The iPhone Dev Team have updated their site saying they have a new version of Pwnage Tool and quickpwn. They have added instructions for us suckers with 10.5.6 to allow DFU mode to work again. Check it out for yourselves!

EDIT: go to their "official torrents" section on the sidebar and it will show you the bittorrent links.

I am a bit out of it JB-wise; so does 10.5.6 present a problem? Do I have to get the developer account to downgrade to 10.5.5?

you would just be downgrading the IOUSB "Driver"
I also heard using a USB hub between the Mac and the iPhone works as well, though I haven't personally tried it.

I can confirm the USB hub fix. I used that when I jailbroke my iPhone to 2.2 and it worked perfectly fine.

ahh the dev-team. They never fail to release patch. It's kinda funny how they are always so quick to do it. and I haven't tried with 2.2.1 yet, but I always hook my iPhone up through a hub, and never had any problems. so that should work.:apple:

from the many posts i have read on these forums yes using a hub should bypass the 10.5.6 DFU restore problem

thanks for the assurance, I will try this when I get home. I haven't been JB'ed since 2.1.

Ah, another JB. I am getting pretty good at it, as I have JB'ed every firmware from 2.0. Gotta wait till I get home though.

Has anyone tried the un-official WinPwn (http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/01/jailbreak-firmware-2-2-1.html)? I think I'll just wait for the official one... :D

can anyone help me?
I try to make a custom 2.2.1 firmware using pwnagetool .. I install AptBackup and Bossprefs as defaults packages. I'd like to add yellowsn0w as well; but when I add the apt9.yello..... source, I can't "refresh" the list and get yellowsn0w to appear.
Am I doing something wrong?

Ok it's not only yellowsn0w source.
I also tried to add apt.hebdev.com but when I select it from the source list and hit "refresh" nothing happens :(

I had a similar problem. Try re-installing Cydia via itself. ;)

I tried installing the IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg but then got the grey rolling screen telling me to restart by holding the restart button... and wouldn't start at all. (had to connect to another mac and reinstall the 10.5.6 version to get the machine working again!) Any ideas what i did wrong?

Huh? You're trying to add a source when you're not even Jailbroken? If this is a feature of PwnageTool then do excuse me, I'm limited to Windows/Linux, so no PwnageTool for me. :(

Yeah, with Pwnage tool you can add packages to cydia on your desktop while building the custom .ispw. Purdy nifty.

Which "stuff"? Your apps, JB apps, or info? Next time be specific.
If you only mean your app store apps, then yes. Do a back up in iTunes, restore and update, Jailbreak, then restore from the backup. All of your stuff will be right where you left it.
If you meant JB apps and themes etc, then you can download aptbackup in cydia, open the app, tap backup. After doing that you can follow the normal steps. After you are rebooted and you have cydia installed, download aptbackup again, open the app and hit restore. All of your JB stuff will magically appear after a few minutes and a reboot.
This is all covered in detail already:

Ok so i just bought my first iphone just a week ago and it was 2.2 i jb without a problem...sorry if i sound dumb, but would i go about jb it the same way this time, (updating official fw thru itunes, then use pwn to jb it)? also i'm using tmobile, so i currently have yellowsn0w installed, will it work with this new fw? i just went on cydia, and there was an update for yellowsn0w that i installed, so i'm wondering if that was for the new 2.2.1 anyone know?..thanks guys...

No. You cannot re-jailbreak with the new firmware yet. if you do so, you will lose your unlock. you have to wait until the dev team says it's okay. go monitor their page. they'll figure it out, they always do. :)

Woohoo. I just updated to 2.2.1 via pwnagetool on my macbook air rev b. I downgraded the usb to 10.5.5 since my os x is version 10.5.6 and everything is working. I love devteam.
I donated the last time but anyone who finds there's useful make sure to shoot 5 or 10 dollars there way.

If you are on a mac you can use pwnage tool to create a custom firmware without the baseband update:
7. The Yellowsn0w version has been updated to 0.9.7. Yellowsn0w is available from Cydia or Installer - this version allows compatibility with pwned 2.2.1 system (not baseband). Again„ remember 0.9.7 yellowsn0w DOES NOT WORK WITH 2.2.1 (02.30.03) directly - you need to be running a ‘pwned’ version of 2.2.1 which didn’t upgrade the baseband during the restore/upgrade.

I already updated my software but now want to JB my 3G running the current pack.
1. I made a custom ipsw with pwnage tool.
2. Pwnage tool wouldn't let me go into DFU because I have a new laptop (apparently there is some issue with that). I didn't get past that step in pwnage tool.
3. I *think* I was able to get into DFU myself by the hold-both-buttons-for-ten-seconds-then-release-the-sleep/wake-button-right-before-the-apple-appears-while-holding-the-home-button-for-ten-more-seconds-method.
4. I got the USB cord image telling me to plug my phone into iTunes.
5. iTunes recognizes my phone, says it needs to be restored, and I alt/option click restore.
6. I selected my custom ipsw
7. It extracts the software and starts restoring in AND THEN GIVES ME AN ERROR MESSAGE! Everytime!!
Question 1 - Can I manually transfer my custom ipsw to an old powerbook, restore my phone on there, and avoid the error message?
Question 2 - Am I getting the error message because pwnage tool didn't finish, because I'm on the latest laptop version, and/or both?
Question 3 - Will Quickpwn work around this easier?
