MBA Rev A. still need Coolbook?

Does the Macbook Rev A (which is now selling cheap) still require Coolbook to prevent core shutdowns or has Apple managed to fix the problem with software updates over the past year?

I'm talking about the 1.8 Ghz SSD one, BTW.

I think that coolbook helps the Rev A a lot. It is well worth the money.

Im dubious, it helps a little, but then i don't get core shutdowns without Coolbook running anyway so i don't bother with it anymore.

Coolbook lowers voltage, thus running cooler. Core shutdowns occur because the temp is too high for the machine to handle. A cooler laptop means the fans work less, thus saving battery performance. It's a worthwhile investment.

I did not bother to re-enable it after the last update and have not had an issue. The only time my machine gets above 80 degrees is when I compact a VHD in Parallels.

During a normal day I have Entourage and Excel open with an instance of XP in Parallels and Safari open with no complaints.

I do still use SMCFanControl with a minimum fan RPM of 4000. My office is pretty noisy so I do not notice it much.

I don't watch much youtube though or play games though.

Completely agree, but even without Coolbook mine never reaches the point of core shutdowns, even after hours of Handbrake.

All im saying is it does work fine without the need for 3rd party voltage regulator applications, but i agree with you its probably beneficial in the Air's case.

I am using Coolbook and I am very happy with it. I actually set the speed to 600 with 0.9V (i think) ...the battery meter says i will get 6 hours and 11 minutes run time...which will be more like 5+ hours hopefully...

But runs smooooth and cool (much better than my macbook white) :)

I've found somewhere where I can get the Rev A. MBA 1.8ghz with 60gb SSD brand new for £749.00 (ex VAT) - You can't even get it that cheap on eBay!
I'll make sure to invest in Coolbook for it though.

just a thought here but if your not concerned with battery life at all or you are plugged in you could just use smc fan control and crank the fans up all the way:apple:

Try it out first. I've never had a core shutdown, even before the software updates.

Some MBA's had the problem, others didn't.

I would try it out for a few days before going the coolbook route.

I was only asking because when they unified the packaging for the MacBooks the Air got a downgrade. The Rev. A box was nicer and I think a little smaller too.

I think CoolBook is indispensable. Even if you're not getting core shutdowns, CoolBook + SMCFanControl lets you run with barely any fan noise, ever. My fan is chugging along at 2500rpm @ 40ºC right now.

Yep - black box. Comes with everything the MBA Gen A should do, incuding the video adapters. :)

Well it came as promised, but developed large dark vertical stripes up the screen within one day! These were especially evident when the screen was dimmed.

A new one is arriving Monday - so annoying because the machine is lovely.
