looks like all the 'way to go' threads have gone away...
came back after a christmas break to find the i was in the top 20 #4 spot. cool! :) i would hope that i get pushed out of the top 20, but with that said, i'm not slowing down... we might actually catch some of the teams that passed us at this rate. :D
way to go to AggieFRL, SteveMoody, and mc68k.
super job to macbandit going over 1 million, sparky76 going over 2 million, and zim getting ready to kick it 3 million style.
and of the big numbers, the reason this matters, my 'completed work units hero' is PSI Floor&FiberCare with more than 44,000 units completed. points are nice, but WUs matter. very cool. keep it up!
happy 2009 and merry folding to all.
EDIT: WU List (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_list.php?s=&srt=5&t=3446) sorted by user. ignore #2 as it's a bogus DB entry.

good job to everyone!
hey sorry about being late to the party. it takes a lot of work to keep machines up and doing what they do.
back in the day when folding first started, they had work units that were only worth 5 points. now they have ones worth 1920 and 3840! big change in the power of workstations in that time

Thanks for the props. I'll probably continue to struggle to be in the top 20 unless I get another computer to use. I'm currently folding with a 2GHz Core2duo and a PS3. Hopefully in the next year. If I find a job. I'll have a new MacBook and a MacMini to add to the total.

i had this same problem, work units 'completing' but not sending. a restart of the unit results in the same thing. the only way i found to get it to behave is to delete and start over. sucks. ive prob lost 30K or more points this way recently

You running two units right?
so 230/240 pph total or just one unit with -smp 8? What is your MP09 though speed? 8 cores I assume?
Tks vm.
If this is with an 8 cores 2.66, I am buying one.

As far as I know it's running 2 SMP units (fah6) so yes, a total of 230-240 pph
This is on a dual quad 2.26 (InCrease "sees" 16 cpus)
I've run 2 units on a 09 single quad, but it there's not alot of processor room to do much else. It very usable with 1 unit working (I'd compare it to using 08 MP dual quad with 1 unit running)

I run FAH on a Macbook 2.16 and a Macbook Air 1.6 24/7.
They rarely crash but they both need to be on a laptop stand for good cooling, and in an air conditioned room. Of course, when running another CPU hungry program, it is not ideal. But I don't, only Folding.
The 2.66 8 core would be the best price/ratio for Folding.
Any idea what pph or ppd a 2008 2.8 was doing?

A 08 dual quad 2.8 is currently at (only running one client):
Average pph: 147.193, ppd: 3532.63, ppw: 24728.4, ppy: 1290259
A bit more than half 09 dual quad 2.26
I'll have to look at a 09 single quad tomorrow
Stay tuned ;)

I fold on a Core2Duo 2GHz MacBook about 20 hours a day with it sitting flat on a table with a hard plastic case on it. It primarily cools with the rear vent very little of the cooling is from the case itself. For your information I've been folding on this machine for about 2 and a half years non stop and have never had it crash from over heating or folding. Seems these days the only things that makes it crash is Safari 4 Beta.

So the 2.8 is faster with two clients? That might be a better buy then.

I would use the MP for some minor other things as well but Folding mostly ;)
it would take 6 Mac mini to match a 2.8 8 cores...
Also I hope to run the GPU eventually in Mac OS X or through WINE.
Just to be sure, you could run 2 units on the 2.8 MP and get double the points you indicated?

SMP units use 4 cores, so yes you could, but there will be little processor left to do anything else. You'd be OK web browsing, but if you plan on anything processor intensive you'd have to pause one or both units (IE: handbrake will use almost all of the 8 cores)
You can't pause for too long or you'll miss your deadline (which seem to be pretty tight on the SMP units)
I'm by no means an expert, you may want to wait for others to chime in. ;)

Tks.
I guess the Mhz myth is real then in the case of Folding.
I wouldn't say that, comparing clock to clock on the 09 MP slower clock = slower folding (when equal # of cores are compared)
The claim that 09 MP are quicker at a slower clock is shown (proven?) with the numbers I provided earlier
Anyone would want to chime on hyperthreading?
What if you run 3 or 4 units on the 09MP...
I wouldn't see why not, increase "sees" 16 cpus on the 09 2.26 dual quad. SMTs only use 4 cores per unit, so I'm sure you could run four units, but don't expect to do much else. (kinda like running 2 units on the hyper threaded single quad, increase "sees" 8 cpus)

You should be able to still use the computer. The priority for folding using Increase should be Nice +20. On my MacBook it runs as if on 4 cores and I can still do whatever I want to do it just means that folding will slow down dramatically. Performance of other tasks are slowed a very tiny bit.

