I could understand for people who bought a new Mac before the annoucement, but I think it should be a free upgrade for anybody who is buying between MacWorld & when iLife 09 ships. Just my two cents.

I gather the fee would be to cover mail costs. Which is weird, considering it apparently costs Apple $17 to post a CD in Australia, which it would actually cost them about $8 (AUD)... that's $9 worth of handling! :D

I bought it a little earlier, right after the announcement because I really needed it soon. I'm pissed they don't allow for those customers to get a 10$ upgrade and like others already said, give it away for free on new machines.

No matter what the cut off date is someone bought it just before that = always someone to complain.

You never win in technology pricing. There's always something faster, if not cheaper, right around the corner.

Are you really surprised? This IS Apple we're talking about. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't some "up-to-date" things from Apple in the past free?

Sort of reading between the lines a bit, but does that mean new iMacs and/or minis around late March when this program finishes and all macs ship with iLife '09?

iLife '09 is supposed to be shipping at the end of this month. However, the late march date could very well be for resellers who will be stuck with computers which only have iLife '08 installed. This gives them time to sell the Macs they have in stock.

Or, as you say, it could mean we have to wait until the end of march for new Mac minis. Which is still better news than "no more Mac minis, get a MacBook or iMac".

I agree. I understand mailing costs and so forth, but if they're promising it it should not cost extra.

One other amendment is I suppose for Macs purchased now it's one thing, but certainly after iLife is actually released it should be free, because at that point it's just luck of the draw whether it's preinstalled.

Once iLife 09 comes out all Apple resellers (at least Apple Stores and Best Buy) will get what called a flat pack of iLife and a bunch of Apple approved seals. Someone from Apple will then come in and open up every computer box and insert the iLife disk in it and reseal it. Problem is that Apple wont send more than a certain amount and if there are already computers in transit or if someone bought a computer before the flat pack arrived then those machines would get stuck without iLife 09 (at least at best buy that happened with iLife 08). If the machine ends up without iLife 09 we usually just throw in a retail copy for the customer as its supposed to be part of the package

That's a rip. Should be FREE after they announced it. 9.95 for those that bought 60 days ago maybe...They are dropping 2000 bucks on a machine, give it to them. This years upgrade is minimal anyways.

Man I remember back in the day when Apple was great about their Up to Date program like Final Cut and such. It encouraged people to buy ahead of time.

That sucks... It should be like the iphone rebate. Since they dropped the price right after and really pissed everybody off. It should be like $20(I'd pay 20, 30 for it, but not 80) for people who have just recently bought a new mac.

LIKE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess this is just another way for Apple to make EVEN more MONEY. iLife08 was total Bull **** any ways... Give me 09 to make up for it.

Didn't realize that happened. That's a fair and reasonable approach. No one buying a new mac after iLife is released should have to pay . . . before that? Not so concerned.

Just an FYI, last year when they had this program for ilife '08, a bunch of people who were technically not within the upgrade window were nonetheless able to qualify for this deal. It couldn't hurt to plug in your serial number.

Also, I do recall a bunch of users calling Apple directly to plead their case and with the right CR, they were able to get their software for either $9.99 or for free.

Good luck

I don't understand why there isn't an "upgrade" price on this software to begin with. I know they call the $80 an "upgrade", but paying $80 a year for such incremental steps is too high.

I'd get every year of iLife if it was 40 bucks.

It has to be from Apple or an authorised retailer. But I just entered that I bought mine on 7th Jan when I bought it on 1st Dec really and it's let me go ahead with it.

When I spoke with an Apple on-line specialist, she said the iLife '09 update would be down-loadable so unless she was incorrect, the $10 would not be to cover postage.

You're brother's computer DOES qualify for the up to date program. ANY computer bought on day of Macworld Keynote qualifys for the up to date program.

Also, up to date is actually free. the fee is to cover the shipping and handling.

I bought mine during Summer this year, and at the same time, I also bought iWork 08, not knowing that in few months it was obsolete. But I got the full iWork 09 at my college bookstore for only $59, and this will be the same price for iLife 09.

I logged in on a different account to which my MacBook order invoice was on. I placed the order on my Dad's account, I attempted to redeem the $10 upgrade on my account, it let me order it, and I had a shipping date of 2 Feb. I cancelled it however.

Well, it says that if you do it by post or fax, not by web. This is what I don't understand, I hadn't placed the order for my MacBook on the account with which I redeemed the upgrade. I'm not sure if they would check it up or not because I got a shipping date and all that. I cancelled my order though.

They should make the iLife 09 update free retroactive back 30 days rather than charge a "nominal" fee.

It's the principal that you are being taken care of and not being nickel and dimed.

