Hey guys, there's a new app that enables the Japanese Emoji for us:

http://appshopper.com/utilities/touch-dial

I couldn't care less about the landscape/portrait dialing, I want the Emoji!

I agree, whats the point. Unless you send it to somebody who is on an iPhone with the same app its useless. Non-iPhone or app users will not see the emoji.

I disagree that texting lowers your IQ...in all cases atleast. Texting is a very convenient and quick means of communication when you need to share small peices of information on the go. It replaces the need to be arogant and talk loudly on the phone in public places. However, emotions are hard to convey. Thats why emoji is good.

Well my boyfriend and I both have iPhones and share apps, so it would be almost worth getting just to use for each other. But the app's page is written so badly, it's turned me off to getting it. LOL. Seriously - if English isn't your first language, can't you at least hire someone to write your app's description with proper grammar?

It would be nice if someone could make an app that would enable the emoji on our phones, but nothing else. I would love to have emoji, but I don't want to buy an app with all of the other "features" that this app has.

Aside from the fact that it seems this is marketed towards people who end every sentence in "lol", this is the very reason why I won't buy this app. Increasing the price as it becomes popular is a sure fire way to turn me off of an app.

You have to pay for that app? Lame. If you don't want a jailbroken phone, then jailbreak it, enable emoji and then restore. Emoji stays and your phone is stock again. All for free and it may take you 10 minutes.

Well I enabled emoji on my ipod touch (JB) and I hardly use it when emailing my friends. Sometimes I do, but i am used to the yahoo's version of emoji. The apple ones are square and fugly.

Actually, I believe all iPhones can display emoji irrelevant of their locale or whether they're jailbroken or not- it's just that you can't easily access them to type in without some tricks.

As a test, if I'm right anyone on an iPhone (and iPod Touch running the newer firmware) should be able to properly display the following Emoji: 

The app looks like it just has "emoticons" rather than true "emoji" which are much more elaborate and cover actions and places also.
I recall a post referring to them being in the iPhone....Will try to post link.

Yeah, I don't understand what this app actually does either, but it looks like it can send SMS...somehow. Nevertheless, it's proof that Apple is going to allow Emoji across all iPhones, which is a definite change in policy. Expect "useful" apps to come out soon that also enable Emoji.

Maybe studies have shown that lots of people who text have a low IQ, but that doesn't mean it lowers it...

Oh yeah lol. lol.
I'm just kidding.
But yeah, why would they increase the price?
That's some pretty bad marketing there.

Any iPhone or iPod touch running 2.2 software can display Emoji characters system-wide regardless of whether or not you are Japanese, have jailbroken, or have installed this app. I send my friends Emoji texts all the time and they can see them no problem.

Just like how we use smilies in this forum, I like to use them in my text messages. Is there really something wrong with that? I'm not going to spend $5 to get it, in fact ... my friend and I are investigating and will most likely release a free Emoji enabler some time in the distant future for those who are afraid to jailbreak or use a backup editor.

Speaking Japanese doesn't mean you're part of a Japanese market where something like this is in Apple's best interest. There are a few caveats - PCs and Macs can't view the characters (unless you're using Firefox http://photar.net/emoji/), there's no landscape keyboard, etc. There should be no feeling of entitlement here, you bought the phone knowing it had no Emoji to begin with. It still has no Emoji.

I'm looking forward to that. I just want a simple app that allows me to use the emoji in emails and text message. I have been waiting for something to come out, since I like to use emoticons, and a lot of people I text with have iPhones. I don't, however, want an app that does anything else, like the one mentioned at the top of this thread. I'm still a little unclear on what it does, but I don't need a lot of extra frills, I just want the emoji. :o
