there's something wrong with it, either it's the old macbook, even if new, or he's a scammer.
It says combo drive in the description, as well as ddr2, and the new 2.0 has ddr3 of course and superdrive, even the 2.1 plastic one does.

Dude, i hope its not a scam!!!
I had a horrible ordeal trying to get resolved from a Motorola Razr phone that was JUNK when it arrived (aside from the amount of junk that i expected out of motorola! JJK, the Razr was decent).
Anyway, this "seller" scammed me (and like seriously over 100 others after my sale) and I never got a refund or anything.
AND to make matters worse... there are no real PEOPLE to talk to at Ebay and their help "chat service" is an automated (and cyclical--very frustrating) joke too.
I'm praying for you (and your paypal account!)

usps tracking is useless. it states its delivered or not delivered. there is no actual tracking and you dont get to sign fr the product saying it was recieved. scammers like to send things like photos or tape / cd cases. then say look it was delivered.
signature on deliver is a little better. at least if it feels way to light you can refuse to sign for it.
i hate to say it but that usps is a really bad sign.

Smells like a scam .. That tracking number means nothing , just states that they logged in to the USPS site and created a shipping label.
That is just so you send the cash and make you think they are legit .
I hope its legit and you get a good deal , but sure seems borderline scam .

Yeah sadly this does seem to be scam. Oh well, we'll see in a few days when you actually get a cheap Dell or something.
USPS doesn't have tracking. It's only delivery confirmation.

Suspicious.
Until now, only sold items under $200.
Somehow the person has dozens of computers that cost $1000 which calculates into something like $10,000 investment?
He IS selling knockoffs of other products...
However perhaps the people on ebay are using live discount to buy from each other, reducing the cost of product every time?

The live.com discount is capped at $200 per transaction and up to 12 transactions per ebay account. ebay/paypal fees are roughly 8% or so of the final selling price. Therefore, a $1500 macbook pro has $120 worth of fees.
i bought one of his macbook pros for $1500, and I'm prepared to dispute with my credit card the instant it seems dodgy (like it hasn't already?) but i'm willing to give him the benefit of a little doubt.

Let us know what transpires. There was someone in Montreal on ebay that was selling new Macbooks a few hundred less than the going price. In their ad they mentioned that many ebay sales are refurbs and they claim they're new, etc. They claimed they didn't do this, but then they must be getting them stolen because the margin on these machines is like $100 for the retailer. They make their money on all of the after sale items, such as Apple Care and cases, etc. So, it's either a scam, or a stolen machine. Notice that buying a stolen machine makes you in possession of, you guessed it, stolen property. So, I conclude that you either got scammed, or you bought a stolen machine, which is also being scammed. So, in short, you got scammed, or you got scammed.
That items still looks for sale at $1400 for a 2.0 ghz macbook, it doesn't seem like much of a deal.

Which turnip truck did you fall off of? There is no way he would be selling those for $900 unless they were stolen or he is scamming you.
Either way, you can kiss your money goodbye. USPS delivery confirmation numbers are worthless. You could be getting a box of rocks and you have no comeback. I really feel sorry for you.

so lets say he has a box of rocks. Then the recourse would be disputing the charge because it is "not as described."
the credit card companies are on your side. ebay is not that helpful and paypal resolution is slow.
i bought one. I'm an ebay veteran. Have I been burned before? Yes, on ebay and on the forums (not this one), but my credit card has had my back.
I've got the customer service number for my credit card on my iphone.
did you even bother to look at the whole picture? The seller's ID has been verified by ebay (which is more hassle than is needed), and even if he stole someone else's account, your credit card is on your side.

no. earlier on in the thread, or in another thread (there's an identical thread to this one in the macbook pro section of the forums) he/she discloses what his/her ebay screen name is.
Besides, the seller is "ID verified" which means that the seller has jumped through many hoops to prove their identity to ebay.

if i was the seller i would say buy it
but if i get it good deal if not i get my money back w.e
i already mentioned it:
is there a chance that the thread starter is the seller? and this is just one big prank?
no. earlier on in the thread, or in another thread (there's an identical thread to this one in the macbook pro section of the forums) he/she discloses what his/her ebay screen name is.
Besides, the seller is "ID verified" which means that the seller has jumped through many hoops to prove their identity to ebay.

