, as mentioned before, that radio has to see the sky. I can't use my Inno at the gym worth a damn, but I can use my BlackBerry there no problem. Inside your house too, if your radio isn't docked with an outdoor antenna attached, you're screwed. (Unless you have the Howard radio with wifi... which is $329 plus accessories... and maybe you have wifi at the gym... but my sub is XM so I don't have that option, blech)
A large portion of satellite radio subscriptions are car-based, and a lot of those cancel after their free three months to one year that was comped with the vehicle purchase. SiriusXM would love for you to take that radio you pay for, and keep paying for it, listen at home and on the way to work, then wherever you go online. It would make Mel Karmazin's day to have this app. It could save satellite radio.

Sirius/XM announced today that rate hikes are in order beginning March 11.
The first one is one that will affect this new app. Previous to March 11, the online stream of Sirius/XM was free On March 11, it will cost 2.99 in addition to your monthy sub price. You won't be allowed to just sub to the online stream without a month subscription already in efect.
This online stream will increase to 128KBPS since it is will be for an extra fee.

So much for this merger being "for the customer". That was a crock of **** from the get-go. I guess at least it'll be better quality, but now I can look forward to coughing up another $36/year.

In other words, even if you bought no equipment, to get Sirius/XM on your iPhone it's going to cost $15.98 a month. (12.99 plus 2.99)
A one-time cost for a radio is nothing compared to that if you decide to stick around.
Sirius/XM, all things considered, should be begging Apple to approve this thing.
Begging, I say.

I hadn't seen yet that the quality was going to increase to the 128kbs stream. I was worried the bump would come just as a fee and no added service. Honestly, I'm okay with this. The subscription base has raised in recent years (regardless of the merger) and it's not like it's free for them to maintain their server capabilities or their bandwidth for the internet portion.
I would also hope this means more channels will be available, but I think that has more to do with contractual issues and desire on the part of Sirius|XM.

However, I can't help but wonder how much the recently announced charge for online content will impact this (in addition to the charger per version of this application).
Does anybody have any insight if Sirius|XM is to receive a cut of profits from this? I'd expect their main benefit from this would be in the form of new subscribers who are only interested in online content.

True, however I've had my Sirius subscription for going on 4 years now and haven't had a price increase. Without any talk of monopoly and "see, this would happen", I don't see this as too unreasonable - especially since the quality will increase with it as well. They could just as easily increase the base subscriptions as well, but aren't (yet anyway). If you take into account inflation prices should probably be $1-2 more anyway.
If you want to look elsewhere Version has easily increased the price of their FIOS TV service by $10 since launch a year or two ago. Additionally, they now charge extra for additional HD channels, so really the increase is more like $15+.

Sirius knows about the upcoming app and existing Windows, Mac, and WinMo clients; certain shows (hoo hoo) have even talked about and prompted them, and no efforts to force cease and decist of operations has been made. This kind of app will only build buzz for the service.

Does anyone think it's just a coincidence that as of March, online listening on SiriusXM is now going to cost $2.99 and now all of a sudden the Starplayr is going to be available? My guess is that the Starplayr is going to be released just before we have to pay for online listening to generate buzz, this will allow Sirius customers while obtaining additional revenue.
I am staying onboard either-way, but the timing does seem peculiar.

I mainly listen to talk stations... I prefer my mp3s or Pandora for music. It sucks that I have to pay for the "bitrate upgrade" since the talk stations won't be broadcast at 128k anyways. I actually do most of my listening online... I may look into an online only account. Nice to have the car radio when you need it though.

Personally I don't see what all the crying is all about. I've been with Sirius for just over 5 years now and in that time not once did my subscription price go up. So now it's going up by $3 for the internet access. Big Deal, I think after 5 years I could afford a $3 increase. Where else have you been in the past 5 years without a price increase?
Also, in the past, you only got to "try it out online" free for a few days. So charging for just internet access is not something new. You can pay $12.95 a month for "just" the internet stream, or pay $15.95 for the internet stream and the satellite radio broadcast.
Personally, I look forward to the iPhone access and hope it comes out soon. The more ways I can listen to Sirius, the better snce there are more ways to access the content.
I don't understand why everyone thinks that because it's on an iPhone, or any other smartphone or computer device, it has to be free.

