Well I just had my iPhone stolen. So I did some research and found out that At&t and Apple are not going to do anything to help me, which is no surprise to me. So I found this e-mail sjobs@apple.com which supposedly belongs to Steve jobs and I e-mailed "him" my situation. Now, I am awaiting any kind of response which I will then post here to see if this is really Steve's e-mail or not and if it is, whether or not he helps me.

I tried my luck with that email about a week ago and I havent got a response yet. Maybe its because hes taken a leave, but I was under the impression that those emails were handled by high positioned costumer service people. I don't think they'll bother responding to you though, and if they do it will probably be something like "we're very sorry about that and thanks for using our products".

Kinda gets annoying all these people thinking that just cos you can email the CEO of a company they are oblidged to make your situation better...

Report to the police, claim on insurance .... if you don't have insurance then sorry but thats what insurance is for.

Well, AT&T could block the stolen iPhone from their network and/or triangulate its position, so that the local police knows where to look for it. You know, they do that all the time in their hunt for "terrorists". THAT'S how they could help.

Im gonna be stuck with At&t for 2 years because of this phone and they aren't even gonna help me even a little bit well I think I have every right to e-mail Steve. Even though im pretty sure it's not a real e-mail...I just did it for the heck of it, and posted it here. Not only am I stuck with At&t for 2 years but I can even get rid of the $30 data plan that comes with the iPhone. Now I have to pay $30 extra each month for 2 years, thats $720 that I am giving them for free! I think that is enough money for them to give me at least 1 replacement iphone.

Even if that were the case, the money you're giving them over the course of your contract is actually paying for your subsidized phone. So no, you're not giving them money "for free".

But it's not the case, as you can drop your data plan any time you want, even if you DON'T lose your phone.

You'll be the first person in history who has been unable to drop the data plan. My guess is you're as irate on the phone as you appear here and no rep is going to do anything for you in that state.

BTW, emailing Steve Jobs will get you no where since he's on leave of absence. Some people around here expect you to know that, I would say that not knowing that simply means you don't plant your ass around the news enough to really know and that is sad but forgivable.

You paid for the car upfront or a lease? Either way you will recover the money from the insurance. Also, you would not be stuck paying for two years worth of service that you will not use. At the very least, they should allow him to downgrade his plan to a suit crappier phone. At the best case, they should sell him another one for the original price. (They make crazy money off Data plans and would help towards improving their image of douchebag-eness)

wow, just wow.
if you live in an unsafe neighborhood maybe the damn phone isn't for you, huh? use the ones on the street, no contract with those.2

Please tell me how that isn't racist or elitism? Should someone be required to move in order to get an iPhone? Do you want Apple/ATT to check the street address to ensure you are privileged enough? How about just people with a trust fund with over $100K in it?

What could AT&T or Apple do about it?

ATT can do amazing things with a headset on their network. For example, noting the numbers called... pinging the towers/GPS... turning on the mic... Websites visited. (Unique URLs for Social Networking logins) If the owner of a headset wishes to know these things, why should ATT not help? He is paying $80+/month for their service.

In America, low-income, high-risk neighborhoods are often synonymous with Black.

When you hear there is a scholarship for low-income inner city kids, it's often meant to mean Black children. I'm not saying that this defines Black people or their culture. All I'm saying is that in America when you hear those words, that is what comes to mind.

Not if it's a 3G.

You'll be the first person in history who has been unable to drop the data plan.

If they won't give you a new phone, and they have no reason to, just cancel your service entirely.

Jan 26, 2009, 12:56 PM
OP, I'll break it down for you:
1) Apple can't help because you lost your phone; it didn't break or get dropped; you lost it.
2) AT&T can't help you because you lost you phone and they don't offer insurance for the iPhone.
3) Steve Jobs will just think your a "less-than-intelligent" consumer.

So the deal is you have a few options:
1) Get a different phone and put the SIM card in.
2) Buy a replacement iPhone 3G from Apple/AT&T for the unsubsidized price.
3) Cancel your account and pay ETF.
OR
4) If possible: Try to recover your phone—but remember Apple, AT&T, Jobs, we cannot help you with this. You will need to contact the police, attorney, etc. for this.

And yes that is Steve Jobs email.

Because all that costs them more than $80/month over the 2 years. AT&T has no obligations to provide those services because the OP lost the phone. Also pinging, tracking websites, is a violation of privacy, no matter who it is. FCC would fine the hell out of AT&T for those things.

often for you, that is. My comment had nothing to do, IMO, with race or countries or anything. I think you haven't read all of OP's posts in this thread, he really wants Apple or AT&T to give him the phone back since he pays for a contract and he got it stolen? He even e-mails "Steve Jobs", which I suppose corresponds to a team of technicians, since I believe most responses have to do with technical issues, but I could be wrong. I did receive calls back regarding that sort of issues. Anyway, I believe your "understanding" my comment makes you a bit racist or sensitive. All I'm saying is the OP has to pay for another phone and not someone else. How much does it really cost to look at the computer and view the list of received/sent text messages? They store all that data, it's just a matter of looking at it and telling the person who owns the phone and pays the service bill the data. I don't quite see where privacy is an issue. The OP owns the phone and is paying for the service. In this case, he is neither spying on his/her wife, kids or someone else. He us utilizing the equipment to aid him in the recovery of his property. Much the way onstar works.

My comment wasn't about the phone and payment for it. It was about living in high-risk areas. That shouldn't matter what type of tech you own/use.

Few Notes:

You say "wow, just wow" a lot.

You say, "it is your fault of having your phone stolen or lost, or whatever..." If someone gets mugged, is it his/her fault for having it stolen? This is where I start to take issue with your statements.

