Im not very savy at this so hopefully someone can help. I would like to install a movie from a dvd onto my iphone. Is this possible? I inserted the dvd into my laptop (its a pc) however I cannot figure out how to copy it onto the computer and convert it to mp4

The simplest way would be to just buy a piece of software that would do all the work for you. There are tons of programs out there that will rip DVDs straight to iTunes for use on the iPhone.
One is ******** DVD to iPhone converter (http://www.********.com/dvd-to-iphone.asp#dvd2iPhone) which I believe costs about $30.
There may be cheaper programs out there, but that's just the first one I found on google. I've never used that piece of software either, so I'd do a little research before purchasing that particular one to make sure you get the best value.
However, if you'd rather not spend the money, if you look around you may be able to find software that has some sort of free trial to do what you're trying to do, but that's not a permanent solution either.
Good luck!

You should use a program called "handbrake". It is open source and completely free, works great, and is easy to use. Just be sure to make sure you have it set for iphone/ipod or you won't be able to copy it to you phone.

Agreed, Handbrake works fine for this, you have no need to buy any software

+1 for Handbrake. It's free and works perfectly. No offense, but I think that if you're using a Mac and you pay for a converter program, you're a fool.

I use Videora iPhone converter (http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPhone/). It's free and very simple to use. You also have to download "DVD Decrypter" to remove the copy protection, but the Videora program walks you through all steps.
Just so you're aware, copying a DVD is technically illegal, even if it's just for your own use.

Well, since you choose the iPhone preset, it is going to make it the least possible quality while keeping it looking good on the iPhone. To do this it uses the 320x480 dimensions that the iPhone has. This will not look good on your computer. If you want to use the ripped DVD file to view on your computer then click the Normal preset, or a higher quality if necessary.
