I randomly decided to put my computers back in action doing some folding, and decided this time to be on the macrumors team as user oaklandbum (previously I was on the [H]ard|OCP team and a short bit on the MacAddict team with the username of rrp). Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to have everyone list what machines they are using in one thread.

Here are mine (none of them are on 24/7 as they are in my bedroom and I must sleep):
450MHz G4 Cube
Shuttle SS40G with an Athlon XP 2500+

I'd run it on my old PowerTower too, but there is no Linux PPC version. Anyone wanna donate a G3 or G4 upgrade so I can run OS X?

8 500 Mhz G4
2 800 Mhz G4
14 867 Mhz G4
3 1.0 Ghz G4
3 1.6 GHz G5
8 2.4 GHz P4

and a partridge in a pear tree...

I have:
iBook 600 G3 (not worth it, but it has the "can't wake from sleep" bug so it runs 24/7).
iBook 800 G4. 10 hours a day.
Athlon 2.4 24/7, but on a computer used by several people.

I had another Athlon but it now hangs when folding and the second CPU is in heavy use. Anyone know how to limit a unix process % cpu? I can see how to limit cpu time, but that doesn't seem to be what I would want to do.

Nothing too impressive, but it does the job.

i may have misplaced a few procs, but i do know i am running:

4 2Ghz G5 (running 24/7) = 8 Ghz
8 1Ghz G4 (running 24/7) = 8
2 733Mhz G4 (running 24/7) = 1.466
1 400Mhz G4 (running 24/7) = 400

17.866 Ghz (@ 24/7) MacOS

4 900 Mhz PIII (running 24/7) = 3.6 Ghz
6 2Ghz Xeon (running 24/7) = 12
2 1.4Ghz PIII (running 13/5; 24/2) = 2.8 * 0.67 =1.876
26 2Ghz Xeon (running 13/5; 24/2) = 52 * 0.67 = 34.84

52.32 Ghz (@ 24/7) Linux

so, that's about 70 Ghz at a 24/7 rate.

plus, i have 2 2Ghz G5; 2 500-Mhz G4 at home, currently not running.

great setup...but shouldn't it be 2x2x4=16ghz for the dual g5's? probably some of those other ones are dual too... folding does use both processors right?

Hey, you've got my Mac beat. Yours has 2x the processing power of my Cube. But I do have my PC which is hardly ever on, so that helps a little.

I know what you are saying MrMacman, got the same problem @ work. Have a beautifull grey 2.0 P4 sitting idle most of the time. And there are a lot more... Maybe it's an idea to go to my old college and install folding on every machine.... They only remove that in the summerholiday when they do a clean install of all those windoos machines. Is there a script for windoos such as Mc68K's script?

I don't know about scripts, but there was with (getting name wrong) 'micro-folding application' like with a microscope or something...

I don't know...

But it worked for my friend I'll try to find out... unless someone here reminds me first...

I have tons of Pc's and 3 macs that I have basically complete access over expect they have a proxy server in the way, anyone want to help me config them?

Shouldn't be a problem if they got access to the internet and if the firewall has the correct port open! (I believe for folding, correct me if I am wrong!!, 8080).

So good luck MrMacman, and try to catch up with me.... ;)

How difficult would it to be to make an install CD/Script that I can just put in the G5s and go? I also have to bury it pretty deep in the harddrive.

I also have about 30 eMacs in the lab with the G5s, if someone can provide a way to stash this stuff on there, I would try to hook them up. Anybody?

i use a .fah folder in the home dir. ~/.fah/fah1 and a ~/.fah/fah2 if it's a dually. i ftp the fah4 binary to the folder and:

mkdir -p ~/.fah/fah1 (and/or ~/.fah/fah2)
cd ~/.fah/fah1 (or ~/.fah/fah2)
./fah4 -configonly -local

then set the crontab as in m68k's scripts.

@reboot cd ~/.fah/fah1; ./fah4 -local -forceasm > /dev/null
@reboot cd ~/.fah/fah2; ./fah4 -local -forceasm > /dev/null

or if the machines work all day and the user don't need to notice it...

0 19 * * 1-5 cd ~/.fah/fah37; ./fah4 -local -forceasm > /dev/null
0 19 * * 1-5 cd ~/.fah/fah38; ./fah4 -local -forceasm > /dev/null
0 8 * * 1-5 /usr/bin/killall -q fah4

it's not that hard! i'd done it for almost 60 procs. it takes a moment a processor.

i've written a bunch of adhoc crontabs, aliases, symbolic links of stats to localhost webservers, and cgi scripts to monitor everything.

Don't no, maybe we should open a new forum called "Vote on a banner design 2". Don't think Mr. Anderson will appreciate it, but I 'm in a crazy mood now... so maybe... (let's see how fast Mr. Anderson shuts it down...) :D

I think it would be best not to tempt fate. Mr. Anderson made it very clear on the last thread, that he was upset by our continued questions. I tried to soothe him, but that's when he locked the thread. We need to learn patience.

Might as well chime in. For some strange reason I didn't think to register with F@H using my MacRumors username. I'm using 'mikeandbev' over there, but shhh! Don't tell anyone. ;)

At home
G4 733 Quicksilver
G3 600 iBook
Athlon 1800+ (FreeBSD)
Celeron 800 (WinXP)
Athlon 700 (WinXP)

At work
Two G4 1.25 PowerBooks
Dual G5 2.0 Power Mac (both processors)
P3 1 GHz laptop (Win2k)
Two P4 2.8 (Linux, just added today)

Everything's 24/7 except the iBook which is known to be put to sleep at times. Actually it came back from logic board repair yesterday, and the fan doesn't seem to like running full time anymore. I may just let it finish the work unit that was interrupted by the repair and then relieve it from duty. It wasn't producing much anyway, between the speed and being asleep part of the time.