A $3 increase per month doesn't sound like much, but it is a 23% increase over what we are paying now. I just find it to be a surprising move for SiriusXM right now with them struggling to keep listeners and their stock price down to around 10 cents. I'm a little hesitant to renew my subscription with a company that could be going bankrupt.
I also thought one of the conditions for allowing the merger was they had to lock in current prices for a while.

That was a condition of the merger. However, they can probably argue that the internet access was a benefit that they were giving for free rather than a feature of your subscription. So technically the price of your satellite radio service has not increased.
I agree with Scott that this isn't a big deal. If it's that much of an annoyance then don't pay to have access to the online access. If it is then it's only an extra $2.99 a month.
Also, it's sentiments like these, I'm a little hesitant to renew my subscription with a company that could be going bankrupt. that completely baffle me.

You don't seem to realize that satellite radio's killer is already here - and it's on your phone. It's called Internet radio and as the Internet becomes more and more ubiquitous, you'll be able to tune in services like Last.fm or Pandora anyhow. Even talk and news streams will be delivered the same way.
Internet coverage is not quite to the point where it's reliable enough to be widespread, but it's getting closer. Certainly if you are in an urban area it's almost there.

I have been beta testing the uSirius StarPlayr since Jan 9 and I have very little issues with it. The build that I have been testing is from Jan 4 and it is rock solid with the only real issues normally being caused by the data connection. When driving it does lose connection briefly sometimes but almost always its only for a few seconds as the buffer catches up. When I have a 3G connection it is perfect its when going from 3G back to edge that the issues happen but this has been the case for all audio streaming apps that I have used. I am very excited for the final version with the few issues that they are fixing or new features like being able to re-order your favorite channel list.
I have no doubt that they could submit this app this week. They have had 4 weeks of additional development since the beta that I am testing was issued and thats more then enough time to have implement fixes. I even think they could have went live with the version that I am using since its a lot less buggy then some other apps that I have gotten from the App Store.

Technically the rate of basic service has not changed, but the services provided post-merger have. You now get a few more channels whichever side your sub is on, and still pay twelve bucks. Its a give and take, I don't see anything wrong with it, but I rarely use the online streams in all honesty.
The whole internet radio will kill satellite radio debacle is really not worth arguing. Internet radio is in legislative trouble and the majority of satellite radio use is in vehicles and chain businesses, two areas its not quite convenient to deliver internet radio yet. We still can't get reliable AT&T service in New York City half the time, and the damn telephone was invented just across the river. Maybe it will get better when the DTV changeover finishes and those frequencies goto cell service... But that is a long ways from now.

When internet radio can be in my car and work anywhere in North America, then satellite radio is dead. Until then, it's not going anywhere. And since internet radio would require that practically every square inch of this country is blanketed in either WiFi or 3G, then it's never going to happen.

Wrong. All it has to do is blanket major cities. Mountain men don't pay for satellite radio. Even so, widespread wifi is just around the corner. Right now, I get way better coverage on internet radio than satellite. Solid 3G everywhere I drive every day. And since we have no repeaters in our city, satellite will drop out downtown driving next to tall buildings, in tunnels, even large trees. Not to mention, satellite is useless indoors. I'm with Usoandso, I give it 2 to 3 years.

Really? Mountain Men don't pay for it? What sort of proof do you have? I lived in the middle of nowhere for 4 years (where the closest 3G coverage was easily 80 miles away) and I know plenty of people, myself included, who paid for satellite radio. And even in cities with no repeaters, I've never had issues with dropouts near buildings or trees. Tunnels are a problem, but we only have 1 in the St. Louis area and I don't even think it's half a mile long, and since it goes right under the runway at the airport, the only thing you're probably going to be able to hear are jets landing and taking off.

I wouldn't consider $12.99 steep at all (if indeed that is what the cost ends up being). Apps of this type on other platforms run anywhere from $9.99 up to the $24.99 range from what I've seen.
It takes a considerable amount of time for someone to code an app like this and the target group is somewhat limited since you must have a subscription to Sirius online radio to use the app. I can definitely understand the developer wanting to see some compensation for his work.
Just my 2 cents.

I'll bet the app comes out on March 11th, just as the online feed no longer becomes free. If the developer really wanted to make money with this app, they would have pushed Apple to review it sooner. Otherwise, its tough to sell people on buying a 13 dollar app for a service they also have to pay for. I think the developer should rethink that original price tag since by the time the app is available the service will no longer be free.

