View Full Version : Macs and BMWs

Anyone notice how steve jobs always compares buying a mac to buying a bmw?
Anyone also notice that BMW is starting this new technology concept in the new 7 series called "iDrive"?
Hmmm...

Perhaps this has a link to the mysterious minijack on the iPod that people are talking about. If anyone has seen james bond (the world is not enough), he controls a BMW through what i believe is supposed to be a 3G mobile phone. Perhaps we'll be seeing something akin to that for the iPod?
;)

Yknow, the "knob" thing of idrive kinda resembles the scroll pad of an Ipod...but apparently everyone hates this new 'idrive' thing. Oh well.

Do you by chance have a link, to illustrate just what the iDrive looks like?

I think the iDrive is cool, the new 7 series is a very sophisticated car, I would love one!

Who wants to bet steve jobs has one?
I bet he just loves the fact its called 'idrive'
and that its "simple" (That one knob controls i think around 700 things)

Anyone else got a BMW?
I have a 95 M3, and I love it!
Its strange how things have cult followings, all because of quality...Macs...BMWs...hell, Jaeger LeCoultre watches have a cult following that rivals that of mac owners! (I have a reverso, and I love it!!!)
Quality. Thats all it takes.
(What about wes anderson movies? Cult following again. Quality!)
Also, if you dont own a BMW, is there one you would like to own?

I (and probably most others) fall into this category. The beemer i would most like to own is a 3 series, like this one:

Jun 13, 2002, 06:30 PM
We get that type of three series as a loaner when our cars are fixed, very nice. Much more space in the interior. But sometimes i think they lack the tight ride of the older ones...although I am coming from an M3 perspective, so its skewed a bit.
I always think its funny that in all car magazines, NOTHING can EVER beat the 3 series...be it lexus, jaguar, mercedes, this line is always in the review
"This car is a great car, dont get us wrong...But the three series is quicker, has a 5-speed, handles better, and is about 10 grand less..."

Nice concept, that iDrive. With the onboard computer controling so much its the perfect way to handle all the data as a single wheel and button in one. It will no doubt show up in other cars eventually.
Not really a bmw fan, I prefer to spend my money on other things - for a car they run a little high.

What I love about M5s is that it pretty much does it all.
Nice, family sized automobile. Fits plenty of luggage in the back...four doors..nice and luxurious.
But besides hauling the kids to soccer practice, it also hauls ass past the shmuck in a corvette next to you. :D

No doubt about that. My wife is on this kick to get a Saab 9-3 convertable. I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. But a 36k mile 99 model is going for 24, which isn't all that bad. We'll see, might go for a test drive this weekend.
Dignan
Jun 13, 2002, 07:42 PM
24 huh? Not bad. But see...I always wanna delve back a few years...thats where the interesting stuff is.
Howabout a 95-97 jag XJR? Full sized jag, 370hp, 0-60 in about 5.4
But since the mercedes E55 and M5 kick its brittish buttocks bad, it loses some credibility...and so price just plummets after a few years of owning it. And I think they are about 60-70 grand new.
Nice eh?

That's ok, but then you start to run into paying for repairs and maintenance. The Saab sounds good, its just a matter of seeing if it is a fit for us. I'd not mind a convertable, that's for sure.
Then there is the issue that she's saying we're not going to be able to get a new computer next year (looking at something that will be 10 to 20 times as fast as my 450 G4). If they come out with a quad G5 (oh please!) that would work, add 3 monitors and we're talking 10k. But I'd actually use it and still complain it was too slow....
So we'll see. If she really wants this car, it gives me some leverage for the new Mac - its all about comprimise......

Saabs are good cars, and I like the convertibles...My dad wanted to get one a while ago.

BMWs IMO are all right...my family used to have an Acura around 8 or 9 years ago. It got really convertable seating. My family, however, has switched to the Jeep line. I think that before the 2002 models the Grand Cherokee was probably the best model Jeep ever.
And, yeah, way to go on 4K, duke. :)

The 2002 model has a lot more features, but almost all of them are optional. And you have to pay more to get these options, which were standard in the 2001 model, such as the sunroof.
My parents have had Jeeps since 1992. I have been in a 1992, 1996, and two 2001 models, one of which was stolen. (Ask and I'll let the cat out of the bag on how it happened.)

