Which Power Mac G5 is this?

I know it's a G5, 1.8 GHz, but does it have a model number? So I can google more about it...?

Well seeing that there's "one" shield of the processor. It's a first-gen single 1.8ghz PowerMac G5.

yes, some fans and memory-modules are missing. I might get it cheap, really cheap, but I don't know if it's worth the effort.

Most other pictures I have seen of G5s have a different MB layout...

That's not a dual 1.8Ghz machine, looks like a single to me. In fact, I think it is one of the oddball 2004 release models - http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g5/stats/powermac_g5_1.8_2.html

Actually, I'd bet money on it. Those machines shipped with 80GB hard disk, FX5200 GPU, 256MB of 400Mhz DDR RAM and an 8x SuperDrive - exactly what is listed on your readout off the side.

So, would this machine run OS X 10.4 or maybe 10.5 decently?

It'll run Tiger happily, and Leopard if you up the RAM to 2GB-4GB (which is the max it will take). It won't be the fastest thing on the block, but if you can pick it up for cheap then it'll be fine.


Not sure about whether it is missing fans or not though. My old Dual 2.5Ghz had a pair of fans that went infront of the CPU block, but the single 1.8 may have not needed them. I can't see the mounting for them on the bottom of the case, so it indicates they may not have shipped with them at all.

Yeah bump it to 4gb ram(max) and it will run Leopard very well.

I found one similar G5 on ebay and it shows it not having the pre-processor fans either...

I actually got two 512MB, 400MHz modules and a 250GB S-ATA drive laying around here somewhere. Guess that will do for a while. More RAM can always be added later.

In total it will cost me around $100.

IIRC the earlier G5 models had a shield per CPU.
So, a Single 1.6 had only the lower "half" of shield shown below.
A Dual 1.8 or 2.0 would have looked like this:

Thanks for the correctin. I meant to say one shield with a single G5 printed in the middle. My dual 1.8 looked like the one you have pictured with 2 G5s over each processor. Also I think the later dual-core models went back to that first design to with a single G5 over the whole shield.

When the G5 was first launched only the 2.0 GHz was a Dual config. Both the 1.6 and 1.8 were singles, and thus had only the lower half of the shield.
After just a few months the Single 1.8 was quickly replaced by the Dual 1.8, which Apple should have started off with in the first place.
