hey guys,

I know some of you have flicker on their screens and I wanted to mention my story and current solution on a aluminum 2.4 13inch macbook. Please keep in mind that this is for MY particular case of flicker. I am sure some people might have a different kind. Also, apologies in advance if this is a long story with a short conclusion. I feel that there isnt enough "story" out there for people to analyze and study when dealing with this type of problem. For those who dont want to read the story, the conclusion is................... that my particular case appears to be more software related than hardware (for now). Its flash thats causing the flicker (version 9 since im scared to update lol) and I drastically cut the flicker down to dare I say zero by clicking off the use hardware acceleration checkbox in its properties box. Could it be that hardware acceleration causes the graphics card to turn on and off or something which causes the flickering? something hardware is taking more juice than allocated during the process which is causing flickering. In any case, Ill leave it for you guys to debate.

My case of flicker occured while on battery power, with a backlight setting at anything other than full. Having the display on the "slightly dim" setting didnt matter, nor having it automatically adjust using the optical sensor (I keep it off). With the backlight all the way up, I had no flicker.

I began to notice that my flicker occured during animations on the screen. When they are running, it causes my screen to flicker. Most notably on the all white sections (most web pages for example). The screen would flicker during them, and a little bit after them. I figured out that it flickered during flash animations. Even if I scrolled all the way down to the point where I couldnt see them, it would still flicker. It got to the point where I could time the flicker since I knew the ad length.

For some reason though, it wasnt flickering too much with the safari browser instead of firefox. That reminded me that I had installed safariblock about a month ago when I was pushing my battey limits lol. With safariblock, the flickering goes down quite a bit but didnt disappear completely. With it off, it flickers just like firefox 3.1 beta 2.

This morning my breakthrough came when I started playing around with flash's properties. I right clicked on an animation and checked off the "use hardware acceleration" feature. Now I cant see flicker during animations on the screen like before. If there is still flicker I cant notice it yet which is a giant step forward. I'll check really hard tonight in a dark dark room. But I can tell you this, The same sites that I noticed flickering before dont flicker so much that I notice them right now.