Hey, it might be real.
I won a Rev B MBA 1.86/SSD on eBay a couple months ago for $1940, free shipping. Took him awhile to ship, which made me nervous, but it came 11 days later, brand new, unopened box, perfect. I even took it to the Apple store to confirm it wasn't stolen.
This seller shipped FedEx though, had much more feedback (thousands, not 51), and sold many laptops every day. I think he's called "electronics king" or something like that.
Best purchase I ever made and in the end, it was cheaper than my Rev A MBA 1.6/HDD ($1799 + tax = $1947)
EDIT: Sorry guys. I remember now that I got $200 live cashback so it was $2140 for the auction but to me, that was still an unbelievably good deal. Just looked up the seller on my ebay: He is electronic-king-inc and currently has 13,275 feedbacks.

i exchanged messages with the seller. i believe he/she is legit in the sense that I will get my macbook pro.
beyond that, it is a private ebay transaction between the seller and me.
because of that, I won't comment on it any further (on this thread or the other thread in the macbook pro forum) unless I feel that the transaction is not going to happen.
and if you want to accuse me of being the seller, then clearly you have not done your homework/research and there is no point in trying to convince you otherwise.
to travis64, i think you have reason to be optimistic. and don't feel like you have to prove yourself to anyone on this forum. If you got an unbelievable deal on a macbook, then you got one. if not, your credit card will back you.

hey how are you getting these so cheap?
macbooks are price protected, like all of the other apple products that are non-accessories. so vendors that buy straight from retail pay almost the same as consumers who buy them. if there is any extra margin for the vendors it is probably 100 dollars, but i HIGHLY doubt that they make any money off macbooks themselves. usually vendors will want you to buy accessories with your macbook or ipod, which brings in the revenue for them.

It may not be a scam. The seller was not actually selling fake iPhones, he was selling fully-functioning knockoffs. There are all kinds of imitation products that come out of China, like the various Wii consoles that aren't branded by Nintendo. It may be that he has a relationship with the Chinese manufacturer that produces the Macbook. Instead of scamming the buyer, he could be scamming Apple.

"BZZZZZZ" wrong answer! You never contact paypal. You always contact your credit card first. Paypal allows the seller to drag out the proceding. The credit card will go to bat for you right away and goes on the offensive.
I contacted the seller for a 3rd time this morning. (not all in one morning) If i don't get a response by tomorrow night, I will contact the credit card.

what is puzzling is that the seller is still selling things on ebay and has had positive feedback left for him (none from notebook auctions) since he started selling laptops.
most would cut and run with the money.
As for the USPS tracking number, i was told that the shipping service used on my auction would be international. (i haven't received one yet)

So what happened with this one? did he get scammed!? I was thinking about buying a macbook off ebay, but after reading this thread I am a bit scared. I will probably just buy a refurb from the apple store or a new one from the apple store then maybe buy apple care off ebay.
Consultant
Jan 27, 2009, 04:52 PM
Think about this.
The auction states:
"Shipping: Item will be shipped withing 24hours after payment is made."
However, up to now the tracking number has not shown anything is shipped.
The guy currently has 4 auctions, each selling more than 10 laptops of around $1000.
So, over $40,000 of goods from someone who originally sold DVD, and $150 knockoff phones?
He is decling offers, probably just offers from other scam artists. (So he IS online, but does not answer questions from people who "bought" his products).

Selling things to other scammers and fake ebay accounts to make it look legit. As long he pulls the money from his PayPal account as soon as he gets paid, he knows PayPal can't get it back from his bank account.

ebay's policy is that you can't initiate a dispute until 10 days have passed to give adequate time for the seller to ship and receive the item.
my auction ended about 7 days ago. i'll still dispute with the credit card
superwoman
Jan 27, 2009, 06:51 PM
If you raise the dispute with your credit card company, then wouldn't you be effectively disputing with paypal, and not the seller? Because paypal is the one that deducted the funds from your credit card account. So from that point of view, the amount deducted by paypal is totally legitimate, since you *did* authorize paypal to make the deduction.
I thought the right thing to do is to raise a dispute with paypal instead. In my experience (albeit for a paltry $50 sum), the dispute was resolved in my favour within days.

The thing is, there has to be things that will flag it. Not all payments are held. I sold a notebook via eBay for about $600 and I had access to the paypal money right away. I don't know the feedback info on the guy but I dunno if he would be flagged to be held payment or not.