The update is a download and is not a mailing.

As a potential customer, I am not impressed.

1) Media, packaging, and postage cost $. Apple is giving recent buyers the iLife content for free. Why should Apple also bear the cost of shipping and handling? Honestly, they don't have to even offer a program like this. Can the entitled attitude.

2) It was no secret iLife 09 was going to be announced a MW. If it was that huge of a deal breaker for one to save $10 he/she should have waited a month.

3) Apple has offered this same program since iLife 2.0 so the "fee" should come as a shocker to no one... except maybe a nube.

4) iLife '09 is too large to put on line. It's a few GBs! That would cost Apple a bundle in bandwidth and server costs.

5) And this is the most important thing so pay attention: if $10 is the stated barrier to anyone not buying an Mac I'm guessing they have no real plans to buy one anyway. I've been plenty annoyed at some of Apple's true nickle and diming schemes in the past but in the end it hasn't caused me to hold back on a purchase or go to the dark side.

Thank god finally some reasoning. It's sad that everyone expects everything for free.

I have no problem paying $10, even $20, heck I was planning on dishing out the $80 when it started shipping. Supporting the development efforts of software only makes them better. I'm just thankful that Apple even considered offering the $10 'up-to-date' charge, they didn't have to.

And anyone who didn't wait until the keynote to make your order (unless you had an exceptional reason) should have just showed a little more restraint.

Thank you! I could not agree more. I bought my MacBook on Sunday from Best Buy - no one there knew anything about the update (not surprised) so I did not bother to hassle them for a free copy when it comes in or a $10 off coupon of some sort for my MacBook.

I ordered my copy last night - it's shipping on February 5th for $9.95 + tax (no shipping), but as mentioned, the $9.95 covers shipping and handling. I'd rather have a DVD of the software than to download it anyways.

I know this is a little different topic but apple currently offers leopard, iLife 09 and iWork bundled with a $40 discount. Will this most likely continue when snow leopard is released? Or should I just buy them now (pre-order) since I have Leopard already and they won't have the bundle later?

That's not entirely true. Once they've announced the program will be released on a certain date, they are in a difficult position to sell computers with the old software. Sure, buyers may not really know, but basically they're selling computers with the older iLife version on it, and that's going to deter people from buying. Could they get away with it? Sure, but it's only going to antagonize customers. It's precisely the reason they don't announce new products in advance of availability.

Hi Chupa Chupa et al,

OK - my confusion actually came from the 1-800-MY-APPLE hotline. I've called there 3 times and each time I get a different answer. I was told that the Up To Date program is just a download and not a mailing from my the first rep I spoke too. So, from that perspective I felt the download should be free.

And, from that perspective, my experience when dealing with Microsoft was that when they released a new product usually they make the software free retroactive 30 to 60 days and since I was under the impression it was a download as Apple indicated I though it should be the same.

Since I am a "newbie", I expressed my frustrations with the Apple Hotline in that I have received many different answers about this program and what products actually qualified for the update since I bought a refurbished Mac Pro which I subsequently returned only because I was told that if I bought the unit a couple of days later I would get the free update.

I value my dollars and the principal.

As such, Apple understood my point and will give me the free update once I buy the refurbished Mac Pro this week so I am happy about the resolution to this customer service issue.

TBH, that's your own damn fault. Macworld was the very next day and if you decided to buy a whole new Macintosh the day before Apple's big show where they announce new products then that's the risk you took, sorry, no sympathy here.

I just typed in my MacBooks serial number and put that I purchased it on the 7th (I actually purchased it 1'st December'ish) and location of purchase and it's added the upgrade to my cart... am I ok to just go ahead and order it? Don't wanna get busted or nothing :D I'm 15 btw.

I want to do the same thing but I have an AppleCare agreement registered to the serial number of my Macbook which would show purchased on December 20th 2008...

Do you have the Applecare? What's the worst that can happen? I don't wanna get busted for fraud... lol

EDIT: Do you think waiting till after Feb 2 shipping date might be smart? Or just try to order now and hope for the best?

Done... ordered.... The serial number doesn't seem to do much, just enter it and it lets you add iLife 09 upgrade to the cart.

My guess it checks if your Macbook is a unibody model, and if it is, no questions asked...

...just dont let apple read this thread.

Makes me wonder if I could have got a few months extra on my Applecare if I hadn't registered it the day I bought my Macbook....

EDIT: FYI Apple charged me $13.00 + tax in Canada... I guess its about right given the current exchange rates, but why advertize 9.95 USD on the Canadian website?

Also, it shows me Ships: 30 Jan Delivers: 6 Feb

I know but when I registered AppleCare it asked for the date of purchase, I activated it the same day I bought the Macbook. if I waited till today, maybe I could have got three years from today's date...

