Using DVD clips in iMovie or FCP 4

You can use DVDBackup to rip video off of your DVDs,

But I'm not sure how you would take what you ripped and then use it in iMovie.

If you figure this out I'd be interested to know.

After you extract the VOB files using DVD Backup, you will need to demux and save the VOB files as a quicktime movie, so then you can edit it in iMovie or FCP. To do this you will need a program like MissingMpegEdit.

You don't need QT pro, the app saves it as a quicktime movie. You can then import it into iMovie or FCP. However if you read the second post on the download page, it states:

the instructions clearly state that you need Apple's MPEG2 QT component for it to do anything.

So you need to download that in order to use it. If you have FCP or DVDSP you should be able to download it through software update.

There's a much easier way to do this....

Download this program called OSEx... http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9830

Then among the many options select "FMT" and hit elem. streams. this will put an mpeg2 file and a audio file on your computer when you import it. Then you can easily open the mpeg2 file in FCP. If you want the audio too, do a search for the program mAC3dec, this will convert it into mp3, or aiff or just about anything you want to use in fcp.

NOTE: you do need to have the Quicktime Mpeg2 codec.

I've found this way to be better because you can edit the mpeg2 straight in FCP without having to demux anything...

BTW, if you have problems with FCP crashing on export of the file, post it here, b/c then you have a little solvable problem with copyright stuff which is possible to get around. I can't remember if OsEx solves that problem automatically.

The simplest way is DVDxDV (http://www.dvdxdv.com/download.html) With this you can load up the VIDEO_TS folder that you ripped with DVDBACKup and select exactly what you want to convert and to what codec you want to convert it to. Using in and out points, you can extract only what you want wihthout having to process the entire movie. It has a simple and easy interface.

you guys are making this way too hard. All you have to do (assuming you have a DV camera) is connect your dv camera into your dvd player, and connect your computer into the camera, take out the tape from the camera and set your camera to dv-out. open iMovie and set it up to import. play the dvd on the dvd player and then click the import button. as soon as you're done, click the button again, and there you have it. dvd in iMovie. simple. no other applications involve, no worrying about video types, it's all right there for ya. :D

Just came upon your post while searching the forum.
Well, I tried this on my Canon DV camera just now. It works!
One thing really cool about this is : I can just import any part of the movie I like without have to find a software to cut and edit the movie files. Cool.