You also say, "if you live in an unsafe neighborhood maybe the damn phone isn't for you, huh? use the ones on the street, no contract with those." Now I asked this before, but I guess you didn't read my post. Should Apple/ATT check your street address to see if you live in a high-crime area? Do you wish them to approve or deny based on a home security system? How about only allowing people with trust funds with over 100K in them?

Sorry, I don't like capital letters, I find the lack of capital letters in my posts makes my words less important and more suitable to a forum, I do use them in other areas/contexts. I do not think AT&T should check where people live before handling their iPhones since it shouldn't be guaranteed they wouldn't get them stolen and AT&T shouldn't really pay for your losses. My requesting other statistics was really sarcastic, sorry if you didn't get the message, I didn't really check the first links since I still am convinced stealing and having something stolen has nothing to do with race. I'm sorry if you think differently. I'd like to point out I've been through "riskier" places in my life and I've never felt the need to show off my goods, I've actually always thought I should hide my white headphones and such, since I've been "talked to" even doing so.

Ok, you found stats. I can use stats to say that 100% of the population that was poor in my community growing up was not black. Good for you. Just because a percentage says something it does not mean that everyone, or even most, assumes this. JUST YOU. If anyone is being racist it's you by assuming that he/she was speaking about an entire race. Just a stupid comment on your part.

It's alright with the capital letters. I just wanted to point that out. I also got the sarcasm. I wanted to back up what I was saying further.

I don't think having something stolen has anything to do with race. But what you were saying about high-risk areas does. It's ok if you don't agree. I feel you should know that this is one way those remarks can be taken.

You can take precautions while going through high-risk areas, but ultimately it is an outside act by someone else that puts you in danger. That takes it out of your control. This argument is along the lines of saying a girl was raped because of how she was dressed. (lol. Sexism? I'm not saying you are sexist or anything like that.)

Can we agree that there are things beyond a person's control and that ATT could do something along the lines of "good faith," but likely won't. Also having something stolen is not a person's fault. (Unless he/she leaves it out in the open with no supervision.)

There is a huge difference between the anecdotal "statistics" you referenced and my mention of peer reviewed studies.

And should we not bother with statistics? Perhaps we should all some medicine because it makes some vocal people feel better?

I suggest you take a read at this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generalizability_theory).

Ok, then maybe I am a minority (by this i mean less than half, not a racial slur) because when I think of poor, I think of someone who has fallen on hard times (regardless of ethnic background or gender). Maybe you should stop trying to for people to think a certain way or assuming that everyone thinks like that. I know a lot of people that live in neighborhoods with crime (theft included) and it is a 100% caucasian. Living in a bad neighborhood doesn't mean anything when speaking about ethnic background.

Nice THEORY you linked...it's a theory.

I'm not saying that this defines Black people or their culture. All I'm saying is that in America when you hear those words, that is what comes to mind.

wow. i learned at school that america is the great soup of civilations.
by the way, do you make the words in your "head", "not america".

I assume you think Darwin's Theory is just a theory? I'm also not saying that Black = poor. What I am saying is that it is the view in the American Psyche - at least for a little while longer.

How can AT&T not let you drop the data plan. Tell them you dont have the phone anymore, and you got a different phone, you can cancel a texting plan at anytime.

Wow...that's perhaps the most far fetched connection between the original comment to where you are heading.

Way to hijack the thread. I think you deserve to be in timeout for a while.

And I agree this thread should be closed. There's nothing political about this, other than the utterly ignorant reference to race.

I just posted this to see if anybody would think it was funny (that I was actually trying to email steve jobs), like I did. Apparently not, I never wanted these huge arguments about absolutely nothing. Sorry that I made the post in the first place MacRumors Forums.:(

Hey, don't take it the wrong way. :o

This is what happens to every thread about the xMac, Hackintoshes, software piracy, the iPhone nano (won't happen), and almost any thread on product updates.

Don't be sorry. You should be free to post anything related to Apple here. I got angry at a comment and took it a bit too far. (Although I still stand by my points.) It has nothing to do with your post. You'll find a lot of us are really great people here. We just have arguments sometimes.

Your an idiot, Plain and simple- Just take care of your electronics and maybe keep them in your pockets?

I emailed Henry Paulson. Hopefully he will mail me a replacement with a check?;).....Sorry, I had too:D

***Correction*** Mr. Paulson forwarded my email to Tim Geithner.

I believe Tim will reply and ask who was the wallet made by. According to OPs beliefs Gucci( or whoever) should have to pay.
Even if I didn't pay for my phone and it was somehow subsidized, if I lost it, I would feel obligated to pay, since it would be like someone gave me his phone to keep for a few days and I lost it, would I ask for another one?

so let me get this straight....your phone gets stolen - and you want Apple or AT&T to do something about it and you are willing to try to send Steve Jobs a email when he is sick and on leave expecting him to say, how terrible - let me send you a brand new iphone since yours go stolen....oh yeah and I will send you a new MBP 17" all upgrades, an iMac, AppleTV and anything else that we have - just for you -

you are a selfish, self center a-hole that should be ashamed of your actions, damn someone delete this before it gets really ugly -

and you did not think you were going to get called out by anyone here? And now that you have you are back-pedaling....nice job....nice job

Geez! Relax buddy! You're talking to this guy like he just spat on your mum.

Who cares if he wrote SJ at work? You think he actually goes through those emails?

I can picture you now; coke bottle glasses sliding down your nose as you pound away at those keys, furious that somebody had the audacity to email your idol and messiah and ask for a REPLACEMENT PHONE. Ugh!! What's this world coming to? Get a life man.