Anyhow, I'm not out to scam Apple, but I still feel they should give you the upgrade price if you bought it before the 6th.

And for those that say if you make the date December 14th, those who bought it the 13th will complain, how about something like:

Bought 08 in December: 9.95
November: 14.95
October: 19.95
September: 24.95
All the way up to the retail price. Fair no?

TBH, that's your own damn fault. Macworld was the very next day and if you decided to buy a whole new Macintosh the day before Apple's big show where they announce new products then that's the risk you took, sorry, no sympathy here.

Well, I disagree so if I were you Kardashian I would not listen to this defeatist advice.

My advice to you is to call the 1-800-MY-APPLE hotline and ask to speak to a Supervisor and ask for some relief.

Like I said, Microsoft usually offers at least 30 days retroactive free upgrades for Office and Windows and tell them as a customer you expect the same.

You bought your computer thinking that Apple would have good customer service for the extra price you pay for your equipment just like any other business that charges higher prices.

Your dollars are hard earned and even though the typical Mac customer is not price sensitive, as Apple gains more market share then more customers will be in the price sensitive camp and will ask for leniency of attitude.

I know this is a little different topic but apple currently offers leopard, iLife 09 and iWork bundled with a $40 discount.

Actually, it's not a $40 discount, it's a whopping 40% discount. And this is a really good deal. (Making it $118 off for regular, and $168 off for Family Pack.)

For either the regular or family pack (5 license) version, you can think of this as buying Leopard at list and getting iLife and iWork '09 for $15/ea. Or, alternatively, you can think of it as buying iLife and iWork '09 at list price and getting an extra Leopard license for $10. :)

Either way, it's a heckuva deal.

It's unknown whether this bundle will continue when Snow Leopard comes out.

I could understand for people who bought a new Mac before the annoucement, but I think it should be a free upgrade for anybody who is buying between MacWorld & when iLife 09 ships. Just my two cents.

Yeah, I bought my macbook pro the day after macworld just because I wasn't sure if they'd do anything to them. I'd rather spend $10 then $80 though.. so it's alright with me, even though a free update would be the best.

I still have to wait till February 2nd for it to ship though :(

Same here. Unless they really thouroughly verify the serial numbers anyone can have access to the promotion.

EDIT: I find it hard to believe they would allow you to place the order, receive payment, and only then check the serial numbers. My guess is either they don't care or there's a loophole in the form and it's not correctly checking the serial numbers.

They probably don't care... Apparently (from what I've read) iWork 09 is shipping without the need of a serial number... So you could lend the disc to 100 friends to install.

And plus, they give away iLife with every Mac. How many copies do you think Apple really sells for full price? Maybe a couple people buy it, but most won't. Sure they're are new features... but $79 worth?

Look at the math... Would you rather charge $10 and have say 1 in 2 people upgrade (100 people = 500$), or have only 1 in 20 people upgrade at $70 ($350)? Less money and more unhappy customers...

The loophole is on purpose...

Did you buy an older, discontinued model from a retailer like BestBuy? My friend bought a Black Macbook (from Best Buy) for a significant discount (old model) and Apple needed him to manually send in the AppleCare and iLife even though he purchased it on the 8th of January.

If not, you shouldn't really have a problem... I bought the unibody Macbook in early December (and even registered AppleCare with purchase date in early December).... I entered my serial number and it let me purchase iLife 09 for $10

I just realized you were talking about an iMac... They haven't seen refreshes since Mid 2007... You have the current model...

That said, Apple keeps note of the serial numbers, and they approximate when they would be bought in their system... It could be they happened to ship you an iMac that was on the shelf for a year (but still new) so the date in their system is skewed and that's why the iWork upgrade didn't work...

Just hypothesizing though...

I doubt it. Leopard is necessary to run with one (or both) of the '09 products, that's part of why they are doing it that way.

And isn't it a $118 discount ($79+$79+$129 for only $169)? (Looks to be about $89 off for education)

The people who really wanted leopard bought it ages ago, so they're really just making a few bucks off of the stragglers (IMHO) on Leopard by selling them the other two products. Getting everyone with the more up-to-date OS and possibly selling a few more iWorks and getting people hooked on it (or maybe selling a few more iLife's than they would have for people who only wanted iWork).

I would have only purchased iLife but this deal is making me think about it (I've got an old machine with an older OS).

There really isn't a true "update" to the iLife suites. It's just a new version. A previous version isn't required when you get iLife 09'. Even if it's in an "up to date" program.

$9.95 is reasonable, for a product that's not even released yet.
Anything before the announcement - buyer beware, including those folks who bought it on the 5th... what were you thinking?
I'm glad that they're doing this at all.

