View Full Version : how did you come up with your screen name???

mr.w
Jun 12, 2002, 12:25 AM
I've seen a lot of interesting screen names out there and was wondering how you all thought of them, or what they mean to you??? I also wanted to be the first person to post on what has the potential to be the longest thread in MacRumors history :) ... If we got every member to contribute to this thread we would have 5000+
(wow... that would be ssswwweeeeeeeeetttt)

I'll go first... mine is easy, my last name starts with a "W," (imagine that) I wasn't feeling very creative at the time I signed up so that's what i came up with.

Whose next???????????????????/

Mine is the first letter of my first name and my last name. We had a thread like this several times before, it will get completly off-topic by 20 posts anyway.

Mine is derived from a... how shall I say... UNIQUE collecting hobby. :D

www.insulators.com about says it all... heh.

Hemingray was a company that made insulators back in the 1800's and 1900's.

My friends Bob and Shaun also collect them, and have their own web sites: www.hemingray.com and www.hemingray.net , respectively. I have www.hemingray.info, and Bill, the owner of www.insulators.com has www.hemingray.org. Nuts eh? Heheh.

The Bender
Jun 12, 2002, 05:26 AM
Back in the autumn of 1990 I was strutting my funky stuff on the dance floor of an alternative disco at Birmingham Uni, and someone sitting at a table saíd:

Wow, look at Andy - he's so... BENDY!

From that moment I became Bendy Andy (or just Bendy), which is what many people still know me as. Around 1994, one of my housemates morphed it into The Bender, which sounds better as a screen name. Used it for plenty stuff online since. It was only lasy year that I heard there was a cartoon character named after me. I thought about taking legal action, but... what the hell.

Hypatia
Jun 12, 2002, 07:19 AM
I was in a hurry and the only thing I could think of that I would be likely to remember in future was Hypatia.
Hypatia was a scholar and the last librarian at the great library in Alexandria thousands of years ago. This library was the most complete and famous collection of every known book and mathematical text in the anicient world.

She was stoned to death trying to protect the library from the invading Christian hoards who killed everyone and burnt it to the ground because they decided it was blasphemous.

Any subtext involving Mac believers in a wintel world is entirely intentional but I hope this time it ends better.

Please don't nick it because I really like it.

I used to go by the name of sissystarstar for all email and online stuff... but ended up getting fed up with people asking me WTF sissystarstar meant....... :p

so I changed it to iGav last year........... i = internet, or idiot or ignoramous etc... and Gav = my name... simplicity perfected...... :D

However I use the name BINKY the dancing clown on hotline etc..... but I'm not going into why I use that name..... :p

Dukestreet is the name of the street I used to live on, pretty simple.

You might want to get your story straight, Hypatia. Muslims burnt the Library down in 640 or so.

Hypatia was dealt a different fate.

Well, i suppose everybody knows the Fraggles? Those hairy things (when I get my 500 posts, I will make a Fraggle-avatar ;)).

In Dutch they're called 'Freggels'. And so I made Freggle, a combination of both, making me sort of unique *hum hum*

Now, this has been my screen name for quite a long time. All the students on the newsgroups in Leuven know me as Freggle.

On Mac-sites however, I like to add a 'Mc' before it. Mc for Mac of course...

That's the whole deal.

Oh yeah, and the little k. on the bottom of each post is just my first name, Karel. It's a habit...

The name comes from an AD&D Planescape chr. my brother once made. Half humand half demon (betazu I think). Anyhoo when I started playing DI on bnet I nicked the name for my fighter, and have used it for online stuff ever since.

though sometimes shortened...

edit:
Technicly the name was originally just Sinforge, I added the Lord part for bnet

Hypatia

Hmm.
Having checked out your url as no one likes wavy facts, and done a bit of googling it seems there is some considerable confusion on the point.
Socrates Scholasticus, whom you quote, apparently lived some centuries after the fact so I suppose finding out who his sources were and tracking back would be the thing.

I am pretty certain I read the Hypatia story in Brewers Phrase and fable but I can't find it to check.
Hypatia's story seems to vary a lot from source to source both ancient and contemporary and the library thing may have got confused with another Alexandrian institution apparently called the museum with which she was involved according to some sources.
She is however credited in a number of web sites and other places as the last librarian at Alexandria even if this is not factually correct as far as anyone knows.

It doesn't look as if anyone knows for sure, I may look into it some more later, it's rather interesting.

