Help needed: Screencap not working?

I'm using an iMac G5 running Leopard. Sometimes (and right now), my screencapture won't work if I'm copying it to the clipboard.

Basically, Command+Shift+3/4 will save to the desktop, but Command+Control+Shift+3/4 will make the sound, but won't actually copy it to the clipboard so I can paste it into Photoshop (it also won't save as a .png to the desktop).

Any advice? I've tried restarting, but it seems sporadic. It was working a couple minutes ago, but now it isn't.
