Heh... I'd do 'em in 8 hours... but the first 50 units I did were way back ages ago... when I started going at it again, I had an average time of nearly 70 hours

I'm in 26 and climbing...

The time it take me to do a unit is about 6 hours (since I got my dual 1ghz)!! However, since I had lots already logged using an older computer which took 15 hours per unit. It take quite a long time to reduce the averages!

hey maybe you guys could give a walkthrough on installing the terminal app. or refer us to an app like folding control for seti. that would be way cool. i stopped doing seti because the gui app was terribly buggy and was screwing my system up. wiped the little bugger off and everything went back to normal. if there was a seti control like folding control maybe i would be tempted back...

Go to setiathome.berkeley.edu and go to the CLI Unix clients page. Download the Darwin version listed under ppc, and run it through stuffit expander. Create a directory somewhere on your drive, mine is in /Users/[username]/Applications/seti1 (and [..]/seti2 since you need to run each client in its own directory for multiple processors) run the program (./setiathome) and it will ask, depending on whether you are a new or returning user, for either the email address you signed up under or other info. After you have run each client once, you can add them to the system crontab so they will run continuously whether you are logged in or not. I use Cronnix (search on versiontracker.com) to edit the crontab because I am lazy and hate vi but you can do it by hand pretty easily too.

This is how to install the CLI version.

1) Go to the download page and get the "PPC .. darwin" (cant remember
full name) + place onto the desktop.
2) In your applications folder create a folder called "SETI"
3) Inside that folder create 2 more folders, "SETI1" + "SETI2"
4) Now, you need to put a copy of the contents of the downloaded files into
the folder (once they have been unstuffed by double clicking on them)
5) Go to the terminal + type : cd..
6) type : cd..
7) Type : cd applications/seti/seti1
8) Type : ./setiathome

(This will set up the first CLI.) Open up a new shell window (Apple key +
N)

9) In the new window, type : cd..
10) type : cd..
11) Type : cd applications/seti/seti2
12) Type : ./setiathome

This will set both clients up so that they both run

I use a Graphical front end (similar to Folding Control) once I have set them up so that I dont have to mess around with unix. If you want that, go to http://www.versiontracker.com and search for SETICNTL. Place that applications in the applications folder + open it up. Go to the preferences + use the help system to set that up.

Hope it helps.

No offense Taft, DONT hijack the thread! This is about SETI! We have already talked about the reason why people use SETI instead of Folding in other threads.

Okay you got me!

I'm quite happy to crunch the odd folding WU to help the folding team get a higher rank.

Seriously though more people should join SETI and FOLDING to help MacRumors get higher rankings in both distributed efforts.

Maybe we could organise a SETI and FOLDING push.

Press-ganging other macrumors members to join in the effort.

Now that sounds like a plan!:D

Let's bury the hatchet and try to get some new members for both the teams.:)

Was just watching the news + apparently some scientists have discovered a solar system that has the potential to have an earth like planet!!! Tell SETI@HOME To point their telescopes that way!

Since I'm one of the accused I have this to say in my defense:

This is the only way any of the MacRumors teams will make an imapact.

I'll muck-in with the folding push.

Slackers beware, I've finished my degree now so I'll be on your case if you don't produce at least 1 WU each week for either team.