In just seeing the promo video on your website, there were a lot of features I didn't even know about. It seems like there is a lot of insider info and not a whole lot of publicity. About half or more of the Opie and Anthony staff have iPhones, and thats not including the comedians that they have come in, including Robert Kelly (of Tourgasm fame). If you showed this app to these guys, they (along with the pests) would have XM get this on the app store yesterday.

I hate to burst your bubble but I don't think that Sirius XM (or the pests... or even Hoo Hoo's fans.. or whatever they're called) have enough pull to get it through any quicker.

Looking forward to the sirius app except that I can't get it to work online, even though I am paying for the subscription already for a couple of radios. That's unfair though because you're talking about one specific station/feed/stream in that app. There are hundreds (if not more) streaming music stations available through FlyCast (which is the app in question... it's on the app store).

Wont matter anyways.... Reports just came out that Sirius is pending a bankruptcy filing that would be probably announced tomorrow if not before the end of the week.
This app sadly may be a little too late especially at the $12 price point (when their other clients are free) if Sirius|XM files for Bankruptcy people will be leaving in droves due to prices probably going up and much of the talent getting the axe etc.

You have to love posters like Goodeye. First they do charge for those other apps. Second just because a company is bankrupt doesn't mean the shop closes. Gotta' love the drive by posts with no fact. What exact study shows people will leave in droves? SIRIUSXM is one of the largest subscription based media services with 18+ million listeners, and SIRIUS XM has been in doom for a while. How come they havent left yet?
Plus $12 is nothing, if you can afford a month of SIRIUSXM you can buy this app, which allows you to listen anywhere service is provided. Some people on these boards, and on the interwebs in general always complain about pricing, nobody forces anyone to buy anything. I beta test this app, it is phenominal, if you have a sub, this is the best radio app available. It is unreal, this and Pandora are heads and above anything else you will be offered. Just on content alone SIRIUSXM stands above.
Congrats to Dave and the Nicemac/uSirius/Geekstoolbox team. I can wait to purchase the app after all the beta goodness they have given me.

SiriusXM won't be going anywhere. What they need to do is get rid of a lot of their DJ's...we don't need them to tell us whats coming on because of the pad data, and I really don't care what they think of the music. Also, hoo hoo Howie needs to take a giant pay cut and maybe sell his house in the Hamptons. And, there may be some more commercials on some of the music stations for a bit. But Mel needs to stop giving away these large contracts.

Sirius XM Prepares Bankruptcy Filing :
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/11/technology/companies/11radio.html
No, this doesn't mean sat radio will be going away... but there are likely some big changes coming. With this coming, the bad economy, and Sirius-XM already announcing a fee increase for online listening, this is obviously not the ideal time to be releasing the app. I also agree that the $13 charge for the app is too high.
I've been a Sirius subscriber for years and I love it... but like others have said, you can set Orb up to stream sirius for free. They would reel in a lot more people if the app was $5 or less.

I bet apple will not approve this app until they are sure that people will not be buying a 12.99 app that will not work if they go away. Everyone will want their money back and Apple will have to deal with that. Apple does not want that. I bet is way into March before this thing is approved.
And the app to get stern works for me.....

I can understand that logic but I'm not sure that anyone could make a claim against Apple about this (though I'm sure many would). They could always add a disclaimer if they were concerned.
Also, even Sirius XM files for bankruptcy today I don't think it would have any immediate affect on a lot of the programming and it would be several months (at least) before any significant changes are made... I'm just guessing though.

Yep, this is what I do for Sirius on the iPhone also. But I have a Sirius app for my WinMo phone and it does have the advantage that you don't need a home server that requires, for all practical intents and purposes, a PC. Of course, this might all be an exercise in futility if Sirius goes under which could happen at any moment.

Bankruptcy does not mean a close of business, and they haven't filed. There's 20 million or so subscribers that somebody would love to pick up for the cost of SIRI's debt, and the company can be restructured into a profit making enterprise in the right hands.
DirecTV was hemmoraging not so long ago themselves, when GM dumped them off. Look at them now. Its not so different.

Not sure how accurate this is, but I have heard that the 20 million subscriber number is largely exaggerated. I think they count free trial subscriptions that are given to people who buy a car with Sirius built in. Unfortunately, a lot of those people don't end up renewing their subscription after the free trial runs out. There was also talk one time that they were even including the unsold cars still sitting on dealers lots in their "subscriber" numbers. The actual number of paying subscribers may be significantly less than 20 million.
I've been a subscriber for 5 years not, so I hope they get something worked out. No way I can go back to FM... I'll have to find a bunch of podcasts or something to entertain me if Sirius goes under.
MadDog31
Feb 14, 2009, 10:06 PM
I thought I recalled that back in the days when the two were separate companies, XM counted actual subscriptions and Sirius counted actual subscriptions PLUS any and all cars that had Sirius radios installed, whether they were being driven or sitting on a showroom floor.
Anyone care to verify this? I'm too lazy...

