Phone: Iphone 3G Software 2.2 with AT&T
System: Mac 10.5.6 White Macbook purchased 14 months ago.
Using PwangeTool to jailbreak...I get an error when I start iTunes after I put my iPhone 3G in DFU mode. I get a “Successful” message in pwnage. The error message is: “An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error occurred (2001). What do I need to do? (I only want to jailbreak it, not unlock it.)
On another message board a guy had this...
"Hi Guys,
Who ever is using the late 2008 model Mac’s i ran into the following problem…
My phone has never been jailbroken and I am trying to do it for the first time. I get to the point where it says “Quickpwn is about to to run on your iPhone 3G.” and it does nothing from there. Just before that starts iTunes launches, says waiting for iPod, and gives me this error: “An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. An unknown error has occurred (2001).” Then QuickPWN freezes.
Found this as the fix…
A FIX FOR THE LATE 2008 SILVER MACBOOK’S.
Grab a USB hub from your sisters bedroom. Then follow the steps as usual. The DFU mode block seems to only affect the MACBOOK ports only."
I'm going to try the USB Hub but since my computer is not a late 2008 model... I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this problem? Thanks, Josh

I'm also having this problem.
@hipwsp- how do you downgrade the iPhone's firmware?

My understanding of downgrading is first you would download the older firmware...
http://lifehacker.com/398906/jailbreak-iphone-20-with-pwnagetool
...has some examples under "What You'll Need" or try to google it. Once you have the firmware, go to iTunes, in the iPhone main screen... press 'option' button and hit 'restore'. Find the firmware file. You will need to delete the current 2.2 firmware (or whatever you are using) before trying to jailbreak.
Please let me know if that works. Thanks.

I wanted to update this thread in case anyone comes along in the future and has the same problem.
I was successful in jailbreaking my phone over the weekend.
The trick is to use a USB hub when you are trying to enter DFU mode. Just follow the tutorial, using PwnageTool... like the one below....
http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/pwnagetool_2_2_3G_iphone_expert.html
I guess more importantly after you jailbreak you phone read a couple tutorials on the hack that phone site... it has so much great information.
http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/step_2.html
Download OpenSSH and learn how to edit your themes that way... if you are on a mac, use Fugu (using Fugu... you see all the files on your phone and computer...and you edit them), follow the instructions on the hack that phone site... don't be scared it's not that hard. I created my own theme use Fugu... it's as hard as making a new folder... once a made a couple of changes using examples from other themes, I chose my theme using Winterboard... winterboard is basically a list of all the themes you have on your phone. You can turn the themes on and off... and list by priority. So, of course your theme would be at the top and any other themes/changes you wanted to make would be 2, 3, 4... etc on the list.
My biggest suggestion is to try things out... the worst thing that can happen is you will have to restore the iphone to the original settings. Happy jailbreaking... Josh

Is this problem for all 2008 late macs or any mac that's running 10.5.6?
I've heard different answers to this question all around this forum!

I had the same exact problem with an early 2008 Penryn Macbook Pro running 10.5.6
I never figured out a solution to the problem, but I was able to jailbreak the phone by booting my XP partition and jailbreaking with the windows version of quickpwn.

This problem effects the Late 2008 MacBooks and will effect the Early 2009 MacBook Pros. It is because the IOUSB hub in the new notebooks doesn't recognize an iPhone in DFU mode. This also affects all Macs running 10.5.6. It is currently not know if it is a bug or a tricky anti-jailbreak weapon from Apple. There is a fix here, but I don't feel that great about it because of various reasons including that it is an Automator script. My advice is to find a friend with a PC and will download WinPwn or Pwnage Tool for you or find a friend with an older Mac that will download QuickPwn or Pwnage Tool for you.

I ran into this problem. 2.2.1 won't work with any mac running 10.5.6
look on torrent sites for 2.2 firmware and use that to restore your phone.

I'm getting the same Error (2001) with my 2.2GHz SR MBP (10.5.5), Pwnage (2.2.5), & iTunes (8.0.2). I currently have the phone restored with iPhone (2.2) and I'm trying to jailbreak it with 2.2.1

I have been using a late '08 imac and iphone 1st gen. firmware 2.2.1 i already created the custom firmware and put it into DFU mode. BUT itunes keeps giving me a popup window Error 2001, or Error 21. I have NO idea what to do and i have hacked the ipod touch and iphones before! I'm stuck thinking weather i should try out one of those online iphone unlocking programs or just not being able to use my phone. :( PLEASE HELP.

You guys gotta use a AC POWERED usb hub. Any cheapo plug in wont cut it because it doesn't have enough juice.
This is what I used http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8339871&st=belkin+USB+Hub&lp=6&type=product&cp=1&id=1175901728107

I used Quickpwn not PwangeTool, much easier.
Don't know what else to say but using a powered usb hub worked fine for me on the first crack at it

When trying to enter UDF mode, connect your iPhone using a USB hub. It really does the trick.
In my case iTunes still complained BUT QuickPwn carried on with operations and in the end was all successful. This applies to late 2008 macbooks and Macs running OS X 10.5
Good luck !