Stolen Jeep (FWI: All the jeeps in the story are red.)
This hapened actually in December in 2001. My mother works inside of town and always drives and locks her Jeep when going inside her work building. She was driving a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited to work. At around noon time she went to look for her car and it was still there, but around 13:30 or so mom went to find out if her car was there (as she usually checks), and there was an empty parking space. She thought that she may have parked it somewhere else, but it wasn't anywhere else. My mother came to the assumption that her new $30000+ automobile was stolen. My father and I eventually found out and we filed a police report.
Sometime later we were given a ticket for a certain 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee driving through an EZ-Pass. It was then confirmed that our car had to have been stolen.
During that time, people were stealing a lot of 4x4s in an attempt to make lots of $dinero$. In Russia, these cars could have been sold for $100000!
Eventually, my dad offered to pick mom up a new Grand Cherokee. It was another 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but this time, a metallic red. It glows with light and, with luck, will scare away anyone who tries to steal it.
So far, we have not seen any site of the car, but we are happy with our metallic red. :)

Did you guys get compensated for the last one in any way? Insurance?
King Cobra
Jun 13, 2002, 09:39 PM
I am pretty sure we have insurance on all our current main cars. I know that when our car was stolen we filed the report. Eventually, the insurance company ended up owning the car; it's their car now. If they find it, we don't get it back (at least that is what I have been told).

Actually, we don't have BMWs, just Jeeps.
After this, we may be talking about VW Beetles and Mustangs. :)

the z8 looks nice but for over 100g's it shouldn't look so much like the z3....why bmw didn't do something cool like the old m1 is beyond me. btw, i drove an m1 once...not real impressive but it looked damn hot.
i'm late getting on this thread but i bought a new 320iS in 1981. at the time it was a rarity on the road. wasn't nearly as fast as the 911s i had been driving but it was quick enough, nimble and reliable. ( and predictable at high speed-woooeee a porsche can scare the heck out of ya):D
sold it 4 years later. the only beemer that i want now is the x5( or the mini...).

Nah you don't want a E55, or an M5 or an XJR..... total kittens in the company of the Mercedes C32 AMG...... canes all of the above......... and the M3 as well...... just for good measure...... 0-60 in 4.6 (auto) the ton in 10.8 and 158 top end (limted) but would do 180 if you ask AMG to forget the chip.......
The best Jag saloon is the S Type R...... pure Supercharged honey, and far better looking than the E55 and M5....... lest us not forget the Audi RS4..... remember this is an estate car, can do 169 mph, 60 in 4.7 and the ton in 11..... all whilst carrying your mates, and the boot full of duty free beer....... and if that doesn't get your juices flowing...... Audi are releasing the RS8 in 2004..... with and get this for an engine...... a W12 engine developing 600BHP.......... ah yeah......... :D
anyone remember the Z1? where the doors lowered? How cool was that...
Yep...... that was released in the late 80's..... and the doors lowered into the sides..... most cool....... overall though.... I'm not a big fan of BMW's......... alittle too common...... IMHO Audi's are more stylish and better looking........ Mercedes have a better reputation and if you want true honest A to B point and go ability in the quickest times, the Mitsubish Lancer, Galant VR4 and Suburu Impreza are the ways to go......
The new 7 is an amazing car, and I love the looks, but on British roads (apart from motorways) it's just too big and heavy at just under 2 tonnes........
Oh for those BMW loving guys amongst you..... check out www.bmwfilms.com amazing camera work and stunt driving here, the site contains short movies directed by some of the most influential directors around....... starring the ever cool Clive Owen as the driver...... if I have to recommend one, check Star as it stars Madonna and is fu*king hilarious....... :D ;) :p

Yeah, the M3 and the C32 are good, but I was mentioning the E55, M5 and XJR just as the "do it all cars", combining space, luxury, and performance...I would personally want an M3 with SMGII on it...
I love audis, if we werent a bmw family, I would want us to be an audi family. They are a bit more affordable, still have the sporty with luxury feel, like bmw...Mercedes is luxury with a little sport...And about 20 grand more expensive no matter what you are buying. Audi TT is such a damned good design, and its nice that they are incorperating it into the other lines as well...the S4 and RS4 are good, but in america, they need a horsepower bump to keep up with M3 and C32 (S4 currently is pumping out 250)
The S Type R is pretty cool, 400hp, but I read a terrible review, in which the auto tranny has limitations so it doesnt even put out 400hp! and the M5 and E55 put it to absolute shame in 0-60 time...but jaguar apparently wanted that...they "disabled" features to make them kinda "drag" race, because...A jaguar owner is more sophisticated than that!
Besides, all the low end jags look too much like ford taurus's anyways...stupid ford...
now the XKR? Ahhhh...a beauty...I drove an XK8 coupe, silver one...I felt like james bond.