I think that it is evident that Apple will not be approving this app any time soon for one reason or another. If you have been watching the app store there have been numerous new applications that have been place into the app store only to have updates, sometimes multiple, come out for the app 2-3 times that week. Not sure why they would be so hesitant to release it, but I am fully convinced that if this was a different kind of application it would have been approved already, something is not right here.

Again, apple is not going to release a 12.99 dollar app that might not work here in the short future. They are waiting to see what happens with Sirius/XM in the coming weeks. You know how many fanboys would be demanding their 12.99 back if they go under? I mean fan boys complain if there is a spec of dust under a screen. Apple knows it's customers and is not foolish. I have quit looking for it I figure if and when it is approved somebody will post it here I actually wouldnt be surprised at this point if apple rejects it. If they do approve it I am starting to think it will be well into March when it happens.

I don't see what all the hype is about. When I bought my iphone I wanted to make sure I could listen to my Sirius sub. I've had my iphone (switched from a winmo6 phone) since August 08, and have been able to listen all this time.
Using usirius and orb. I would have never purchased the iphone if I couldn't do it.

Umm lets see?
1. Not everyone has a jailbroken iPhone, with Firmware 1.1.4.
2. Not everyone has a PC hanging around that they can keep on 24/7 as a server.
So thats what all the hype is about.

I forgot to mention I had usirius on my winmo6 phone too (htc touch), but I wanted a phone I didn't have to reboot 3-5 times a day..... Which is why I switched to the iPhone.
Uh....am I supposed to care? I have a Blackberry too. Holy *****, three phones and only ONE is an iPhone. Christ, why haven't you lynched me yet?
Oh, and yes, I realize that Sirius going under doesn't mean they disappear but thank you for all the condescending sarcasm. Again. As usual. I'll be sure to tell all my Mac totin' friends to come here when they have any questions about language or syntax or if they need to call someone a douchebag and can't quite find the right words.

Looks like Sirius has been able to stave off bankruptcy for the time being at least. If that was really what was holding up the Apple approval of the Starplayr, it should no longer be an issue...
Liberty to Acquire SIRIUS XM Preferred Stock and Board Representation in Connection with Investments
NEW YORK and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sirius XM Radio Inc. (Nasdaq: SIRI) and Liberty Media Corporation (Nasdaq: LINTA, LINTB, LCAPA, LCAPB, LMDIA, LMDIB) today announced that they have entered into agreements pursuant to which Liberty will invest an aggregate of $530 million in the form of loans to SIRIUS XM and its subsidiaries and receive an equity interest in SIRIUS XM.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh...819/NYTU044LOGO )
Under the terms of the agreements, the investments will be funded in two separate phases.
-- The first phase includes a $280 million senior secured loan from Liberty to SIRIUS XM, $250 million of which will be funded today. The proceeds of that loan will be used by SIRIUS XM to repay $171.6 million of its maturing 2 1/2% Convertible Notes due February 17, 2009, and the balance will be used for general corporate purposes, including working capital and transaction costs. The loan will bear interest at a rate of 15%, mature in December 2012, and be secured by the assets securing SIRIUS XM's existing term credit agreement.
-- The second phase provides an additional loan of $150 million to XM Satellite Radio, SIRIUS XM's wholly owned subsidiary. Liberty has also agreed to offer to purchase up to $100 million of the loans outstanding under XM Satellite Radio's existing credit facilities from the lenders.
Upon completion of the second phase of the Liberty investments, SIRIUS XM will issue Liberty an aggregate of 12.5 million shares of preferred stock convertible into 40% of the common stock of SIRIUS XM. In addition, Liberty will receive seats on the SIRIUS XM Board of Directors proportionate to its equity ownership. It is expected that John Malone and Greg Maffei will join the SIRIUS XM Board of Directors. Liberty's obligation to consummate the second phase of its investment is subject to various closing conditions.
Mel Karmazin, Chief Executive Officer of SIRIUS XM Radio, said, "We are pleased to have come to this agreement with Liberty Media, particularly in light of today's challenging credit markets. Liberty's investment is an important validation of what SIRIUS XM has already achieved and a vote of confidence in what we will achieve. This agreement enables Sirius XM to continue to develop the opportunities first outlined in the merger of Sirius and XM. By strengthening our capital structure and enhancing our financial flexibility, this investment allows us to continue providing the great content and innovative programming our subscribers know and love."
"We are excited to be investing in SIRIUS XM. We have been impressed with the company, its operations and management team," said Greg Maffei, president and CEO of Liberty. "SIRIUS XM's ability to grow subscribers and revenue in a difficult financial and auto market is indicative of how listeners view this as a "must have" service."
The agreements, and the transactions contemplated by the agreements, do not constitute a change in control for SIRIUS XM under its outstanding debt instruments and are not subject to the approval of the Federal Communications Commission. The receipt by Liberty of voting stock is subject to expiration of the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act.
Important details of the agreements relating to this investment will be available on a Current Report on Form 8-K which SIRIUS XM expects to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Liberty has advised that its investment will be attributed to the Liberty Capital group and is not expected to affect the timing of the previously announced split-off of a portion of Liberty Entertainment.

