Need to unlock iPhone, but don't want to Jailbreak???

Hi guys,

I just bought a new 3G iPhone from a legitimate store in New Zealand shortly before Christmas 2008, and the guy took it into the back-room and unlocked it so I can now use it with any sim card (just been to the UK, bought a Vodafone sim card, and have been using it during my holiday there for three weeks without a hitch).

The phone has not, as far as I can tell, been Jailbroken though.
So presumably the warranty is still good with Apple?

Now my daughter has purchased an iPhone in the UK while we were there, and she needs to use it here in NZ . . . . my question is, does anyone know how to unlock the phone from the O2 network in the UK, so she can use it with her old Vodafone sim card here in NZ?

It would be good to know what program the guy used when I bought my iPhone in NZ . . . . . anyone?

YOu will have to JailBreak to get the installer that installs the Unlock. The unlock is called Yellowsn0w.

You must jailbreak to unlock the phone yourself. Period.

As for your concern about warranty, unlocking is a far more serious 'offence' than jailbreaking.

If you jailbreak, it's your choice whether or not you utilise other features - if you want you can choose to do nothing other than unlock and keep using you phone in exactly the same manner.

However, you should seriousluy consider jailbreaking to take advantage of all of the other benefits as well.

In reality, why you wouldn't want to jailbreak is a mystery to me. Jailbreaking is 100% reversable. 'Bricking' is a myth. If by any chance you had to take your phone in to Apple then you could restore it, however you won't recieve support for a UK-bought iPhone in NZ anyway, so essentially you have nothing to loose.

From what you say it sounds like your own phone was legitimately unlocked, and there is no chance whatsoever of replicating that specific process. It requires special unlock codes known only to the network selling the phone.

That would depend on your carrier. T-Mobile is one option here in California, USA; and I think Centennial is another, but they require JB...:confused:

No option there. The UK-iPhone is covered in the UK on the O2 network, and no where else. So short of you moving to the UK you must take the lovely leap away from legitimacy.

Indeed, your phone should be jailbroken 100% sure. He had to get the unlock on there somehow right?? Try double click your home button twice to see if he hide cydia.
