If i get the new apple headphones (the one with the microphone and remoter thing) can I use that to make VOIP calls with something like fring? Also is there anything similar to these headphones that I can buy at a place like walmart ( headphones with built in mic) ?

As I understand it, you can indeed use Fring to make Skype calls etc when using the Apple headset.
But I too would like to know whether I can buy a cheap headset from the local electronics store and use that instead.

The apple headset will work. Just because it has a mic in the headset doesn't mean it will work. I found that out. I have the sennheiser mm50's, they work great.
Yes you will need fring and if you have a skype account you can use that. I don't like Skype, I find the quality not that great. And cause I am in Canada I can't get a virtual number to receive calls. I set an account up with www.callwithus.com. I got a number and voicemail, it costs about 8 bucks a month. But it's handy for me cause I use my ipod touch mainly for my work.

Not sure. The only headsets I know that work are the apple and the sennheiser MM50's. I also order one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/MACALLY-MICROPHONE-MIC-FOR-iPOD-TOUCH-FRING-SKYPE-MSN_W0QQitemZ180319853665QQcmdZViewItemQQptZOther_MP3_Player_Accessories?hash=item180319853665&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50
I want to give it a try and see how it works.

I paid less the $10 for the Philips Headphone connector for iPhone (at Target in California). It has a micophone and I plugged my headphone into it and was able to make a Skype call through Fring on my 2G iPod Touch. Very cool.