The FAQs state that PayPal considers a number of factors in determining a whether a transaction may have a higher risk of dissatisfied buyers, including the following:
* Seller's % Positive Feedback in the last 30 days
* Seller's Detailed Seller Ratings in the last 30 days
* Final price for the item
* Shipping & handling fee
* Seller's eBay tenure as an eBay member
* Seller's total number of Feedback

While everyone has a right to doubt Travis as the eBay seller, people should really keep that to themselves and not insinuate until there's further proof.
If the item is being shipped via USPS w/o signature confirmation, you're in for a long ride.
To make a long story short, I once ordered AppleCare via eBay shipped via USPS and the seller did this scam where some random item was shipped to my area code and deemed my original item shipped while it never came. USPS electronic tracking shows items shipped to an address in your area code, but not an actual address. Lucky for me, I scammed the scammer back. On PayPal, any item over $250 requires signature confirmation and the seller did not send it w/ that feature. I filed a complaint w/ PayPal and they were able to get my money back.
Another time, I had a seller on a car forum scam others and myself. We all sent him $ for his parts but no parts ever came. We all created one big complaint to PayPal and after 4 months of evidence collection and investigation, PayPal finally gave everyone a partial refund of our payments. The scammer went dark and authorities did not allow for his phone # or address to be released though we had his real IP address. So, it's very possible for people to do this type of thing and get away with it.
I really don't know who you should be contacting, eBay/PayPal/Credit Card company.
I mean, if you lost your cc and someone bought a tv from Best Buy, sure, your cc co. will be the first and only place to contact. But if it's via eBay, you're technically going thru three companies and having to merge and coordinate the complaints. And it's likely they're all going to tell you to contact one another to get the $ back. It's going to be a damn ***** mess.
Good luck and keep us posted.

sigh...... STILL wrong.
1. credit card - dispute the charges, get conditional credit, then after providing documentation of transaction, the credit is permanent. Lose no money
2. paypal - dispute the charges, paypal investigates, burden of proof is on the seller, if no response or no proof, refund all money.

Bottom line after all of this is almost the top line too:
"If it looks too good to be true, it probably is"
it's been said over and over and over and yet people still get taken in on these things. Just because the credit card company will give you the money back doesn't mean there's no cost to the system and it propagates this kind of fraudulent nonsense.
World of internet, please, the time has come to crush these scammers by NOT FALLING FOR IT.
[best of luck to those here who need to get their money back, let it be 'once bitten, twice shy'.]

Did you notice the positive feedback from the one buyer in the private listing? Wasn't the MB auctions private too? That means he got his, right? Someone should send him a message asking what he purchased since he said that it was as described and delivered.
Then again, I still think that the seller's account was high-jacked.

Jan 28, 2009, 10:12 PM
no that was for a phone pretty sure
uicandrew
Jan 28, 2009, 10:22 PM
i already contacted that person who left the positive feedback and he/she told me that the item was a phone.
i don't think the seller's account was hijacked. here are my reasons
1. Hijacked accounts usually tell buyers to send payment to a specific paypal account. Unless the hijacker has BOTH ebay and paypal passwords, they can't touch the money. So the auction description will tell buyers to pay to a specific paypal email address. (Seen it before with powerbook auctions)
2. Hijacked accounts don't last that long and have many more items for sale. Since the hijacker knows that the account won't last long, they have PAGES upon PAGES of items for sale.
3. Seller also responds to emails sent through "contact seller" link on ebay. The seller would also have to have the password for the email account. therefore, a hijacker would also have a separate email address in the listing to be contacted at. everytime you use "contact seller" a copy of the email is sent to the email address on file. The real owner would likely notice emails about auctions that they didn't list. (another reason why hijacked accounts don't last long.)
4. items sold are consistent with previous items sold. The person sold fake iphones. fake iphones are made in China. macbooks are also made in china. usually, hijackers takes the account of someone who sells lots and lots of small knicknacks, where there is a high number of feedback.

No you can't.
Good Luck in getting it.
uicandrew
Jan 28, 2009, 10:50 PM
no. feedback is not retractable. sellers can respond to feedback, to give their side of the story.
Why would he sell it to us?
He's given you a bogus tracking number.
Also, I called ebay and they said that since the seller has DSR (detailed seller ratings, the x out of 5 stars) of LESS than 4.1, he can not list new auctions.

what evidence or reasoning do you have to support that idea?
who's to say that i'm not the seller, trying to defend myself?
or for that matter, who's to say i'm not steve jobs, marauding as a troll, trying to pump up the secondhand market for macs?

I don't blame the people who got conned into buying this, because the price ($900) looks reasonable (I resell computer gear.. and I frequently obtain the MBP priced at $1999..for $1650..I know my supplier gets it for cheaper.. so it *is* possible to get a MB for $900.. but that would be close to cost)
I have experienced tons of sellers with 4-5 feedbacks.. relatively new, selling stuff for close to cost - with stock photos - and I have received all my items. The best way to prevent being scammed is to use a credit card in conjunction with paypal - so your ccard can back you up in the event that paypal does not.
It boils down to luck - I mean some power seller with 15,000 feedback can suddenly decide to pull a scam.. imagine how many people would get fooled! Hey, if Madoff could get away with 50 billion..

