View Full Version : VIDEO - App Enables Japanese Emoji for Non-Japanese (Disguised as an RSS reader)!

If you were slightly disappointed when Apple introduced iPhone 2.2, giving exclusive Emoji-love to all those Japanese iPhone users, you may be in luck.
A 99c/59p application has been discovered which when installed actually unlocks the Emoji keyboard on iPhone OS …

[Edit] - It seems you can delete the app after enabling Emoji.

[Edit] - VIDEO: http://vimeo.com/2946195

Twitter user @Zyber17 has discovered a hole in 2.2. Not just that, but an weirdly-named application currently on the store,
selling for a measly 59p actually harnesses the ability to (accidentally) unlock the Emoji keyboard within iPhone OS 2.2. Here’s what you do:

Buy the application, play with it for a few minutes, then quit it and navigate to: iPhone Settings > General > Keyboard > Japanese.
You will now see an ‘On/Off’ option for Japanese Emoji!

Basically, we advise you to pick up this app as quickly as physically possible,
if you want Emoji on your non-Japanese iPhone or iPod touch.

...and yes, the app is disguised as an RSS reader.

Reviewed at: v1.1.1

It actually DOES work. I'm working on getting a video up.

Your update is not true. My girlfriend has an iPhone and I tested this out and have emoji enables now. I sent her a text message and it shows up on her phone, even though she doesn't have emoji nor the app in question.

Edited. That's good to know. I'm just working off what people are telling me on Twitter at the minute.
While I have installed the app and enabled Emoji, I haven't got as far as testing sending an emoji-littered message yet.

If you guys have any other questions about this, here is another thread from yesterday (perhaps not in the right forum though):

I did the same and this is true. I just wonder if they show up on a non-iPhone? We'll see...

This works! and it works when texting them!

Emoji is cool! I wasn't to disappointed that we didn't get them, but that was because I didn't know how cool they were, or how many of them there were.

There are a bunch of pages of these pictures.

Definitely worth the $.99 to buy the app that unlocks them

Also I would suggest not updating this app if any future version are released. They/apple may change something in the code to stop this from happening.

What am I doing wrong? I played with the app for two minutes three times, but I still see no emji enabled when I go to Japanese Keyboard settings.

Edit: Got it finally, on the seventh try. I clicked on a article and left it open for about five minutes and then checked and it was there. Thanks for the heads up by the way, razorianfly.

Same thing happened to me. I opened every feed, and touched every link and then it worked.

Although originally thought to be the case, the app is not connected with the hack.
You can in fact delete the app compeltely, and the Emoji settings remain active.

Yup, your right. Very good catch. Hopefully now someone can find a loophole for running an IM app in the backgroud and disguise it as something like a flashlight =] :P

Yeah I think only you can see it in your iphone. I can't. Here is what it looks like to me:

So, will this only show up on iphones or other cell phones too?

As far as I understand it, that app doesn't 'unlock' Emoji, but uses Emoji in the app itself.
The above way unlocks it globally in iPhone OS 2.2.

You can use it in Tweetie, Mail, and any other app which supports normal text input. It unlocks the Japanese Emoji keyboard.
The keyboard which is in iPhone OS 2.2 as default, for everyone, but is hidden to those users outside of Japan.

Well I could be wrong (I haven't bought the app myself), but it does claim that it does in the description: "and the emoji icons can be used in other iPhone apps such as SMS, Notes, Calendar, Mail etc".

Edit: I saw this on Gizmodo, which mentions both apps: http://i.gizmodo.com/5138107/how-to-get-emoji-iphone-emoticons-for-free-without-jailbreaking

This is very cool. Everyone you send this to that has an iphone on 2.1 FW and above can see the emoji's. All my friends keep asking me how I get the icons in SMS and Email. I just say I don't know what they are talking about. LOL

I really wonder if this developer actually did this on purpose (hide it in an RSS reader) or if this was just some sort of glitch or something. I also wonder if Apple knows about this and are just letting it slide. It would would be very mean-spirited to later take these Emoji away from us. If they do, I'll be sending them hate mail (with hand drawn angry Emoji ).

2 Toy around with the app a bit.
3 Push the Home button, go into Settings
4 Click General > International > Keyboards > Japanese
5 Turn on Emoji
6 Head into a text message and click the globe symbol to the left of your spacebar.
7 Drive your iPhone friends nuts.

Got an amazing link today from Ashot about this application that will allow you to send Japanese emoji icons to anyone with an iPhone — without hacking it! You all know I won’t jailbreak my iPhone :)

Anyways, it’s really simple. This is all you need to do:

#1. Get this $0.99 app called frostyplace from the iTunes store [ link ]
#2. Play with the app for a minute to activate, click on a story, etc
#3. Go into you settings -> General > International > Keyboards > Japanese
#4. Click the Emoji option to on!
#5. Text anyone with an iPhone and they’ll get your icons!

I just did it too. Thanks for the tip but I dont think you need to stay on it for "x" amount of minutes to activate it. I think you need to find an article with a face(or what should be a face)at the end of the title. It would not work for me and then I found one with a face and the option showed up.

Did it on my iPhone 3G. Sent my wife a text with an emoji (she as an original Edge iPhone running 2.2) and the emoji icon did not show up. Just a square.
I'll try running FrostyPlace on her phone and I'll report back.

Edit: She's running 2.1; that explains it. I'll update hers to 2.2...

Your girlfriend's phone apparently doesn't support Japanese emoji. Not Apple's fault.
Guess you have to buy her an iPhone :)

The Japanese weren't terribly interested in the iPhone for three reasons. It didn't have emoji (very important to the young Japs, what's an email without some emojis?), it doesn't have one-seg TV or the EDY cash system (prepaid electronic money chip that they pass over a scanner at a lot of places). Apple took care of the emojis in the 2.2 update, but there's a rumor here that Apple will put out a seperate model of the next iPhone in Japan that includes the EDY cash system and the one seg TV.

The emojis appeared on my wife's Samsung phone, and I'd guess they'd appear on most phones here in Japan.

Just FYI - I sent a couple of "test" text messages to my Verizon phone including emoji and they were never received at all (even the one that had text as well). So you might not want to take chances unless you're sure the other person has an iPhone. Shame, but still cool to see all the icons. :)

Same here, well over 30 of my Twitter followers have DMed me to confirm that they've
bought the app just by reading my Emoji-littered tweets in Tweetie.

The source of the workaround was @iJustine.
I'm just getting the word out.

The payments via phone are a lot more popular than anyone outside Japan realizes. It is very handy.

We are just now starting to see casual mobile to mobile email here in the states as people get phones based on Android or phones like the iPhone. I hope we can adopt some other technologies from the Japanese mobile market here because it can be addicting just staying for a short time in Japan.

Don't they now make an attachment for the iPhones (or have demoed one for future release) to enable the TV viewing?

Also, as silly as it probably sounds to many of us, another reason that the iPhone wasn't as well received was that there isn't a loop to attach a strap- almost as important to many Japanese as the emoji are their keitai strap decorations...

Jan 26, 2009, 10:33 AM
I saw the one-seg TV tuner/battery attachment in a magazine.

I hardly understand the absolute need for a decorative strap and emojis either.

Got this, thanks OP

It works a treat, only one query though - I understand that now I have Emoji I can delete the app, does that leave Emoji "selectable" in the iPhone settings so I can turn it on and off or is it then locked on?

I like Emoji but might want to turn it off sometimes as it makes the aplha key a little small.
