Macbook overheating with Safari

Lately my year old macbook has been getting very hot when I watch videos on Safari. If I pause the video it cools down fairly quickly but this never used to happen. I looked at the CPU usage using Activity Monitor while this was happening and Safari was consistently around 100. Also, when I am on the dashboard CPU usage of inoRT jumps to over 150%. This does not seem normal.

Update to the newest version of Safari (or maybe if there is a Java update), or just do the quick fix and try it out in FireFox.

You could try running it in a new user to see if the same thing happens, and ultimately my favorite software fix-all, backup, format, fresh install!

It depends. Where or what program where you using to watch videos. Flash uses a lot of CPU power in a Mac compared to Wincrap.

I have the newest Safari (3.2.1) and I also tried using Firefox, same thing happened. How do I check to see if I have the newest Java version? (I'm usually pretty good about getting new software updates.)

I just updated Java but that doesn't seem to help either.

Does anyone know why InoRT is suddenly taking so much of the CPU, but only when I open the dashboard?

Try using camino http://caminobrowser.org/, if that doesn't solve the issue, try reinstalling Os X, update straight ahead to 10.5.6 and safari to the latest version.

And if that doesn't work either, give the local apple store a call and make an appointment for a genius, maybe it's a hardware related problem! ;)

This sounds pretty normal to me.

Flash Player on Mac OS X is incredibly inefficient.

Most online Video sites (including YouTube) use Flash.

The CPU usage you report is not unusual in any way (nor is the associated fan noise).

I'd go get Flash 10 (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)

This is my MacBook (in sig) playing a random YouTube video with Flash 10.

The usage is pretty high, but certainly not the highest I've seen.

Ok, thank you. I was hoping not to reinstall everything. I just had never noticed my macbook heating up like that before.
