So I switched to osx last october with a 12" PB. Now I've convinced two others to pick up ibooks, and actually went with them to help them pick em out. And this weekend, (i just got it set up actually), i picked up my first ipod, a 40gb. So basically the question is, how does a newbie go about fully earning their stripes?

As a side note, anything y'all would recommend to a new ipod owner? software, utilities, music, whatever. let's build.

Sounds like you've earned your stripes, newbie.

Check out www.ipodlounge.com for all things iPod.

Good job newbie, you'll be promoted from Newbie to MacUser 2nd Class. Two more conversions and you'll be promoted to MacUser 1st Class. If you're called a zealot on one of these forums you will be immediately promoted to MacUser Lieutenant Zealot. Eventually you will be promoted high-enough that Steve Jobs will give your own Reality Distortion field. Good luck MacUser 2nd Class. Huaah!

For iPod stuff also try itunesregistry.com as well as ipodlounge.com.

Well lah-de-dah solider, you want a promotion? You got it, MacUser 1st Class all the way, now get out there!
As for the rest of you, someone's got to be down at the bottom wishing they were whale crap at the bottom of the ocean and that's reserved for Windows users, so shut up and get on the ready-line. G*d*mn newbies! ;)

I think the biggest problem is convincing someone in the tech field how great these Mac's are. The biggest problem I have are professors or people that seem to be die hard Windows users, but yet complain about all the problems that I never have to deal with with Mac's. One of the recent ones was opening up some postscript files, preview opened it up right away while they had to wait about an hour for Illustrator to open the file on a windows system. Any one have any other experiences to warrant a Mac over a PC?

We haven't a hope vs the PC army... We just have privates (note: rephrase that later..) and Colonel Panic, while the PC army has General Access Fault, not to mention several Major Problems..

How long a line of 'switchers' can anyone claim I wonder? That's what amazes me, that once someone switches, they are so happy that they tell others.

My friend 'switched' me in early Jan. My sister wanted a computer in early Feb and I 'switched' her. Now my mother has seen hers and wants one. And my sister (who knows v little about computers - it still excites her when she creates a folder correctly  ) has just encouraged 2 friends to get new Macs since their PCs have recently died.

Common thread:
Dead Windows PC due to mysterious software/OS slowdown generally - and no technical awareness/inclination to re-install
Someone telling people that they'll be able to do everything on their Mac they could do before on a PC and use existing documents/pictures
Someone pointing out the advantages of more secure OS, less virii and fewer patch downloads.

Ah yes, the common things you here from Pc people who just envy you! Stopped to defend myself a long time ago to the PC folks or even try to switch them. It's not worth getting into an argument with those mindless zombies. And also when I show off to my friends, something goes wrong....Happend to many times. But anyhow, I am glad that after a hard days work behind my pc@work, I come home and can get behind my Mac! :D

Oh no... they're not envious and mindless! They're switching. The three things above were the trigger for doing it!

I think the biggest problem is convincing someone in the tech field how great these Mac's are.

You want difficult, try getting an open-source die-hard to consider the Mac. As far as they're concerned, OS X, Safari, etc are all closed-source because Apple won't release the GUI elements. And then, one might ask, how would Apple make any money? Selling botique hardware?

Bragging rights...

First, I own 3 macs and an iPod (see sig) but my Dad has owned them since the Mac Plus (PowerPC 7600, iMac, PowerMac G4 800), as for people I have converted:

12" PB w/ iPod
12" iBook
15" PB
Dual 400 Powermac (older, but that's what he got)
PB G3 Wallstreet (same guy, he was a diehard Windows user, but I gave him an old PB and he went nuts, I think he's going to get a 15" PB now)
800mhz eMac
1Ghz iMac
15" PB (I was just in CompUSA and a guy asked me what I thought and he just bought it, so that counts.)
People who will probably buy a Mac as their next computer: 5.

So, I'm still an old sergeant here, but there appears to be some officers around here. Show some respect newbies!