Hypatia Lee. She was a native american porn star in the late 70's early 80's. Sorry Hypatia, but I had to say it. I do like the more educate cause that you chose it though.

I see no reason why there can't be a porn star named Hypatia although I have to admit if I had known that earlier (my mispent youth didn't involve much porn because I either fall about laughing, fall asleep or it totally puts me off sex for months) I might have thought twice about it in case people got confused.
It's a great name.

It is said you can work out your porn star name by combining the name of your first pet with your mothers maiden name.
Mine works out at Champagne Browne which I think is quite good.

Incidentally Bactothemac, in your capacity as Jedi Master of Intel do you have any idea how to stop Windows 98 and 2000 Hardware wizard launching automatically when it detects a device for which it doesn't have a driver?
I am trying to connect a Psion to an iMac via Virtual PC 5 and a Keyspan adapter which should be theoretically possible but it all goes fruitshaped when the wretched Hardware Wizard launches and messes up the settings blocking the link.
I can't find any way to disable the thing.
Any ideas?

Thanks.

There are some great names coming to the fore on this topic.

Actually, there is a supported list of USB devices on Connectix's site. Anything that is not supported will not work. There is a way to disable the autodetect feature, but in most systems it is in bios. Disable plug-n-play. That should help. Other than that, have the drivers downloaded, or the CD for install.

Mr. Anderson
Jun 12, 2002, 09:25 PM
we went from porn star names to autodetecting USB devices in VPC in 2 posts? how is this possible.....

keeping with the thread - so hypatia, you are female, correct? there are only a few who admit to being other than male - except eye who's picture is confusing everybody, even himself - its great to see more women on the threads.

I think there is no doubt that the burning of the Great Library in Alexandria occured at the hands of the Muslims, but it also had earlier problems. There is no definitive source on the history of the Library, most/all of it was burnt, but historical record survives in several places (Rome). And there is a possibility that Hypatia had something to do with the earlier problems of the Library. If you ever find out, pm me, I'd love to know.

Almost all online stores and web email accounts use the "what's you're mother's maiden name ?" or "what's your pet's name ?" question if you lose you're password. Saying that, you can't buy anything on any of the stores I use without entering an account number and postcode/zip. maybe I'm just being paranoid.

As for my name, It's what I call my dog when he's continually knocking my hands off my keyboard so I'll give him biscuits or whatever I'm eating while I'm at my desk, or when he's knocking all the stuff off my bedroom windowsill 'cos he's seen a cat or something.

Thanks very much Backtothemac.

The adapter is listed on Connectix's site I checked before I bought it but their support is pretty much non existant.
Installing the driver into the pc loaded on VPC doesn't work at all, it was the first thing I tried but Windows couldn't see the adapter no matter what I did.
VPC can see the adapter fine when the driver is installed on the Mac until the Wizard launches and blocks it somehow.
I will try disabling the plug and play, erm, where is it? (Mac paduan, little wintel.)
A friend has already mentioned the bios thing and is buying drinks for someone who might know how to do it but it looks complicated.

Cheers.

Dear Dukestreet,

Sorry about the off topic with the USB VPC thing but Backtothemac would describe himself as Jedi Master of Intel so I couldn't pass it up as this Psion thing is really bugging me. It should work.

Back on topic. The whole Hypatia story looks really interesting and so does the 4th century historian you found, I would like to look into it some more when I have got the Psion going and I'll let you know if I find anything definative or just really entertaining.

Perhaps you have more women on the threads than you think as some people do prefer to keep it quite as I do sometimes myself on a board where my e-mail address might be generally available.
It's a thing.

Oh, I have no doubt there are more women on the board than acknowledge it. That's why I was congratulating you on actually stepping forward.

If I find anything more myself, I'll let you know. And I wasn't worried about the off topic issue, I just thought the comparison was funny - especially in how fast in happened.

I used to be really interested in sharks, and they fit my tendency in these forums to lurk quietly in the shadows.

However, I wanted something a little different and unique than "shark" so I took the first two letters of my last name, "sz" -- which are pronounced with an "sh" sound -- and stuck them at the beginning instead.

To get back to the earlier off-topic subject, what's wrong with admitting to being female? We've had quite a few people come out, with no noticeable prejudice being voiced, so being female shouldn't be hard to admit :)

I went back just to check, but not a single female posted their picture in the '...and their users' thread (apart from b2tm, who posted one of his lovely wife and daughter). Why was that i wonder?
