Just set up an account using 'other', enter your email and password and it should work. I downloaded all my messages and am not paying for a thing.
Microsoft are finally allowing pop access I guess.
Try it.

didn't work for me. do you need to manually setup server addresses etc?
default on mine says pop3.live.com, but it gives a error saying user name or password is incorrect.

I just tried my iPhone as well. I guess you could say it works, but not in the way most would think.
Here's what it said...
"A Windows live Hotmail Plus subscription is reuired to use Hotmail accounts with Mail. Visit get.live.com/mailplus/features for details. You can also access you Hotmail account on the web at mail.live.com"
So in other words, if you have a Hotmail Plus subscription, it will work on the Mail app.
Edit: After that notification shows up, you are able to press the "Next" button, which then adds the Hotmail account anyways. A disclamer then shows up saying that this Mail account may not be able to Send or Receive emails, but trying to send and receive mail proves it working. I got every piece of mail I sent and received!

i tried the approach register hotmail as others but it gives me an error message that pop mail is not supported for hotmail.
if u want true blue hotmail access without paying for a premium hotmail account,
the best bet will be mboxmail -cost 9.99 at

I find it weird that it told me that I couldn't use this account with a Hotmail Plus subscription, yet it still works fine, even though I don't have hotmail Plus.
...Maybe when you set the Hotmail up on your Mail app, Hotmail automatically puts you on a Hotmail Plus trial?

When you've added your email address and password just click 'next' when it says that you have to have a hotmail plus subscription.
They'll probably cut it off but it's pretty cool.

Most likely, but it will be cool while it lasts!

It's been expected that Microsoft will launch POP access for free Hotmail for a while. There was an article from somewhere that said it would launch sometime this year.

Even after I set it up I get a message that says "The user name or password for "xxxxx@live.com" is incorrect."
And I know it's right.
Hotmail + mail.app = epic fail!

Here's what worked for me, for anyone who's interested!
Be sure to enter your name as entered in your Hotmail account. (ie. when you log into Hotmail it says, "Hi ------")
Be sure to put "Hotmail" in the description
Make sure your address and password are correct.
This is just what worked for me. My fiancé just did it with her ipod touch too with the same things.

After going through the process it states that my username or password is incorrect. I tried it on my computer and could log in but on iPod I get that message and have tried it about 3 times.

It worked for me. Added a new Account in settings, got the not supported message, hit next and it was set up. Now my ipod is full of hotmail e-mails. I don't have a plus account, it is a hotmail from at least 14 years ago. It had populated the discription with my e-mail address, I edited that after it was set up, to Hotmail.

Hmm... I too got the not supported message. Then I went into my mail and the account was there but every time it went to retrieve the mail it said there was something wrong with my account like a password/username issue. That is not the case because when I login on the computer nothing like that happens and the information I put in is the same.

Will post link shortly, http://gallery.me.com/pdegeer/100171 done. Only leaving this up for a couple of days, then pulling them.
Only thing bugging me, is that my folders are not there, but I can suffer through that.

You know, since I added it yesterday, haven't checked the actual account, will do that now....all the messages are still in my inbox, even though I deleted them via the touch. Is this what should be happening with this type of e-mail account via the touch?

In the Mail Apps setting you can set up Hotmail to delete the server's copy of the mail once you've deleted it off your iPod/iPhone.
Hotmail seems a little slow still, but if you set that setting to delete the server copy, it will eventually remove the copy from your inbox on the Hotmail website.
That's what I have setup and it works great!
No more logging into hotmail.com!!

If you set up the Hotmail account like shown, it will automatically configure your account to smtp.live.com. but again, you should never have to enter that manually.

Another thing I thought about that will definitely work for everyone.
on hotmail.com you can go into your setting and set up your email to automatically forward to another email.
Simply forward your Hotmail email to the email that is setup on your iPod touch/iPhone and you will have your Hotmail emails sent to your iPod/iPhone.
Since I have MobileMe, that's what I decided to do. I also told Hotmail to delete the original mail from the hotmail server after forwarding the email to MobileMe. So technically, my Hotmail is managed under MobileMe now too!

I just switched to Gmail about a month ago. I was tired of people not receiving my emails until 12 hours after I sent them and I was tired of not being able to access my email easily through any mobile device. If they want to drop the ball and not access services for free that almost every other free email service offers then they will start to lose customers. Gmail works great and I've never once regretted the switch

I second this. It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm a transient student, and unfortunately, one of my colleges uses a live.com based email.. and it's absolutely infuriating. I can't stand live.com, hotmail, or any of the other ones. They make you pay for a service that should be free. That's B.S.

usually you have to pay like $20 a month but some people seem to be able to get it for free without paying a thing. Awesome. I'm from Australia and it is perfect.

It works only in these Countries for now:
UK, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
If you are somewhere else:
Just go to - Options - More Options - View and Edit your personal information
Then change your country.

I'm afraid not. Apparently, Hotmail uses the POP3 protocol where messages are only downloaded, as opposed to IMAP or other protocols where the mail app and the server communicate changes.

No.

see way above.
I have 2xyahoo, hotmail, .me and gmail all e-mail accounts on my ipod.
Hotmail is my oldest, and someday I will make the effort to switch eveything over, but for now at least I have a way of deleting e-mails and not have a pop up on my comptuer telling me that I have 397 e-mails in my hotmail in box, thank god no more guilt over the negelected hotmail inbox. G-mail is meant to be my throw away account to replace hotmail, someday....

(twice) i just did that and i got my emails and i sent one to another email account of mine and it worked.

As of the 14th of January, Hotmail POP3 is available free in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands with more countries to come soon. The Windows Live blog specifically mentions using this on the iPhone. (http://windowslivewire.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!2F7EB29B42641D59!32413.entry)
But I still recommend migrating to Gmail sooner than later...much better features now instead of "sometime in the future"

For those that are getting an error when setting up their hotmail information
1. You enter your name as entered in your Hotmail account, i.e., when you log into Hotmail it says Hi <Name>.
2. Make sure to leave the description field unchanged it should be something like email@hotmail.com. After the account information is retrieved you can then go back and change the description to whatever you want.
Just tried this in two iPhones and it works. Weird thing is that if I omit step two above I get a message saying password not recognized.
Hope this helps.