What if you bought a car just before the financial crisis, and saw the price drop by 10k - or a 'get a free car' promotion came in - would you want half a free car because you bought it the day before they announced the deal? Or a quarter free car if you bought a month earlier?

Do you take your DVD's back to the store a month later when it's not new and it goes on sale, and you've watched it 3 times?

Apple's doing the right thing.

I bought on 01/02/09 and was told by a 'genius' that I would be allowed to upgrade. We'll see. BTW what I was thinking was that I needed my computer.

Stealth product releases are great and all, but if caveat emptor is the policy *and* you don't give people a heads up *and* you charge a 15% restocking fee for even timely returns... then well, you can take your self-righteous "it's your own fault for not waiting until after the [now-obsolete] cult meeting" BS and shove it.

Now, that being said I knew MW was coming and didn't care. I fully expect to get my upgrade. But, I am a lawyer. I can be very persuasive. My 160gb iPod Classic just died during the switch-over from pc to mac [hard drive gave out]. I got it from my wife for last X-mas. You know when I got the Mac, do the math. Yeah, no warranty. That means $180.00 to replace. I was having NONE of it. Nor did I. Replaced. Free.

I agree not to stop at "no", it is always worth asking for. And it is your OWN fault for not waiting. You cant wait 3 days for something that is probably coming out, who are you gonna blame, apple?

ill pay the $9.95 once I look at the app and see if its really worth the update. Which it probably ISNT. And ilife apps usually get an update in January each year. I dont see what the big stink is though. 08 is just as good.

That said no matter when they made the cutoff someone would be ticked off, so I figure that's the way it goes. HOWEVER, since iLife ships free with every system $79.00 seems like a rip, with iWork I can definitely see it.

Now that the retail product is shipping, I would expect to see it as part of the bundled applications on any new Mac, but the apple store is still listing the 08 version with their computers.
Thus is completely unacceptable. ilife 09 should now come as standard with all new macs. This crap of paying 10 dollars or whatever is really cheap.

In fact, they seem to be getting cheaper about what they include all the time.
When I bought my MBP in 2007, it came with a remote control included. they did away with that a while ago. They took away firewire ports, too.
I wouldn't be buying a new MB or MBP these days.

I would encourage anyone buying a new mac after ilife 09 has shipped that they refuse to buy unless the latest ilife version is included as part of the package.

Don't worry, If the current stock does not have 09 pre installed, you will get the up to date disc included, if not, the store should give you one for free. Simply because their listing records doesn't list the new versions yet is irrelevant. The up-to-date cost was to cover purchasers between MacWord (where it was anounced) and on Tuesday when it was released formally.

You shouldn't have a problem... This isn't CSI:Cupertino... The serial number just checks that you have a mac that was recently purchased.... Like I said before, I registered my AppleCare saying I bought my Mac on December 14, then 3 weeks later, I bought iLife and entered a purchase date of Jan 7th, and it let me buy it... There not doing intensive background checks and cross referencing information...

Why would you get longer warranty? A lot of people say this and it's due to a lack of common sense. The warranty adds 2 years onto your original one year. Registering your AppleCare on the very last day of you standard manufacturers warranty would give you the same period of time it would if you registered it the day you bought your Mac. It doesn't give you three years from the date registered, it adds two years to the original one.

Yes... I know it adds two years to the original warranty regardless of when you register it...
But if the "purchase date" is October 6th, 2008 it would be three years from then... if Apple says your purchase date is January 7th, 2009, you get three years from that date...

When you register Applecare it asks for date of purchase... Apple knows the date roughly, but not the exact date... I know people that have bought their Macs in October, and they put purchase date November 16 when registering AppleCare and it lets, so they get three years from that date... Obviously this won't work if you're trying to register an iBook/Powerbook with purchase date Jan 2009...

I got my new MB the other day (about a week ago) and just realised that it came with iLife 08... Apparently this $10 update doesnt apply to us and we have to pay full price? Whats that all about???

no we get it for £7.95. it's on the website.

Well, I just did it, ordered on the 2nd, received on the 8th, but put in the 7th, and my S# and it went through.

Bought my MacBook from the Milton Keynes Apple Store yesterday and the iLife '09 disc was inside the box (underneath the MacBook).

Amazon say they are still shipping Macs with iLife '08 (in the UK, anyway), can this be right?

I tried contacting them but they are useless, surprise surprise.

I've just bought an iMac and here in england the ilife update is for RM39. I presume this means £39 for the upgrade, just wondering if there's a significant difference from iLife 08 to 09 and whether its worth the £39.

Thanks

Nick.
