SEO principles have really become less relevant as time goes in, in fact Google throws out at least 50% of the "principles" that were considered the cornerstones. Best SEO = More Traffic, Lots of Good (and Reciprocal) Links.

That's pretty much it. Content is king. You can also go a long way with just a few good, relevant links.
