How come the Apple DVD-R discs say 4.7GB on them, but they are only 4.29GB in reality? Are other brands closer to 4.7GB in reality or are they all 4.29GB?

Unformatted drives/disks are always larger than formatted ones. I hadn't noticed on the DVD-Rs but the "missing" amount looks about right for formatting loss.

This isn't special to Apple--look a your hard drive and see how big it is. A 20GB will format to around 18. The bigger the drive, the bigger the difference. They always advertise the unformatted size. It's normal.

All DVD-R's you only get about 4.3-4.4GB usable space, don't worry about it. And don't waste your money on expensive Apple branded DVD-R's either! ;)
