.vob is a file you find if you inspect a file structure inside a video dvd.

Video for Windows format .vmw is a microsoft only "crap" format imho and it will not play on default quicktime.

All your needs will be fullfilled with these three:

1) install and use VLC for "not so common" files, like .mkv and .vob etc..
2) install perian, for video codecs for quicktime. This will give quicktime player support for playing almost all the common video codecs found in avi(divx, xvid) etc...
3) for the .wmv and other "microsoft" stuff, you install "flip4mac" plugin which is basicly like the perian for quicktime. It adds support for .wmv and so on.

I think you will be hard to find a video that wont play using these three above solutions combined :)

It would be nice to one day be able to stream .wmv in OS X. It's a pretty popular format streaming from websites and it sucks having to use Fusion for it.

Better solution would be to kill all non crossplatform video formats all together. h/x.264 mp4 would be all needed imho.
