View Full Version : MBA envy? Have you experienced this?

I just bought my MBA two weeks ago during Christmas break. So Wed., first day back to law school with a new comp, first Mac, and I love it. This guy I know sits beside me, sees the Air, and starts asking about it, how I like the operating system, etc.
He then mentions the new Macbook Pro 17". This girl sitting beside me (who I've never seen a day in my life, let alone ever said a word to her) with a Voodoo or something starts talking about how the MBP has a removable battery, and then in the most condescending voice possible, says "I wouldn't WANT a computer without a removable battery, cd drive, and besides, MY computer is thinner than the Air."
Now, I'm pretty laid back, and non-assuming, and don't really brag. And despite beaming with joy over my Air, I wasn't going to bring it up to anyone unless asked, which I was by my friend. So it royally pissed me off that this girl I don't even know decides to simultaneously slant me and my lovely new toy while bragging about her ugly black windows piece of crap that, incidentally, is NOT thinner than the MBA.
Have any of you experienced anything like this? Can I expect more crap like this in the future from petty people or was this likely an isolated incident?

The Voodoo looked nice when they released it...Although it's always been more expensive than the air, and they haven't really updated. It has worse graphics, worse battery power, a similar processor, et cetera. I wouldn't get too worried about it. If it really bothers you that much, get some information and thrash her (non-aggressively) with information and facts. Anything more than that just makes you look like a tool.
Of course, I've experienced an envy of people who have Macbook Airs in the sense that I really want to buy this near-mint MBA for $850, but can't justify it :o

I usually try not to get to envious when something is smaller than mine, but in her case, I guess so.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It really really annoys me as well, you start to feel like your boiling up inside.
So depending upon who it is I generally just state the solid facts and then possibly give them a proper dressing down, not that I want to but sometimes its called for.
A guy on my course at Uni said Mac's cant right click, not cool, so I put him straight, not because I wanted to but because he is a c**k constantly, so wanted to put him in his place.
Other than that you just have to put up with it. The vast majority of people I come across are pretty computer ignorant. Just thank your lucky stars that you probably know a good bit more than them lol :)

If someone wants to be negative you all are wasting you time defending yourselves and your purchases. Dont give them that satisfaction. Let them be stuck with their plasticky crap, they will come around eventually. Or they wont!
My friends are not Mac people at all, one has a nice Thinkpad Tablet, one a monster Toshiba Quosimo and a couple crappy Inspirons. They teased me about being able to play cds and what not for a few days but they know how much I like the Air and have been pretty impressed with it.
I gave my old Rev A Air to my girlfriend and everyone in her lab (chemistry) is jealous of it! It is about 60% Macbooks and Macbook Pros there though.
The biggest things that seem to incite envy are the giant touchpad and the illuminated keyboard.

When I got my Air to my engineering school computer lab, all the sudden this girl that was setting on her BFs lap and I never even met said "oh, so you got a sexy laptop ha, is that the MBA?" I was  and  and the thing started the conversation lol :D but I had to leave her alone because I was extremely busy working on my project at the time.
I am sure that PC girl wanted to start a conversation with you just for your Air :p but she did not have a better way to do it

Awwww... don't get put down buddy!
Just think, you have such a beautiful machine in front of you. The people who stare at it are just jealous because they don't have one.
Don't let the nasty comments batter you down. They probably haven't experienced the wonderful qualities of the MBA yet.
Be proud of owning a MBA! ;)

Envy seems pretty attractive, but it also looks like they haven't updated the product in a while...
Who do they think they are? Apple with the Mac Minis?
MBAir is a far superior machine compared to the Envy133 so no worries :)

You should have asked her how much her lovely voodoo machine weighed. It just sounds like she is jealous.

Aren't you going to be a lawyer? Don't you know you have to defend your client... err... I mean, MB Air at any and all costs? ;)

To be quite honest, that is part of the reason it pissed me off; not only did I not know her, but she was pretty hot. Lol.
I do think I can tell the difference between condescension and flirting though, so if she would have had more of a coquettish smile instead of a smug look I think I would have received the comment much better. Lol.

Glad we're all thinking with our pants instead of our brains here. Not only have we reinforced the stereotype of the MBA user obsessed with his laptop, but we've reinforced the male "but is she hot?" stereotype too!

I would make every effort to sit beside her (that one) for every class, and search the internet, check your emails, while posting to this thread on MR, all done during class... LOL :D

Dunno if this was mentioned already, as I'm too lazy to read through this thread, but the VooDoo IS thinner than the MBA. MBA specs at .76 inches at its thickest, and VooDoo's Envy is .70 at its thickest. The average thickness of the MBA is less than that of the Envy, but she was correct in saying the Envy is thinner.

You don't need to say anything, just sit back and smile at the fact you get a amazing macbook air running OSX 10.5 and she gets stuck with cr***y windows.

Wow... the retail price of the SSD version of the Voodoo shocked me!
I'm not sure if you can get it discounted, but HP's online price was $2759.
For an SSD that's half the size, a CPU with 2mb less L2, slower FSB/RAM clock, craptacular Intel graphics, and b/g only WLAN, where's the infamous Apple Tax on this one?
The only thing I see that the Voodoo has that the MBA doesn't (that'd be meaningful to me)is a cardslot.
Also, it might be slightly thinner than the MBA's thickest point, but the tapered edges of give the impression of overall sleekness on the Air.
In spite of the MBA's obvious superiority in all possible ways, the answer of "who asked you?" would have probably sufficed!

All you have to do to see MBA envy is visit pages throughout this forum. There are countless posts telling people who love their MBA's why they shouldn't. My reply to them is work harder and maybe one day you can afford one too.

You should have called her out as a hater. Might make her feel bad and get a date.

Whatevs, be secure in your own choices and girls will be attracted to that ;) If you let stupid stuff like that bug you, other girls will pick up on that as insecurity!
Plus, MBA haters are basically the same people who cried when the iMac didn't have a floppy drive, or when the GUI replaced the CLI. Or the idiots who think the world has ended if someone else's computer doesn't have FireWire.