I was very happy to end my subscription to XM a few days ago. I specifically cited this app as part of the reason...Not only do they want more money, they have removed stations I liked. More talk, less music, not as good bit rate, higher rate, and they want to charge for this app? And, the online channel list isn't as good. Hrmph.
I have Pandora on my iphone. Much preferred.

I'm just confused about why you cited this app and its price as a reason for canceling your subscription with Sirius XM?

Agreed. I have a feeling that some people are under the impression that this application is a Sirius|XM product...I have no idea why somebody would think that, but perhaps that's just me.
Is XM charging additional for their online feed too? Was it ever free?

I find it funny how when people cancel their Sirius/XM, they seem so angry about the entire concept of paying for radio, and they can't understand why others don't have a problem paying for it. They always seem really bitter, like jilted lovers.

No I think people are upset about paying MORE for something that for years has been free etc.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into an argument about why satellite radio is different than regular radio and you're not paying for the equivalent of something else that is free but instead paying for what some (mostly those who do pay for it) consider a premium service (similar to television when it was free and people thought it was crazy to pay for cable) though I'm sure the discussion will head that way.
If they're already subscribers, wouldn't they have accepted that when they initially signed up anyway?

Exactly. The level of bitterness is unreal. I've canceled services before because the price began to outweigh the benefits. But i don't recall being so snippy and angry about it.

I'm not yet ready to cancel, but I am close. Yes, the XM online used to be free, but now they are charging for it. That bothers me, but at least they are improving the quality of the streams. I still feel that this was the wrong time to increase online prices as I did have quite a few receivers and now in order to keep the online I will be canceling a few of those receivers. They can get my 2.99 a month but they are losing 6-8 dollars a month per radio that I am canceling, theres only so much you can have in this economy. The other concern I have is the amount of censorship they are putting on the programming. Some of the music on channels that shouldn't be censored is censored. On O&A, they are censoring the way they do their show, and many people signed up for this service to hear them completely uncensored. Back in '04 when they first came on the air, it was an extra 2 bucks a month, but they were completely commercial free and almost completely uncensored. Also, the DJ's talk wayyy too much on the music stations, it almost makes me want to turn the XM off and put on my iPod. Shut up and play the music! I don't care what you think about anything, i'm paying for commercial free and INTERRUPTION free music! This also now goes for the comedy station on 150 XM. This new douche "Mark Says Hi" (what the hell kind of a name is that??) talks way too much and is in no way funny. The corpse of George Carlin is a million times funnier than him, and he can't say anything! I prefer the comedy channels on AOL radio and the one on Slacker to the comedy channel on XM because they don't have a douche who thinks he is hilarious talking every 5 minutes. Also, what the hell is up with the constant radio ID's? I know what channel i'm listening to, its on the damn screen. Thats one of the reasons sat rad should be different from terrestrial, no need for radio id's because it's right there on the screen! If Howard Stern didn't require an outrageous contract for constantly taking vacation (he never works on Fridays and constantly takes off for weeks at a time), things might be better for Sirius XM and this bankruptcy scare might never have happened. Finally, get rid of Martha Stewart and Oprah; people watch them on TV and I doubt their respective audiences really listen to them on sat rad. Rant over.
