Just bought a new macbook 13 inch, and now have a cracked up screen..

i just purchased a new macbook aluminum and long story short my sister knocked a huge dent into the top surface of the macbook which led to an impact on the LED, the cracks start from the left side and go every which way all the way across the screen. thankfully nothing else on the macbook was damaged and it appears to be purely a cosmetic fix. the display suprisingly shows everything perfectly, it just looks as if im staring at it through a cracked window.

i bring the laptop to the apple store, not expecting a free fix, but to see what i can do and they were completely baffled, it was the first time they had seen it happen and the guy said i could either basically pay the price of the macbook to get it fixed, or find a glass specialist to replace the outside, but what kind of glass specialist works on laptops?? seemed out of the question.

i discovered http://www.macservice.com/ who can replace the entire display with new parts, with warranties, ect.. but it still seems a little steep in price being $795 bucks!


So now im debating between just getting a new top half of a laptop basicly for $795, or just hooking the laptop up to a cheap LCD desk display and wait for apple to get their heads out of there ass's and figure out a reasonable way to fix all these broken LED's that are gonna keep popping up, for a reasonable price.

i know not the first to have this problem, but i think its important to continue to address it

so what do you guys think? maybe there's a better solution..

i would buy a 30 inch mac display and run the latop off it hehe. ok maybe 24 the 30 is hella expensive

the fact is that the LED's are going to break much easier than the LCD's, and as of now the uni-body doesn't make any screen fix cheap. its less than half the price to replace any of the previous macbook displays compared to the new one.

Yeah, just have your sister pay a good amount of the $795.

Is portability an issue for you? Otherwise just hook it up to an external monitor.

Here is the BEST solution, don't have your laptop kicked and keep it out of the way of peoples feet. It's not Apples fault and why should they address it? It's a different story if you were working on it and doing stuff and the glass just broke, but this isn't the case.

Lol the unibody still has a LCD screen just that the backlight is LED instead of CCFL. If anything the CCFL would be easier to break.

For $795 spend a little extra and get the 24" ACD

The LED's are the backlight. They have nothing to do with the screen (the LCD) breaking anymore than a normal CCFL backlight system would.

Also, according to your OP, the screen itself isn't broken, but the glass over-cover that we have.

Basically, get rid of the glass and have matt.

Now you should thank Apple. Without the glass as the extra protection, the screen would probably be shuttered and it would really be a $800 job.

You should have bought accidental insurance on your macbook. It's about 130/yr for $1300 coverage. Goto www.safeware.com.

Theoretically, you could buy the insurance now and then wait about a month and file a claim on your damaged laptop....theoretically and illegally.

Call your home insurance company and your credit card company. Some credit cards have accidental insurance automatically, so you may be covered under them.

Home insurance - you will have to pay a deductible, but it should be less than $800 (hopefully). I wouldn't count on Apple's prices dropping... I dented my screen as well, and the internal cost to Apple for a new LED screen is over $600.
