View Full Version : iMac Video choppy, stuttering?

Any help with this? I'm just watching videos on Youtube in HD, and Hulu. I'm even noticing when I'm typing quickly the computer lags behind at times and almost stutters. My iMac is 2.4 ghz with 4 mb of ram and I haven't had this problem before.

Have you checked activity monitor to find out your CPU/RAM usage? If it was just the videos I would say maybe it's your internet connection, as mine lags when trying to watch any Hulu video higher than standard definition, but if it's lagging when you're typing as well then maybe other programs are using either too much CPU or RAM.

I have two processes called "ditto" that are fluctuating between high 80's-low 90's of cpu? From what I have read online it can be related to copying files and doing backups..but I'm not doing either and don't have time machine activated currently. I did try to open a zip file earlier and my computer wouldn't open it, but I have since restarted. Any ideas?

Ok, I restarted again, and the ditto processes are gone. For future reference, what should I look for in activity monitor that would also help me to id these problems?

I'm not sure if this will help the video problem, so far it seems ok, definitely better than before. Is there anything else I can check? Does the ditto process get hung up sometimes?

Have you tried cleaning caches / permissions etc. with Onyx?

Flash Video via the Flash Plugin will stress the Mac as Adobe can't seem to write a decent plugin for the Mac. This is a well documented issue and while it may not be the root cause of your issue, it certainly will be a contributing factor towards it.

I believe Apple are holding Adobe to ransom to get them to start writing decent efficient code again for the Mac, specifically for the iPhone.

It's a couple days later and I'm still having this problem. I don't know what's going on, I just notice that when I try to watch video files or even play saved video files at times, they are choppy. Sometimes I still get the keyboard lag too. I don't have the previous issue with the ditto process taking up too much CPU either..

onyx is an app you would have to download and it will run maintinence tasks clear cache and such. In disk utility you can run "repair permissions" on your hard drive...

Ive done all these things and still have this issue. I get lag in typing in Firefox, and lag in youtube videos. I don't understand it. Even typing this post I'm getting lag.

Again, CPU usage is not the issue, I've repaired permissions, reset the PRAM....i just don't understand this.

I've got an iMac with 2.4Ghz and 2GB of RAM. Had the same problem while running mini displayport to HDMI. I switched from 1080p to 1080i and that seems to have resolved the problem.

I had similar issues on my MBP a few months ago, turned out the HDD was on its way out. I was getting CRC errors. Check the logs via Console for any errors. I would also run diagnostic on the HDD and check the S.M.A.R.T status (Onyx).
