my out-of-warranty 2G iphone declared "dead" by a genius - what should I do with it?

was hoping to hold out until the next rev, but this forced my hand and i picked up a 3G.

beyond making my dead 2G a paper weight, any suggestions on what i can do with it (e.g., sell it for used parts)? would like to try and make some of my 3G $ back.

i started getting a message saying "the device your iphone is connected to is not compatible" or something along those lines. even after resetting it would continue. when i turned the iphone off it would power back up and the message would repeat. finally the iphone battery drained, and it wouldn't turn back on.

the apple genius bar dude said it was dead and that i should buy another one.

Someone must be able to fix it. If that can be done, you can sell it and make some of the repair and 3G money back....

Sorry, I haven't had any experience with repairing my iPhone. Google "iPhone repair San Francisco" maybe?

Maybe someone else can shed some light?

I would think you could get some money out of it on ebay.....i see broken ones selling on ebay all the time and most for well over $100.

I had the same message, I was told "water damage" although I honestly never exposed it to water. Nonetheless if you take a super bright flashlight and a magnifying glass and look in the bottom (where the adapter plugs in to) you will likely see some green residue. The Genius told me that was the corrosion caused by water. I was told you can get some type of special brush and clean it off, although it will never be completely fixed it would serve as a temporary fix. I didn't have any problem with the battery, though.

I ended up selling it on eBay for PARTS making it very clear all that I had been told by the Apple Genius. I got ~$160 for it. I was pleasantly surprised. Turned around and grabbed the 3G for net $40

just posted it on craiglist with a full-disclosure. will report back on how it goes.