I'd probably go for the C32 over the M3, although the SMG on the M3 would be abit of a giggle at the traffic lights with the launch control....... the C32 has just got so many good reviews though and any saloon car that can do the ton in less than 11 seconds has to be a good thing......
The Audi S4 is alittle long in he tooth now..... the RS4 though is a fire breather..... pumping out a cool 380BHP........ I'd love one........ just to race Ferrari's.... heh heh....... can't beat 4WD...... on a twisty demanding road..... even better when it gets alittle wet...... :D
The Jag S Type R is definitely an acquired taste..... and is a completely different machine to the M5 and E55....... certainly it sounds different..... with the supercharger purrring away (the opposite of the V8's throb) although there isn't that much in difference interms of everyday performance...... and the Jag is IMHO a much better looking car the M5....... I'm sure the auto box could be sorted out by TWR though....... (I hate some auto gear-boxes, the kickdown can be lethal!! :p )
The Audi TT is a fab car... although Audi have runied it by putting the small boot lip spoiler on the boot....... although I understand this was because the original cars has suspect high speed stability, and not long after they were released a few owners were killed after losing control...... they also muddled with the suspension and esp to take away oversteer and add understeer.... why??? understeer is a truely horrible thing..... particularly in a 4WD car....... would you go for the coupe or the speedster though that's the toughie..... I'd go with the speedster....... cos' I'm a pounce!! heh heh
We have a great Audi TT advert just started showing here in the UK, that is really psychedelic, with a Jimi Hendrix soundtrack.... and at the end it says "The Audi TT designed under the influence of Jimi Hendrix" great Ad.... for a way cool car....... :D
I don't really like the XK8, in my home town of Coventry (The Jag factory) the XK8 is everywhere, it's a REALLY common car...... it's sister car the Aston Martin DB7 is IMHO more aesthetically pleasing..... although if I was offered an XK8 I wouldn't say no of course...... :D :p

The audi RS4, its a station wagon right? That adds to the appeal. I love wolfs in soccer-mom-mobile's clothing
We don't have the weather for covertibles over here... although that doesn't stop some people having their roofs down in like January..... :p
The Aston DB7 and the Jaguar were developed on the same platform as far as I know.... they're at it again on the new Jag F type and the mini Vanquish Aston..... hence the similarties between the 2......
Yep the RS4 is a station wagon.... (we call them estate cars)..... the thing is just insanely fast...... can seat your family, and a boot full of luggage and still keep up with the Porsches of this world....... :D
In the early 90's Vauxhall (Uk arm of GM) and Lotus developed the Lotus Carlton, a 4 seater luxury sports saloon, that could top 180Mph...... a truely mental car, and the thing was like dirt cheap in comparison to supercars of the time.......
The guy that did that to his BMW definitely has a hard-on for Alpine doesn't he....... :D :p

Is it me, or does porsche need to put in 25-50 extra HP in all of its line? (except the turbo, and Gt2)
An M3 will run with a 911 almost exactly (if not faster), and is half the price
The boxter is way too expensive for what it is,
The boxter S is too expensive (when you could buy a corvette Z06 that whoops it bad)
I think that a 911 should have 340Hp, a boxter S should have 280-300, and a Boxter should have 240...
But then again, hearing a boxter S at full throttle is worth the entire price of admission...
Gotta love the whurring whine of a porsche.

nothing like the whine of a porsche turbo kicking in-gotta love the g force.
and thats what i meant about the m1 not being real impressive-it just didn't have that rush. especially when compared to the 930 that was available at that time for about half the $$$. bmw just plopped somewhere around 400 of them out so they could race it as a factory production car.
i love the moment between 0 and 60...i'm past the high speed stuff( at least on the open road). theres just no place to safely do it anymore...had a really close call at 135+ and that did it for me. let me just say going that fast on any public road is just stupid. don't do it. there are plenty of racing schools that will let you get your jollies-heck, they even maintain the cars..gotta love it.
i went from extremely fast to extremely slow and started four wheeling-did the mother of all trails- the rubicon. now thats a trip. couldn't do it in an x5( actually you could, but it would look pretty knarled afterwards...). nothing like driving for two days in only first and second gear.:D

Think you could do it in a mercedes G-Wagon?
I bet you could, and you would do it in style and comfort as well!
Now, so far as other cars go, with some BMW engineering...
Mclaren F1? Nuff said.

