I know there are few fans of seminal Sixties show The Prisoner (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=162203), so I also know that there'll be quite a few people here saddened to hear about the death of its star Patrick McGoohan (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7829267.stm) earlier today at the age of 80 following a short illness.

As well as starring in The Prisoner he also wrote and directed a number of episodes and he also found acclaim for his roles in Dangerman and Columbo, winning two Emmy awards for his performances in the latter.

RIP Patrick.

He was a local in my small town for some time. It's sad to hear about his passing.

That's sad, I loved Dangerman as a kid and was intrigued by the Prisoner a bit later. They're dropping like flies.:(

Certainly one of my favorite shows from the 60s--he was superb in the role.

Be seeing you, Mr. McGoohan. RIP.

I think it's time to get the box set of The Prisoner out and watch it in tribute to a great actor.

Very sad news; I loved the Prisoner, it is one of my all time favourite TV series', intelligent, original, classy, creative, demanding of its audience and questioning of its world, and utterly, utterly compelling. A brilliant, superb actor and an incredibly moral man who remained true to himself personally and professionally all of his life. And what a commanding screen presence and what exquisite diction. A great loss.

Cheers and good luck

I read that McGoohan turned down the roles of James Bond (presumably when Roger Moore took over) and Gandalf in the LOTR series.

He would have been great in those roles. I thought he did well in Braveheart...

Dangerman and The Prisoner were both great shows - before my time, but I discovered them a few years ago and watched on DVD. RIP Patrick.

Not only that, I believe that he also turned down the role of Professor Dumbledore due to his failing health; a pity, he would have been wonderful in that role, too.
