Which Mac do you have? First you'll need the necessary adapter for your model.

Yes, a miniDVI to VGA adapter will work. (If that's the type of Monitor you have)

Once the Mac is hooked up to an external keyboard and monitor, it will not sleep after closing.

its not the brand new gen ones. But is the one right before it. Or how would i find out exactly? im still new to mac's. And yes my monitor is both vga/dvi but i think i'll use the dvi for the mac.

You have a miniDVI port then. And if you want to use DVI, you'll just need the MiniDVI-DVI adapter and a DVI cable to the monitor.

Connect the mac to external screen---->close the lid...--> wait---> press buttons on external keyboard, to wake it from sleep! then only the extrnal monitor gets powerd, until you unplugg it again :apple::apple::apple:

Ok so you have a port like this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4f/Kobushi-mini-dvi.jpg

If your Monitor has a plug like this:
http://z.about.com/d/hometheater/1/7/G/9/vga2.JPG
You will need this:
Mini-DVI to VGA M9320G/A (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A)
http://img.systemaxdev.com/productmedia/htmlimages/cten/Apple/Q58359-2.jpg
And be careful to not buy the one for the iBook I did that by mistake.

However if your Monitor plug looks like this:

You'll need this:
Mini-DVI to VGA M9321G/B (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B)

Thanks for this thread. My brother got the new Aluminum Macbook recently (the 2.4ghz) and is coming from a PC where he was addicted to Counter Strike. He plays some older version and needs the higher refresh rate so he wants to keep using our old Dell Trinitron CRT monitor. I think it's a Dell P780. So from this thread, seems all we need to order is this:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A

(as qacjared posted).

Other than that, I should be good to go, right?

No, not that one.

You need the Mini-Display Port one.

If I understand you correctly you have either a white or black macbook. All plastic macbooks have a mini-dvi port, thus the link Rizvi1 gave earlier is correct:
You'll need this:
Mini-DVI to VGA M9321G/B (http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B)

I think acfusion29 probably thought you had an aluminium one.

Which one is that? Looking at the picture above in this thread, I thought the one I picked was the right one to go with, the http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A

The VGA connection looks like that one (I'm pretty sure)

Yes, but the connector to the Mac has to be Mini DisplayPort:

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MjE0ODQ2NQ

That's the one you will need. The other one is for the older MacBook's (pre Alu.)

Thank you, I'm glad I confirmed before buying. Is Apple the only place to get this? anywhere else cheaper? $29.99 is a bit pricey.

eBay if you wanna wait, and since it's fairly new it won't be that much of a deal.

guess I'll just suck it up and pay the $29 to get it from Apple. :(

But at least my brother can play his game with his full refresh rate or whatever he needs the CRT for :o. Maybe this will help me go to heaven.

No, my brother does have an aluminum one - from the receipt e-mailed to me, MB 13.3/2.4/2X1GB/250/SD/BL-KB-USA / MB467LL/A for $1,499.00. bought 10/21/2008
