I have some Best buy gift cards I could sell, but where can I sell them? Besides Ebay, since they charge you and stuff.

Any sites that boost my Paypal Balance and are legit?

Or ways to work money around the neighborhood?

Try Craigslist - I usually sell things I won't use there, and you can usually get a good price.

Also, buy a used MBP instead of new, if you're trying to save money. If it was well-taken-care-of, it will last a few more years.

"Get a job" is pretty much your only option (that's how I pulled it off, if you care. Yes, I still have that job, btw) You can try doing odd jobs around the neighborhood, but $2k is a crapload of money when you don't have a job. (heck, it's a lot WITH a job)

You could - just make sure you put that down in the Craigslist listing... But some people might think it's a scam.

And I know the boat you're in - I, too, had to find a way to get a MBP during college (three years ago). It happened, but it took me over a year to scrimp together the savings for it. It paid for itself 10 times over, though!

I haven't bought new in the past 8 years; last Mac I bought new was a Power Mac G4 in early 2000s. As long as you buy from either (a) a reputable eBay seller, or (b) someone else who seems trustworthy, you'll get a good deal. Macs generally age well, and if they get through their first year without trouble, they'll continue to work well.

I had only one minor problem with my MBP (optical drive went flaky), and I decided to sell it. The buyer got a great price, and just used an external drive he had. He's still using it and enjoying every minute. He could've paid $1,999 new fore a baseline MBP, but got a 2.4 GHz MBP with a 500 GB hard drive and 4 GB of RAM (i.e. maxed out) for $1,599 instead.

Now, if you really have technolust (like I do) for the new aluminum enclosure... that's a different story :D

for College...

you dont really need a mbp for college.

reason: cuz i went to college over the last 5 years

in fact, you can survive with no computer at all as there are labs and in the case of my school, even 24/7 labs. was that convienent, no but you could get by if you had to

you could always get a mb or even a way cheaper pc laptop/desktop

just my 2 cents

edit: why the hate on refurbs? they are actually more assured than new as they have been tested and as tallest said, you can get surprise configs (for the better). they also carry the exact same warranty as refurbs

for someone so focused on price, you sure are aiming high dollar for no reason

Fine. Waste time trying to make MORE money when you could have a brand new machine for less.

They change the case. They fix all hardware/software problems. Some refurbs aren't even BROKEN to begin with; if someone returns a perfectly fine, IN BOX computer, Apple cannot legally sell it as new, so they put it on the Refurb Store.

If you're not going to take advice I don't even see why you're posting.

To demand an almost £1400 computer, when you don't have a job must mean you're from a very rich or thrifty family. Without earning a wage, or someone giving you the money, I don't see how you're going to get one.

Do you expect someone to give you some formula which allow you to 'poof' money into a box infront of you?

Go out and get a job. If you can't get a job, you can't get the computer.

Also, you say you won't get a refurb for the sake of saving 'a few bucks' - but can someone with no bucks really dictate what to do with this fictional money?

FYI, my MacBook Pro is WICKED.

The new macbooks are extremely capable. If you don't need a MBP for business there isn't much sense in having one. Even for gaming, the 9400 is more than sufficient for todays needs.

Acutally, most refurbs are going to be more reliable than a nib model. With a refurb they test every item on the computer before they ship it to ensure it works, on a new one they spot test random models so you could get one with a bum part.

IIRC, apples warranties for the refurbs are the same as their new models, so it only makes sense to get a refurb. Especially if you are pinching pennies. If you cant get a job and you are looking for a quick way to get a comp i wouldnt be too picky about what you can get.

Of course but that will mean delaying your purchase later. They are the exact same thing with the same warranty and everything but for cheaper. Anyways, you could get a temporary job that won't interfere with school. See something like SOS Staffing (www.sosstaffing.com) they can place you in temporary jobs so you can make your money and then do another temporary job, and once you have enough money you can just stop taking new jobs. :)

They update the store constantly. The new refurbs are hot at the moment, so they don't last long. But yes, they do. They have the new MB's and MBP's; AFAIK, the only current models that don't have refurbs out yet are the new MBA's.