Agreed.... I was talking more intensive stuff (video encoding etc) but the more you "pile on" the slower everything gets.
There are times when I have to pause folding to get something else done (in a reasonable amount of time)

My rig will be here tomorrow.
I think you just need to run one instance only and run "fah6 -smp 8 -bigadv". For 2009 Mac Pro use "-smp 15" instead of 8 and make sure HyperThreading is on (it is by default I think).
Make sure you accept big WU in the config (pretty sure you do already for SMP Folding), and you can delete the core to get the new 2.11 version (might do it by itself anyway).
I would not run it on the quad 2.66 but the other two should work, your PPD is going to skyrocket.
Last you need to activate the passkey, which you might already have (I did a long time ago somehow).

You also need to replace the fah6 executable file by this one
http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/folding/osx/fah6
you need to download it by right clicking and change the name to fah6, you also might make the file executable (I didn't have to).
43 mins for the first frame, I was expecting 40 mins or better so not great...
Still, 3 days turn-around, should be 16.5k PPD with the 100% bonus, 20k total PPD with the other computers, enough to claim the #1 cruncher spot until Lyzardking turn on the big guns.

First bigadv unit is done. 41.5 mins per frame, 2.05 faster than deadline resulted in 51.6k points thus 17.6k PPD. Not bad eh...
It looks like the Harpertown and Nehalem can do better per Ghz...

Almost 3 days to complete? (if my math is right)
I might have to try this out.....
Question: You had a past problem with a unit not restarting, right? I fear that's why I loose a unit every so often (not being taken down "nicely")

2.9 days.
Had another power outage and the unit resumed this time.
To be honest I don't think there is any difference between these units and other SMP units as far as loosing when restarting. I have had back luck with that, less than 50% resume when stopped for any reason. This might actually is my biggest gripe with Folding... The second is not having a GPU client for macs, hopefully OpenCL will change that.
Go ahead with these big units, really worth it.

Should take more like 2.5 days then with these time frames, 29k bonus so 54k ish for the unit resulting in 21.5k PPD. Great. These Core i7 are fast 4 cores...
My router crashed when my last unit was at 89% and reset all my Folding units on all machines (this is really a stupid bug from Folding).

Well I used this lost WU to put the machine on a 1250VA UPS and add a 2TB eSata backup drive... This is only the second time in two years the Airport Router crashes but annoying it takes my WU down on all my machines.
Looks like I could overclock the machine 10-15% for a potential 20-30% increase in PPD but the clock might be messed up.
The 2.93Ghz Nehalem can do the unit in 1.5 days for a 44k PPD... Too bad the config I need would cost $7k. The 2.6Ghz takes two days for $30k PPD... If only Apple had kept the old price points on the Mac Pros...

considering those are worth 25K points w/o bonus 10 frames is like 2500 points down the drain. i developed another strategy, making a copy of the entire folder beforehand. i successfully transferred the work unit to another faster mac pro and started it up at 5 frames. well, maybe faster it's a 2,1 at 2x3ghz and the other was a 3,1 2x2.8GHz. most of the people at work here that have mac pros are scientists that actually use them to crunch data.
at least this way if something goes wrong i could submit it from another computer

I had my G5 doing big units but I wasn't getting very many points for them so it's getting reformatted (was going to do that anyway since I have a Mac Pro now) and I will start over with it. Mac pro is doing well on SL but no open GL:( I have 8 machines now: 4 with slow AMD cpu's and Lunux, 1 with a faster AMD cpu, G5 1.6, Mac Pro '09 2x2.6 with SL and a new i7 with the 920 cpu and Linux I got an Nvidia gtx 960 hopeing gpu support might come along sometime but may have to go to wInDoWs to use the gpu:mad:

i don't know. the bigadv units will get you big points, but i'm not so sure i like doing them that much. i mean, if anything goes wrong in 3 days, you lose all that work. and i've had my system freeze up twice while doing them and still trying to use the machine at the same time.
sorry to hear that you are still having problems though.

So far so good though I should have gotten a cheap graphics card since I can't really use this effectively with linux, can't get any drivers for it:( I have an AMD Phenom 9600 x4 that seems to be doing better than the i7 920 but I haven't done any tweeking or oc to see if I can get more out of it yet.

wow. an interesting setup you got there. i see the fan near, but you aren't too concerned with dust and stuff?
also, you are right with the gpu and linux. even though it is possible thru wine, it's not easy. my advice: either run windows, do the gpu folding and linux folding thru a VM, or run linux and do the bigadv units.
