Can I use an ATA hard drive for my powerbook when the original is ide? What is the difference. Any help would be awesome.

ATA and IDE are the same thing. But they both have to be the same size (2.5")

My understanding is that ATA is the official designation of the interface standard and IDE is a marketing name used for the same thing. Sort of like the difference between IEEE-1394 and FireWire.

as I know it the term ATA came out when Ultra ATA/33 came out. till then it was called IDE or EIDE. even Serial ATA would be part of the same tech. but not compatible.