Why doesn't it make sense?

It's cheaper, the exact same computer, and still carries the 12-month international Apple warranty, 90 days phone support, Apple Care-capable, Up-to-Date scheme capable and everything a new computer is.

The only difference is the box.

You don't receive used, scratched-up refurbs, they are BRAND NEW but because the internals have been sold before, and used less than 14 days, they're sold as refurb. The casing is new.

You're insane. If you had the money, I could understand - but you can't even afford a refurb.

No, it won't. Not to mention, once you are enrolled, most schools don't give much of rats *** about your GPA as long as it is better than 2.0 or so.

So unless you are planning to go to Harvard, your GPA isn't all that important. Actually, even for admissions most schools look more at SAT and ACT scores, since they are more of an apples-to-apples comparison. they don't drop because you took a challenging class or went to a "rigorous" high school.

Fine, get a basic job - 16 hours a week. 8 hours Saturday, and 8 hours Sunday. Also, you'll be paid the weekend rate which is more.

When you get your first months wages, apply for the Amazon credit card.

Use 75% of your wages and your Amazon credit card to pay for the MacBook Pro.

When the computer comes, cut up the card, and make regular payments from your new 16 hour a week job. You should be on around £360 a month (I know you're US, so xe.com it) so in 3 months you could pay off a base MBP.

Seriously if you think you must have a Pro machine for college... and that you are too good for Apple's refurbs... then I would suggest that you are incorrect on both counts.

Having any computer in college is a luxury. Having a laptop in college is a bigger luxury. Having any kind of Apple laptop, even a refurb in college is a bigger luxury. The brand new spanking latest model MacBook Pro... well sure that's the biggest luxury of all.

So basically you "need" the biggest luxury computer, yet you have no money. Oh... and you also want to pull this off without getting a job.

I'll attest to the top notch quality of the refurbs and the only people I can think of who wouldn't bother with the $$$ savings and buy a refurb are well people with loads of money to spend, and who don't like the thought of anything not being "new"

Except for having loads of money to spend, you appear to be just like that lol :D So in that situation, I think you should reconsider.

As for ways of making money, why don't you start an eBay store? Use your best buy cards as seed money, pick up some quality electronics at low prices and sell them on ebay. Or scour flea markets and sell vintage stuff online.

That or buy a guitar and start busking on the sidewalks. :)

1) you dont need a mbp for that. a mb will more than suffice

Well no, I want one because it is a nice computer, with a light weight and it is powerful.

It's programs just give me more of a reason to use. And if I ened to do anything Windows, I can run windows on it. So why not?:apple:

But, how much would a refurb 2.5ghz, 4gb ram, 320 hard drive Cost me?

So, now not only do you want a computer without earning it - you also want the software to match?

This is quite possibly the most annoying and pointless thread - ever.

You're coming to a pro-Mac forum, and telling everyone you'll pirate the software.

And, Apple set the prices, not us.

1) you dont need a mbp for that. a mb will more than suffice
2) powerpoint is more than adequate for presentations
3) presentations and grades from them are more about content than the program you use to make it, which by the way pp is no slouch....

im starting to agree. hes probably getting a kick out of all of this

Its all about capturing your audiences attention. Presentations need visuals, nice effects, etc.
And the MB has an awful screen, compared to the MBP.

So you think the fact the MBP is 2" bigger is going to "capture" the attention of the audience?

It should be your work capturing the attention of the audience - not the computer.

And surely, if you're giving a presentation, it will be on a projector or large LCD - so the fact the MB has an inferior screen is also irrelevant in that regard.

I'm enrolled at the business school at NYU (Stern). I need a MBP because its heavy in technology and its Keynote program is just what I need, esp. since I am taking a Marketing class and I will need to market products, or things in that nature as projects. I am using Windows and it just can't compete with the other kids in my class that are making powerful presentations using Macs and I have a weak Powerpoint.
Wait, WHAT?

Powerpoint is more than capable of making amazing presentations. What type of school do YOU go to?

