Is there an ad-aware equivalent for the Mac or is protection against spyware just not needed on a Mac? I switched from the PC world several months ago, and I just remembered about spyware.

Nope, there's no real "Spyware" that can install itself without your consent. Some programs might want to talk to their makers, but you can stop that with Little Snitch (http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/)