I'll chime in. I bought a new guitar off eBay on 1/2/09. The seller waited a few days to ship it even though he assured me it would go out within 24 hours. From the time I purchased it to recieving it was about 13 days. I picked it up from UPS because I missed the delivery, ate dinner, came home, opened the box and it had a damaged fret. I looked it up and this is not a simple fix. I notified the seller immediately. No answer for about a week. I also started a dispute on PayPal just in case. Finally heard from the seller, he appologized, offered to replace the item which by then I had bought locally (for more money) and submitted a claim on eBay to mutually void the transaction so he could get his fees refunded. I had already shipped the guitar back. Two days after the guitar was delivered to the seller he contacted me again and said he'd give me a refund once the merchandise was received. I replied that it was delivered already. That was a Friday. After them having the guitar back for almost a week still no refund and no answer to emails.
Finally... They'd not ever responded to the dispute process which I escalated to a claim so PayPal gave me a refund which was immediately credited to my account.
The seller had 100% positive feedback and still sells things. Not sure if they just dropped the ball on this or not. About 1% of new stuff is DOA so anybody that sells enough stuff is going to run into the problem. The crappy part was they ship the guitar in a free guitar case so if they'd checked it out for a couple minutes after taking it out of the box they could have prevented the mess. In the end I paid more for a guitar than I did for a guitar and what turned out to be a nice case which I could have used and I was stuck paying the return shipping plus it took three weeks before I had a playable guitar and almost a month before I got my money back. Still buy stuff on eBay all the time and plan to continue doing so.
Not sure that helps but since this just happened I figured I'd pass the info along. Sorry for the rambling.

Classic Ebay scam
I think it's a lot easier now to get your money back from Ebay(Paypal) as they have taken some nice steps to protect people.
But it's taken them years and ten's of thousands have ben ripped off in the meantime.

it's called a multiple listing auction. if there were 8 available, and someone bought 1, there is still 7 left to be sold until the auction ends

You probably want to add to your first post in this thread with something like
"Edit: turned out it's a fraud. If it sounds too good to be true...."
nah, my friend works at best buy and he calls me one day and says "hey theres a lady here selling a macbook for 800 bucks and i know you're looking for one"
little did he know the specs. long story short, she was getting a divorce, skipping town, didn't want to drive an hour to return it at the apple store so she thought she'd give someone a good deal. lucky day for me lol

eBay + PayPal can be bad news. PayPal often refuses refunds for bad reasons, and eBay projection is false if you received anything at all.
In my experience, the best deals you can get are on places like Craigslist where you have to physically meet the person, inspect the item, and then make the purchase. I got my G5 on UsedOttawa.com for 700 bucks, which at the time was a great deal.

I got my iPod Touch 32GB (2G) two weeks ago for $250. :D It's just too bad me and the person i bought it from dont listen to the same type of music, cause he left all the music, music videos, and movies on there. That would have been a great!
Also picked up my :apple:Tv off of craigslist. got the 160GB model for $200 i think it was...

Keep in mind that A fool and his money are soon parted.
If you keep that attitude, you will scammed again sooner or later.
This is the reason ebay + paypal fee cost close to 10% of auction closing price!
They have to charge a higher fee to pay off the scammers.
People falling for scams -> scammer profit -> more scammers, more fraud -> higher fee -> higher product cost for legit products.

it's a curious thing.
If Paypal and Ebay (same co.) are giving refunds so easily I wonder what steps they are taking against scammers. There's a clear electronic path. If the resources were there they could lock up quite a few bad guys I would think.
But then again it may just be more cost effective to just pass on the loss to either taxpayers as write-offs, or transaction fees.

Travis Dude, you need to CHILL OUT.
Re-read all your posts on this thread. First you express doubt regarding the deal but you leap on it and shrug, hopping for the best. Then you get worried that you were screwed over and leave negative feedback. They you get worried that were too impulsive and want to retract your negative feedback. They PayPal fixed everything for you. You're all over the map. You feel one way but act another and it changes the next day.
You sound like a decent guy. When in doubt, DO NOTHING. Take a deep breath, give yourself some to figure things out and don't throw gasoline on the fire. Man, the few hundred bucks you're trying to save is not worth the weeks that this stress took off your life.
Best,