Your poor powerpoint presentations are not because you have a bad notebook, they're due to your poor presentation skills. The key to a good presentation is to not make things too flashy, but just appealing enough to catch the viewer's eye. You can make a custom background, use custom sound clips, and add custom images, make yourself some pretty pictures and cut up some good sounds, and go about life happily. I don't know how you're going about in school without a job unless you magically got a full-ride?

As for working possibly taking down your GPA, I'm still in high school, taking 4 college courses, and working 32hours a week because my father lost his job, and I'm able to maintain a 3.8GPA and still see friends and enjoy the internet. I'll be done with my first year of college at the same time I graduate high school and am going pre-med. It's not impossible.

I'm a full time student, and I have two jobs. One at a dining hall and another at campus technology services. I don't receive any type of aid from the government to go to school. I also volunteer my time at WTOP-TV 10 as Director of Programming. It's a very time consuming job. I consistently get a 3.2 or higher.

I guess what I'm trying to say is... GET A JOB! Life is not full of hand-outs. How do you expect to make any money unless you contribute to society?

And why do you need a MBP? Isn't that a little overkill? You're a business student. I'm a broadcasting major and I edit video using Final Cut on my MacBook. I think you should be able to run Keynote just fine...

I'm sure this has been discussed, but for the person in the first page that recommended you take out federal loans and invest them in "safe" stocks is an idiot. Good luck getting better than 5.6% return, which is what the loan terms will be if you take it out for next year. Not only that, but it is a terrible idea for short term and even long term. Also, if you don't get it in subsidized loans you will be losing even more money. Assuming you aren't independent I'm going to venture that you aren't going to be getting subsidized loans. Especially if you are going to a private school as not everyone has the kind of money upfront to get into a highly ranked private school without a little under the table to certain individuals. If your parents aren't paying your tuition or you aren't there with at least a partial scholarship I really do have to question your financial sense. Add that to the fact that you seem to need the MBP I'm wondering about that exact thing.

O FYI. NYU? Christ at the business school your cost of attendance (upwards of 40k) is more than mine and I'm in medical school.

Well, that's COOL.:p Never seen that before. Is there an easy way to get to this screen from any thread?

And what happened to the Members List list?

...I hear you can get some $10,000. That's enough for a Mac Pro with 32GB of pre-installed RAM!

Wait for Gainestown.

Wasn't the whole reason we were going to send you there in the first place was so that you could sell your kidney? Btw, if you sold your left nut, I hear you can get some $10,000. That's enough for a Mac Pro with 32GB of pre-installed RAM!

Lol. Being in medical school I have gotten mail from fertility clinics to donate sperm. I guess they want someone who is intelligent. Unfortunately it seems the OP is out of luck in this department. Though you can make a lot of money from it.

You're in high school, dumbass. I am in business school ranked #5 in the nation.

Try doing that **** there, dumb****.

If you want to play it that way then, at least tallest skill can afford to have a MacBook pro and you can't :p

I'm confused; Polo, you want a new computer but you don't want to work for one. How would you acquire gift cards? I'm really confused. Also why are you buying the I need a Mac ********. You obviously are doing just fine if you GPA is so good. Besides, all the people I know in know that a MacBook is just fine.

Just steal it already: You know you want to.

And me!

I also bought a new BlackBerry Curve, 4th Gen Nano and Canon 1000D.

I had to sell both balls, a kidney, and agree to spend a few hours a week in a darkened room with magazines.

But OP, its so worth it.

Go to the thread list (in this case MacBook Pro, PowerBook) and click on the number of posts for the thread you want.

Arn took it down about a month ago because it was being accessed by undesirables and slowing the site down. You can still find it if you know the address. ;)

Hold on... Why is anyone even bothering to post here anymore? This guy is obviously not going to heed any advice unless it involves getting a top-of-the-line mbp for free. Whats even worse is that this guy is majoring in business administration (i may be wrong, but thats what i inferred from your posts) and cant even figure out that you need to earn moeny in order to spend it and get a computer. And on top of that he refuses to take advice from us on how to lower the initial cost...
You, sir, will never make it in the real world. Drop the arrogance, take our advice, then come back. Neither of those attitudes will get you anywhere in the business world, so learn how to conduct yourself now lest your fancy degree go to waste.