0 to 60 is cool......... I love 30 to 70 acceleration..... mid-range...... overtaking that's where you tell how good an engine is......... when you have a car (normally not a turbo one) that can overtake and pick off cars like superbikes...... that's when you know an engine is good........ just like I used to do in my 1300 Beetle.... :p

yes, and also how well the car has been geared...i've seen cars with wonderful power screwed over by poor choices in gear ratios. 30 to 70 in a porsche ( basically second gear ) is a wonderful feeling...nothing but torque. my friends and i used to joke that 2nd and 3rd gear had a miraculous way of making us forget the frequent and hefty repair bills....
beemers have nice exceleration but they don't give you the "raw sense" of speed that is so gratifying. a lot of that is the actual sound of the motor. beemers are insulated and quiet whereas porsche actually engineers their cars to let a good amount of engine noise into the interior-they know a person who drives one wants to hear the motor. and while i'm speaking about pooches, can i just say the 928s is a beautiful car.:D

yeah i have a f reg (89-90 i think) peugeot 205 1300cc SR:D :D
nothing special but it sure does goe some!!
on the back of the island where I live we have the "Military Road" built during the war all the way along the south coast of the isle of wight!
Man it has some nice curves and and shickanes but osme insanely long straights as well, in total i guess its about 20 miles long. Loads of places to overtake.
I raced a BMW 5 series in my peugeot once, he he. My peugeot maxes out at about 90 - 100 mph but the acceleration due to the 5 - gears (my mates on only has 4 ha ha) is awsome! Its only a bog standard peugeot but with me behind teh wheel it can overtake almost anything!!

my volvo station wagon, a 1984 DL, does 0-60 in about two minutes if i am lucky and gets less than 15 mpg since a lot of what i do is city driving
i wouldn't mind a bmw, quiet or not

there was a peugeot that was so slow that an official company slogan was
" 0 to 60 in the same day...". it was also butt-ugly. i can't remember the model#-you rarely see them in the states.
reminds me of all the old gremlin ads where amc made fun of their own car...
i still want a gremlin with the limited edition levi upholstery----smooooth....:D

if I'm going to fit it into my Matrix...I will need to take out the passenger seat so I can mount it in...kind a pain...but might be good if it ever were broken into...

now a peugeot is a really cool car...not fast like you say buy i see them from time to time but not too much...the new sexy ones are much more common and don't have the same charm as the old beetle looking creations
same goes for vw...though the new beetles are really modern and safe

Long live the X5, I havn't been bothered to read throught the whole post because it is so long, but if it hasnt been mentioned already, the X5 is the car to have! (or the M5 or the Seven of the 3 or the... pretty much all of them).
The M5 is a sweet car. We are getting one when my dad's old 535 goes capput (1988). What I'm going to get when i'm older is an M3 in white with red apple logo's painted all over it (kinda like the MWNY ones).
My advice to everyone reading this, is to never by a mercedes. Since they merged with daimler chrysler, i think they needed to cut costs, and all their manufacturing process small touches went the way of the dodo. If you buy a mercedes today you are only buying the name.

I definitely like the X5. When I was in San Francisco last October, I had the pleasure of being shuttled in one for a few days...and that thing was sweet! Aside from looking great, they are pretty quick & very clean on the inside. I still have to watch slowly as I see one go by on the road because I love them...he he he :D

In Switzerland over here, every 15 days or so a shipment arrives (from America, texas). We suddenly then see about 50 or so new X5's that run on the street. We ordered ours quite early, and now that we have it we have watched the number of others grow.

How do you like your Matrix, Eye? I've been wanting one since Toyota had the preview on their website. I've got an Echo now, and it is definately a cheap car. It does have Toyota's quality, but the interior is cheap and it lets in a lot of road noise. Flimsy body panels as well. It has never broken down or anything like that, though. I love Toyotas, but I am now a little skeptical of lower-priced Toyotas. (The only kind I can afford!) So, how is the Matrix now that you have gotten to live with it for a while?

Dude...I f***ing love it!! As I've been telling everyone, I haven't had this much fun driving since I was 15! :D
I have the XRS, so it sports the Celica's engine & tranny, so it's quite quick. The room on the inside is awesome, I'm able to fit my mountain bike in the rear without any problems. The ride is nice & tight, without being brutal. It sits a bit higher than a standard car, but not too high to make u feel like it'll topple over in a turn like some trucks can.
As far as quality of the pieces, I'm pretty impressed considering the fact that it's a lower-end model. I've notices a tiny bit of creaking with some of the dash pieces when going over bumps & also in the rear when going over curbs, but otherwise it's pretty solidly put together from what I can tell. I had a Camry before, so I've had the luxury of a very solidly built car.
I've always been a Toyota fan, and I'm very happy with the Matrix so far. As a matter of fact, a buddy of mine's dad saw mine and is buying one...he he he ;)
